Q:

FML, what happened?

Ever since a got this whole setup I have had nothing but problems filling my tank. I have had 3 or 4 hoses bubble up near the connector. On the first fill or two I had the 4.5k burst disk rupture on my JDS Airman regulator. The tank has since been filled about 5 times with a cheap Ninja paintball coiled fill hose which kinks after about 3.5k.

I started doing some upgrades on the gun recently and just received Randy’s Extreme Valve and got it mounted on my ETaC-Reg. Before work yesterday I filled the tank to 4500 psi. I left the tank filled and sitting on my bed before I walked out the door. At some point in time last night shit got wild. Apparently something on the tank started to leak at a pretty fast rate causing all sorts of ruckus in my room. The tank was flying all over the place, smacking stuff left and right before finally landing under the bed. Thankfully the tank is covered in a wrap so it wasn’t damaged. Unfortunately I can’t say the same thing for my new valve 😥

What the fuck is going on here? Neither one of the burst disk have burst, and all of the o-rings appear to be in decent shape.

Sounds like you need a new gauge. Don’t buy anything from anyone else. Go here. http://www.airtanksforsale.com/ Give Joe a call. He can hook you up. Safely. Good luck.

That is true. Those 1″ gauges are not the greatest and hit or miss if they are even close. I use for reference only. I have 2 that are 400 lbs off. One is 400 under and one is 400 over.

You originally readjusted the ShoeBox compressor because the gauge on your 4500 PSI tank read low when the factory set ShoeBox shut off. Since then you blew or bubbled 3 different hoses. My logic tells me that the gauge on your 4500PSI tank may be defective or maybe has been buggered up by something from that first defective hose.

Good luck figuring out such a complex issue.

You said you filled the tank to 4500PSI ? are talking about the Air Force tank ? Thats only rated for 3K fills !!!

No, this is on a 4500 psi tank.

You said you filled the tank to 4500PSI ? are talking about the Air Force tank ? Thats only rated for 3K fills !!!

I fill my 3000 psi tanks with regs off my compressor. When I fill up my SCBA tanks I top off all my gun tanks also and have never have had a problem.

My compressor is a 2.4 cfm from Jim Sheldon.

The Shoebox turns itself off in a very particular manner that is directly related to the intake pressure. The lower the intake pressure, the higher the fill pressure. The higher the intake pressure, lower fill pressure. Even with a electric shutoff I have a feeling that these issues may still occur due to the fact that it is not consistently producing a 4500 psi flow of air.

The Shoebox may come from the set at 4500 PSI but may fill higher than that, or if you have tried to adjust it it may go a lot higher than 4500.

The shut off devices on them are not going to be right on the money each time they shut off.

I have had mine get slightly over 5000 PSI before.

What John @ JDS is thinking is that the Shoebox is compressing the air to higher than the 4500 psi cutoff. Even if this is temporarily reaching 5k psi, it would be enough to blow the burst disk out. All of the blown disks are 5k, I don’t think anyone uses or makes a 4.5k disk.

I most certainly know how to read a gauge and have made sure that the gauge has never gone over 4500 psi. When my Shoebox first arrived it would only fill to about 4300, I adjusted the collar to shut it down closer to 4500. I also make sure that my shop compressor stays between 85 and 90 psi.

I really don’t mean to be insulting but are you sure you’re reading your gage correctly? You’ve blown a 4.5K disk and a 5K disk and it appears that you’re running a shoebox that ought to be set-up to make no more than 4.5K.

The multiple hoses from multiple makers have failed as well as the tank set-up.

I really don’t know but this info gives me the gut feel of a basic error (like when I confused the bar markings with psi markings the first time I filled my Sumatra).

Is there ANY chance that you’re running pressure above 4.5K?

Oh, I had a hose bubble once but it got replaced by the vendor so it was no big deal. Multiple failures would indicate horrific luck or another problem. I don’t see how a regulator could create pressure in a mostly static system.

that is the best way to use the shoe… fill big tank, then fill your small tank.

what psi were you filling the guns tank to?

I just got off the phone with John from JDS Airman and he is saying the problem is most likely with the Shoebox compressor and the way it fills the tanks as it is not a steady flow of 4500 psi.

He said the way he would do is to fill a larger tank with a regulated output and use that to fill the smaller tank with his regulator.

Is anyone else using a Shoebox to fill a tank with a JDS Airman regulator?

Does anyone have any recommendations to solve the problems that I am having?

Thanks,
Taylor

I definitely want the size of the o-rings when you get a chance.

I have no clue as to what I’m really looking for yet, I wanted to play around with everything and work on getting some consistent shot strings. Right now I want a fucking regulator that isn’t going to blow my shit up every time I fill my tank.

Once I get my valve back from Randy and some new o-rings for the other reg I will start messing with it all again.

I’m still waiting on a return call from JDS to figure out what the fuck happened with this other regulator.

The shim stacks will not be the same from same psi regs. Shims are not that consistant so stacks will be different.

I have spent a lot of time messing with reg setups.

What are you looking to shoot with a reg?

Tag’s reg will need the o rings replaced to stop it from leaking. That is the first thing I do when I get one.
I replace with 90d ureathane o rings and if you want the numbers let me know. I think they are 008 and 013 but I’m at work and would have to check tomorrow.
