Q:

Great Day for shooting

What’s up Brothers, (I would say ladies and gents but i’ve yet to heard of any women active on the forum)

This morning was great weather wise for shooting, got out to the range at about 7 a.m. (off day from work) and put about 350 pellets down range today at 50 and 75 yard mostly, popped a few clay pigeons at 100 yards but no picture or videos of that. Now i know up till know everything sounds great, and i wish i could say it was, the first 50 pellets where, then followed by 300 rounds of what the FUCK. I just got in 8 tins of JSB kings 25 grain, 25 cal from Pyramid Air, and they are definitely not the same as what i’ve been shooting for the last 3 months some shoot as expected great, and others will hit 1-1.5 mil dots high, left, right, low where ever they wanted. I adjust my 50 yard zero several times trying to figure out what was going on, pulled the shroud off and shot 30 like that and it was just hit or miss. No don’t want to sound like a drama queen the misses where like 2 out of 9, but way to high to be the random flyer. The long and the short of things is at 50 yards my gun shot half an inch groups 9 of them 5 shots per group. The POI also shift from left to right from full to off regulator about 1 to 1.5 mils (36 shots). That is a gun issue for sure. So i will check all my screw and clean it up some time today. Almost want to clean the barrel and just go on back out, but my wife would kill me because we have a lunch date. So once i get back i will post Video on youtube of 75 yard pellets in flight and me shooting a one inch dualing tree that i picked up awhile ago. Pictures and video to come soon.

All the photos above are the thick skirts, because i had very little thin skirts left, think my gun may prefer the thick ones. Any case its good i just love shooting cause today was a waste of time other wise. Oh i got 8 tins of JSB 25 grain pellets from Pyramid Air about a week ago and all but one tin had thick skirts in them and i just finished up the thin ones today.

Ok guys just came back from the range and had a shitty day, didn’t bring all the right gear, didn’t paint the target high enough to show the pellets entire flight path so couldn’t really tell if there was any spiraling. Couldn’t shoot at 75 yards only 100. The wind was 4-6 knots left to right so I held about 1-2 mil-dots for all the shots. The POI changed for the thin skirts vs the thick skirts I shot with shroud on and off and the only noticeable difference was the Point of impact as well.

Kings: (bottom two shots don’t count trying to figure out hold over).

AirArms:(bottom right shot was holdover).

MKI’s:

MKII’s:

Cricket 18.1 JSB’s: surprised me.

So if you take out the wind most groups would be an inch to an inch and half. As it stands most groups averaged 2 inches.

Good thread… Is the difference in skirt thickness very apparent? Can someone post a photo?

Thin Skirt

Thick Skirt

Both measured on average the same.

Correct me if I’m wrong but in the EU you get to choose your pellet, thick or thin and even head size.

The same situation in my .22. Thin skirts are preferred. I think it is easy to explain. If the barrel is not too tight, which is desirable in order to reduce lead accumulation and accuracy degradation over time, the thin skirts seal better in such a barrel because these are easier to be compressed against the riflings due to high pressure.

50m indoor, JSB King .25, red was thin, green was two different tins of thick.
Red average 15mm
Green average 22 and 21mm

It’s obvious when you look at them. What I posted cost me hours of pain and suffering with the .25 . This seems like a shameless plug but I am working on a solution. I will post when ready.

Just opened up a brand new tin of Kings for tomorrow, and check about 50 pellets and they are are thick, so think i’m good there. Going to the range in the morning and going to test Kings (thick and thin skirts), the MKI, MKII, AA, and my cricket 18.1 job’s at 75 and 100 yards on scope cam (pellet flight test) with the shroud OFF. If i get spiraling on all pellets it should be a gun issues, if its only on the kings (and maybe the AA) I will adjust the hammer spring, i tested it today and as it stands the kings are shooting at 890 FPS today. Video to come.

I seemed to have better luck with the thick skirt JSB. Both the CZ and the LW like the thick skirt ones better at long range.

Brian,

I just opened up a tin of thick skirt 25g kings and noticed that my accuracy was suffering a bit. So I set up a target at 75 yards and proceeded with a quick test off bipod and Sandbag. First Magazine was thick skirts, and I roughly got 1.75″ group! :suprisedn: . Next Magazine was thin skirts, for a .5″ group. :8: 3ed magazine was thick skirts for a 1.5″ group. The 4 magazine was thin skirts for a .5″ group maybe better! Last was another thick skirt magazine for 1.6″ group! I’ll need to do more testing but it looks as though my Edgun r3M standard does not like these thick skirt kings. I’m pretty bummed out because I opened up 2 more sleeves and they were all thick skirts as well. I had these marked as 2014 and purchased from PA. The same order had sleeves of thin skirts as well?

Keyser: He i checked out my pellets today and found you where correct, out of the 40 or so pellets i have left in my .25 cal jar 13 of them where thin skirts and 27 of them where thick skirts. So i will sort some out before i head out this weekend. Any advice on shooting thick or thin skirts?

Steele: thanks for your input but my .22 shoots 18 grain JSB at distance with no problem.

NH Casio ex100 camera and eagle eye mount.

I used to tune my pcp using slow motion video analysis with my Casio EX ZR100. But I broke that camera. Chrono readings, for all we know, we may have the best shot strings, the smallest SD, but the camera shows what happens to the pellet flight from muzzle to target.

I am saving for a Vulcan. No camera for me at this point in time.
