Fact or Fiction? O-ring lube
I have never seen anyone ask this one..here goes.
Many moons ago, I used to Scuba dive.
We never used divers silicone on any of our o-rings. I do remember we used to use plain old Vaseline petroleum jelly on our resperator and tank orings. Back then, maybe there was no such thing as divers silicone.
I remeber the dive instructor telling us to just use vaseline.
So is vaseline petroleum jelly ok?
I just have so much of it around here..haha

You might try this according to Robert Beeman everytime you do that it also vaporizes a very small amount of the sealing cup, which over time increases the volume of the compression chamber, which leads to lower fps. it’s a downward spiral that results in the gun having to be rebuilt. Not to mention Mr. Murphy standing right there waiting for his chance. Merry Christmas everyone.
LOL , i was waiting for y’all to get on the same page, i have a friend with a gamo that shoot like 600 fps and after a nice squirt of wd 40 it will shoot 1200 fps. 😆 , i just shake my head at him, it would do no good to try and explain . 🙂
Jerry I believe you might be right when referring to the PCP airguns (although I still don’t mess with Mr. Murphy) But when it comes to break barrel springers, you had to have had one diesel on you before haven’t you?
Oh yeah, I’ve had the springers diesel but this all started with oring lube so I’ve been thinking PCPs here the whole time. It’s a good point to make though, the springer diesels because it rapidly compesses air and the flow vaporizes and ignites some oil. This can make for extra noise and a bad shot but I’ve never heard of a dieseling springer exploding!

Yup. I mentioned that you can get a little burning in the breach a few posts ago. All that happens is a tiny little puff of smoke when it happens. Nothing remotely resembling a dangerous explosion. And even that (my experience) required several passes down the bore with a patch wet with oil. I got a tiny little puff of smoke when I opened the bolt for a few shots. I was running that gun at 3600psi at the time. The tiny bit of oil that can get ignited in that situation just doesn’t have the energy to cause a serious event.
Most folks that talk about exploding airguns are thinking tank explosions. They read where a paintball guy had a gun burn up and maybe they saw a video where some guy screams that a drop of oil on the fill nipple will lead to certain death… BS. The wive’s tales all trace back to some guy using oxygen or some amorphous tale.
It really depends on what type of o-rings your using. Buna-n (70) are not very resistant to petrolium based oils and will swell or brake down over time. Viton o-rings however are impervious to most fuels, acids and oils and are fine in hot or cold conditions. They cost more but it’s a small price to pay 😉 . Viton o-rings and lithium grease is the perfect combo in pcp’s. IMHO of course.
The difference in pressure in the Condor breech and the Condor 3000 PSi tank is a ratio of 204:1. Surely the compression in the Condor breech when hit with 3000 PSI from the 490cc tank is enough to cause diesel action if there is the presence of a volital lubricant. The rush of air should be sufficient to vaporize some lubricants on contact.
I know how a diesel works and there is no parallel in airguns. Unless you can atomize some oil into the tank and at the same time fill it so fast you reach autoignition temperature…go ahead try it 10000 times, I’ll bet your just fine at the end!

I use slick 50 in my PCP guns but not in my Sp ringers, It could cause them to Diesel. I have never replaced a seal. 😀
the reason we dont use petro based is cause it eats the rings it will never produce enough heat to explode whet could happen is the oil be compressed to the point of explosion like in a diesel motor not from no damn heat being made
This topic seems to pop up once or twice a year. Use divers silicone like A.F. suggests. As for explosions, when you super compress air it gets HOT, if there’s anything flammable present it will ignite sometimes. Most break barrels do this (Called Dieseling) for the first 100 or so shots. It CAN be dangerous. Why tempt Murphy?

I’ve been using since my cold morning freeze up incident. Worked like a charm in the cold when the divers silicone gelled up.
