Fact or Fiction? O-ring lube
I have never seen anyone ask this one..here goes.
Many moons ago, I used to Scuba dive.
We never used divers silicone on any of our o-rings. I do remember we used to use plain old Vaseline petroleum jelly on our resperator and tank orings. Back then, maybe there was no such thing as divers silicone.
I remeber the dive instructor telling us to just use vaseline.
So is vaseline petroleum jelly ok?

How about a petroleum/air explosion?
This is a dangerous possibility when shooters lubricate with the wrong oils, but, once again, I have no evidence that an accident ever happened. Lubricate high-pressure air vessels with pure silicone, only – never with petroleum-based oil or grease.

Really? You’re going to quote TG on this topic? Let’s see, he calls a petroleum/air explosion a dangerous possibility when using the wrong oils but doesn’t offer any reasons and then mentions he’s got no evidence that any accident EVER happened (this in a post that mentions PCPs have been around for 400 years). Then based on nothing provides guidance. 🙄 Oh, who lubricates an air vessel?
TG is no scientist or explosives expert and I wouldn’t rely on him for knowledge about anything but airgun trivia. BTW, he was recommending pelloil for about everything before he got busted on it being flammable. Yeah, another case of making recommendations without knowing what he was recommending.
The fact is that to generate a fuel/air explosion shooting or filling an airgun is damn near impossible despite the crap you find on the internet.
I know Ive heard that petroleum based products should never be used in the bore area of a PCP.
So I wouldn’t tempt fate, however unlikely the probability of an accident.

Rubber and petro don’t mix… it will break down the rubber. When was the last time you put on a Trojan lubed by Vaseline?
I’m using divers silicone sparingly as the video suggested and everything is great. (With my AG not my ‘life partner’)
I don’t know where a Condor has an oring or other lubricated part that will see any elevated temperature high enough to cause burning much less an explosion.
In some PCP guns you can actually get oil to burn in the chamber. You end up with a tiny little puff of smoke…
My point is that suggesting the use of oil with a HPA gun might cause the gun to explode is not a consensus or even remotely likely.
Jerry : What I’m saying is the heat generated by high pressure air, will cause the oil to burn, therefore causing a problem. Didn’t say any thing about air being combustable?

HPA is no more flammable than what you are breathing now. Nobody ever blew up an airgun by lubing an oring with oil. Some dip shits have put pure oxygen in guns and burned them up but that does not mean we should start fearing HPA.
That said, a little silicone on orings you don’t want to swell and an appropriate lube for everything else.
General consensus is to not use Petroleum based grease with high pressure air guns. If it burns, the gun may explode. Combustion inside an air gun could be a catastrophe !

Hayward recommends a silicone or Teflon based lubricant for all o-rings and gaskets. Jack’s 327, by Hayward, is the best for the job. Other lubricants may cause premature failure and swelling of the o-rings and gaskets. NEVER USE PETROLEUM JELLY for a lubricant. Its’ oils will break down the rubber of the gasket or o-ring.”
