Fuxineering My Vulcan 0.22 from Talon Tunes

Thanks to the old timers here, I am starting to get my recently arrived Vulcan 0.22 from Tony readied for use.
My apologies if I don’t credit people correctly. Still trying to learn who is who.

Mine is a 2015 June production with an odd configuration of features. It has the multi part baffle shroud like the new guns, but lacked a depinger on its hammer spring, had the old style two hole HST adjuster like the older production, but like the current guns came with no hard case.

First order of business was getting its safety to actually engage. It would only partially engage and if one pulled the trigger a little harder, the blade would slip past safety and fire the gun. Turns out the trigger blade didn’t leave enough clearance for the safety plate to slide between it and the frame. The safety was just barely engaging the trigger blade and would refuse to slide further back. It was working more like a sear than a safety. Adjusting the linkage rod tension got a bit more clearance and after running the safety back and forth it now actually engages. Currently, the safety is stiff, but I put a tiny dab of moly grease and it is gradually working looser. I guess I could grind the safety plate thinner, but that means taking apart more stuff that I want to do.

Next, I turned to Hoot’s shroud vent mod. On my particular shroud, the front cap was easy to unscrew with a lens wrench.
The rear cap wouldn’t budge, so I did all the work only from the front and didn’t try removing the back flow baffle (rearmost element)

Here we see all five baffles, their intervening O-rings and the front cap

While I had things apart, I grabbed a few measurements. The baffle opening is 0.243.
The front cap opening measured 0.258
Given that a 0.30 wouldn’t fit, I’m guess the baffles and cap different for the bigger caliber version.
Then again, we see SniperQTY happily swapping barrels of different calibers on U-Tube.
Don’t know if he also swaps the shrouds.

Shroud outer diameter = 1.130
Shroud inner diameter = 1.116

I used Donny’s tape method to protect the shroud and allow easy marking of the desired hold locations.

An auto punch makes easy, accurately divots in the aluminum tubing. If you are still using an old style center punch,
do yourself a favor and get an auto punch. I kick myself for not getting one years ago.
Mine is a Lisle 30280 Automatic Center Punch. Works great.

A few minutes at the drill press and 1.0 mm holes were done.

UPDATE/ my shroud’s rear holes are now 1.0 mm and forward baffle holes 1.5 mm /UPDATE

TIP: since this is only aluminum, use 90% isopropyl alcohol to lubricate and cool the bit instead of cutting oil.
Cleanup is a LOT easier without oily residue.
(That would be the high concentration stuff, not regular rubbing alcohol)

Deburring the inside of the drill holes was done with a piece of all thread.
I taped most of the rod to limit what portions were sharp. A few passes and
all the burrs were gone. The baffles slipped easily back into place.

Finally, the vented shroud ready to install. I used an O-ring like Hoot said to secure the shroud in the desired spin.
You can’t even see the vent hols with the shroud spun to position
the holes between the shroud and barrel.

Muzzle report was now much quieter than the hammer slap and ping. Hmmmmm. was it possible that my new Vulcan didn’t have a factory de-pinger?
The lack of a hard case suggested it was a later gun, but the old style HST adjuster made me suspicious.
Opened up the access panel and sure enough —— no de-pinger at all.

Since I had to take it all apart, I went ahead and polished the hammer. Took just a few minutes with a dremel, felt wheel, and all metal polish.

Tried ONE grommet in the position that the factory places their de-pinger.

BTW, nobody quite explains how to get the whole assembly back into position.
You can’t push the spring and grommets through the adjuster hole.
Compressing the spring and hammer all together and squeezing
everything in from the side threatens to bend the hammer spring.

Here is how I did it without stressing the spring or scratching up the hammer.

1. Detach the cocking spring
2. Put the hammer, brass guide, and grommets together WITHOUT the hammer spring.
3. Insert the hammer assembly
4. Push the hammer spring in from the back. When you have enough pressure, the
grommets pop onto the spring. Then you simply spin and ease the grommets into position.
5. Reattach cocking spring
6. Insert HST adjusting plug.

Still pinged too loudly for me with one grommet, so back apart it went and I put on a second grommet.

Two grommets made the ping a bit softer. The hammer slap is now the loudest noise. Overall, the noise level has gone from loud as my Benjamin NP2 to about half as loud.
Mind, you, it is far from silent, but it is a significant improvement from how the gun arrived and worth the effort.
A delrin spring guide may be in my future.

EDIT: I have since gone to one grommet and a rubber cap over the brass bushing. See later in this thread.

So do you have one connected to a PC? Wondering if it registers each shot as taken on the PC or if you have to download the entire string once complete? Can’t find any instructions on the use of the software. Also would like to know if you can control it with the PC so you didn’t have to use the buttons on the unit.

That made me think way back when we had desktop mechanical calculators. When they went to thin plastic cases they had to glue something like brown felt inside.

We can’t make the hammer slap completely go away, but we can work on dampening the metallic ping.

Home Depot caulking cord (basically a sticky putty) allows experimentation with damping metal vibrations. It’s easy to apply, stays soft for years, and stays put. Just don’t heat it up nor put it on surfaces you want to keep pretty. The problem with pretty surfaces is that the material takes a lot of work to completely wipe back off.

I think it helps my Vulcan be a bit more quiet. Even if doesn’t work for you, it’s invisible from normal angles and easy to undo.

I have applied the caulking cord to some hidden areas of the my Vulcan that could be resonant.
For instance, the top cover over the barrel normally has a metallic ring when you tap it.
Mine now produces a dull thud when tapped.

More importantly, applied some below the breach block to damp its sound. It doesn’t take a lot of the stuff to do the job.
A piece of sheet metal bent into a u-channel protects the trigger linkage from the putty.

I can imagine Sir Ville’s reaction when he sees this one. :whistle:

At any rate, I definitely have to make sure I am well away from my pellet trap when checking gun loudness.
Pellet impact on paper, cardboard, and rubber mulch makes the gun seem 2 – 3 times louder.
So, I now have to be well away from the trap to do sound testing.

I have now increased the size of the baffle vent holes in my shroud to 1.5 mm.
I left the rear shroud holes at 1 mm.

Also, took time to align the baffle holes with the vent holes during reassembly.
That maximizes decompression, but might imbalance the forces.
Will have to test if 90 degrees vs aligned with holes affects POI.

I based my decision on the amount of lead dust deposited around each set of holes.
Plenty was around the rear shroud 1 mm holes, but practically nothing at the
forward baffle holes. I reasoned, those could stand a bit more flow
without increasing flow noise since the rear ones weren’t objectionably audible.

Report is further quieted. What remains of the HST twang and hammer slap is definitely loudest noise.
It almost sounds like firing a toy rather than a gun because it isn’t a report but that funny Vulcan “plueng”

If connected to a PC, will the data be on the PC after every shot automatically? Or do you have to shoot your string and then download the data to the PC?

The CZ Air Chrony mk2 IS the one I accidentally shot.
Thankfully just the rear metal lip was damaged. Nothing critical. Just had angled the barrel down inadvertently while the barrel was also low in the opening.
Now, I just put the gun in a vise for the shot string.

Works great and NO error readings at all for any of my shots.

I did the rubber grommet mod yesterday on the hammer spring , really was very easy . I used two 3/8 9.5mm rubber grommets both at each end
of the hammer spring and since some were saying that by using two grommets that at one end the grommet was rubbing against the compression
spring I decided to be smarter than the use of two full size grommets . I cut one grommet in half and put one split grommet on each side of the
compression spring and placed the second full size rubber grommet to the very end of the hammer spring going towards the muzzle . Guess what ?
No more pinging . Sometimes you need to sit back and totally look at the big picture and not copy exactly the info given . Now I have a rubber
grommet at both ends of the hammer spring and one in the center of the spring with no pressure of rubbing against the compression spring and no
need to modify the compression spring from being rubbed against . I guess with all of the smart people who really know how to fix problems with
air guns and missed this simple fix of splitting one of the grommets to be used on each side of the compression spring I really don’t fell that I’m
all that stupid about air guns anymore .

Sorry, I just grabbed an M3 from my odd sized machine screws bin. I simply looked for one about 6 – 7 mm longer.
The spacer was cut from an odd sized grommet. It just has to be thick enough to hold the spring out.
It’s not critical. Just make your grommet a bit taller than needed. The screw will squish it down
to the desired height.

Evgeny was kind enough to show how it is now being done at the factory.

BTW, I am now really happy with the noise level during firing and cocking. The rubber cap covering my brass bushing
is cushioning the impact nicely. Wife can just tell I am shooting upstairs – huge improvement from stock.

Can you tell me what size M3 bolt and spacer you used here . . . and where you got it from? Need to do this for my Vulcan too since the rear grommet keeps budging up against the cocking spring. Thx

It was annoying to run dry unexpectedly, so I painted my magazines to indicate when
I’m on last round and empty. This also keeps me from pushing cocking rod forward forcefully when
the magazine is empty.

If you paint the spokes I did in this image, a glance BEFORE cocking lets you know when you are on the last round or empty.

The noise of cocking the gun is made worse by the bolt handle hitting the back and front ends of its guide slot.
Three layers of electrical tape reduces the noise nicely and is readily removed or replaced.
Four layers was too much. You’ll have to find your right amount depending on tape thickness.

If I cock by wrapping my thumb around the back of the scope rail to help my fingers, this completely
eliminates the metallic clank. Now there is just the click of the trigger mechanism engaging the hammer.

The tape also came in handy for reducing the amount the action wiggles in the stock.
Two layers at strategic points made the fit just snug without stressing the wood.
It’s not glass bedding, but at least its not wobbling in the stock any more.

Finally, my wife asked me to hunt a turkey.
So, I did. 😀

Unfortunately, also shot my new Air Chrony while trying to get a shot string. Stupid – angled too far down. 😥
That will be tomorrow’s repair project.
