Help Me Please!!!

I’ve owned my bird for over a year, and actually got a second one for my 10 year old son. We love shooting them, and Ive done a few functional upgrades to mine, but not messed with the internal parts yet (soon).

I always fill to 3000psi, or whatever my scuba tank has left in it. I notice people are always stating their tank fill pressure ie. 2800, 2900psi.

Why wouldn’t you fill every time to the mx capacity of your tank? Does it make a difference, doesnt the tophat spring and air pressure in the tank essentially regulate the same ammount of air with each hammer strike?

Please explain. I’m not looking for the scientific reason, just a general laymans reply.

Here is a good example of the hammer not having enough punch to open that valve, at least at the power wheel 3 setting. As you can see, the velocity starts off real low, and then works its way up as the pressure in the tank pressure gets lower. You get the idea.

At 2000psi, I have no power curve, all the numbers are going down from high to low. The hammer hit too hard for the tank psi

At 2300, I’m catching a piece of the curve, starting at around 860, going up a little bit, then comming back down. The hammer is almost perfect for 2300psi, 2250-2275 would give a better curve

So a light 2300 fill was what I settled on, for shooting around upper 800fps, but this whas a long time ago, now shooting a .25 at 900.

FYI all the above was at 10 Yards, so add about 30 fps for a true at the barrel reading.

If you have a chrony to get the velocity you don;t really need a on the gun pressure gauge.

I would fill to 3000 then shoot about 20 shots and then put the tank back on the pump to find out what my ending pressure was. Once I knew that I would find the difference and divide it by the number of shots. Then you can look at the velocities and subtract the per shot psi to find the max velocity for the tank pressure. 😉

Ok, im just using the AirForce adapter to fill as my pressure guage, and have nothing on my tank to indicate current gun pressure. Maybe when Tony perfects his new system, I’ll get one of them and a one piece hammer to start tweaking this thing.

I am reluctent to mess with it, as it is a true shooter with every heavy pellet I feed it (like Hoot says “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”). Anything supersonic sucks, but pushing EJ 32’s @ around 940 It’s a tac driver and my kids is as well (actually, his is better than mine!)

The higher the fill the harder it can be to knock open the valve. So you can have some low velocity for the first few shots until the pressure drops enough in the tank for the hammer to open it all the way.

That being said. On my Talon SS I could fill to 3k just fine, with no low shots to start with.

If you haven’t had any issues from reduced velocity or tank dumps then there is no reason to short fill…

Also if you shoot a string from 3000-2000 you’ll notice a bell curve in the velocities with 2800 being the max velocity. This is because the pressure in the tank is holding back the valve seat at 3000 and when the pressures reach their happiest medium you’ll get the max velocity.

The other thing is one person’s 2800 may be another person’s 3000 due to differences in gauge accuracy…
