Q:

Hot-Rodding the P-Rod

The weather in Texas this week reminds me of when I was stationed in Brunswick Maine . Thought we were supposed to be in global warming . Anyway after feeding the livestock yesterday I spent the rest of the day treating my frostbite and working on my new P-Rod . I’ts a pretty simple and straight forward teardown , anyone with any experience at fieldstripping and cleaning weapons should have no problems . I was hopeing to get a little extra velocity and I figured the hammer spring would be a good place to start . I fabricated a small spacer to fit behind the spring which creates more spring compression . There is a small bushing with rubber washers on each end which transfers air to the barrel chamber from the valve an the air tube . I enlarged this with a 7/64 drill bit and polished the inside with 400g emory paper . There are probably other mods that can be made but this looked good for now . After reassembly I fired one 14 shot string ( two mags ) Its was just too damn cold to shoot much more . Results as followes . 3000 psi start 2100 end. 18g JSBs , 705, 706, 706, 710, 712, 715, 718, 718, 715, 714, 711, 708, 706, 705, 702, 698. This is nearly a 100 fps increase at a cost of a shot count loss from 24 ( 3 mags ) to 16 ( 2 mags ) . I think this pretty damn good for a pistol, better than many springer rifles . About 20 fpe I think . I expect someone like Tony at TalonTunes could do a lot more with this pistol . This is going to be a fun gun .

Pray for some global warming !

STill good to have the info, positive or not!!! I had my mind set to buy a P-Rod, but NO one had any in stock..Best deal I found was that Pyramyd Air site said the would have them by the end of next week,,when they have said that in the past, I’ve seen the date get get changed and changed, etc..SO, I ordered the TalonSS…I am NOT a patient man..and ya know what??? I’m not sorry about my decision in the least 😎 😎 ..I’ll have P-Rod someday.

A quick update on testing the P-Rod with stronger hammer springs . No luck . All I managed to do was make it louder and waste a lot of air . The best velocity I achieved was 735 fps with 18g JSBs with the first shot and by the 5th shot was already below 700 . Just blowing air down the barrel . The best results I’ve had was what I tryed first , use the stock spring with a 1/4 ” spacer behind it . More than 1/4 ” and the hammer won’t come back far enough to cock properly . The spacer is basicly just a thick washer OD a little larger than the spring with a 3/16 hole In the middle . Any kind of hard plastic works well . Inlarge the transfer port a little bit and you should have a 20fpe pistol with about 14 shots between fills . I’m sure higher energy can be achieved but I’ts going to take someone with greater skills than I . I see that Tony at TalonTunes is selling M-Rods now so maybe in the future he will have hopped up P-Rods .
Wish everyone good shooting – have fun !

I found out yesterday from SSS..the PRod air tube is 0.875″ and from the “yellow” forum found out the MRod air tube is 1.375″ shoots the hell out of my idea..shucks 😥

The air tubes are not the same on the p-rod & m-rod.
Shoot Shovel & ShutUp, keep us posted on your progress of your p-rod.

Now that you have some springs to try, you should have some more good info for us! 😯

Thanks for the P-Rod measurement…I’m half-way there 😆 😆
My sister lives in Keller Texas and they got 480 acres a little further south..anyhow, they’re still having SNOW and SLEET where they live,,,temps down in the friggin’ 20’s damn global warmin’ !!!I lived in Fort WOrth from birth until I went to VietNam at age 23..I saw snow ONE time in all those years in Fort Worth..It’s crazy ❗ ❗
Thanks for tip about the stock….I was thinking about the Crosman one that comes standard on the 2250 XE..I think that would look good…but first I gotta find out about the airtube thing, sure would be cool if it would screw right on !!

packrat

Just got back in from putting out cattle feed and freezing my ass off . Looks like we’re iced in again today . I picked up a hand full of different sized springs at the hardware store the other day and may spend the afternoon seeing what else I can get out of the P-Rod. I just don’t know if the air tube is the same size as the M-Rods . I’ts 7/8 “” in diameter . I’m sure some M-Rod owners can chime in and let you know .

Take a look at the folding stock on the HW 100 in the EdGun section . That baby can definetly make you drool but in reality I’d be afraid to actually use it . Can’t see something like that bouncing around the floorboard af a pickup truck or atv going down ranch roads . If some of our talented machinest here on the TAG could come up with a folding stock for the P-Rod it would make a great little gun that mere mortals could afford to use .

SSS-sounds like you’re on the road to a HOT P-Rod……I seriously thinking about jumping on that wagon , myself..Do you happen to know if the AIR TUBE on a PRod is same ID/Od as the one on a MRod???? If they are, then that means the Greg Davis extension air tube for the Wrod would screw right on there!! Swifty/220swifty has already got a batch of extended shrouds for sale for the PRod !!! Together the gun would still look gooood AND would have a bit more air!!!! SO–do you happen to know about the air tubes sizes?? I’d put a permanent stock on one and have a helluva nice CARBINE 😀 😀 😀 😀

ya i was thinking aperture would do nice on that thing!

quote benneeb0y:

how good are your eyes? could go open sites.

Good point. I shoot an IZH46M with rear merit aperture and hooded front post. I can nail a 1/2″ at 20 yards free standing. Much better than notch and post.

how good are your eyes? could go open sites.

All the settings on the gun are at max , long hammer throw ( 0 turns ) max spring pressure ( 7 turns ) . The pistol came from the factory set just a little less than max , 1 turn on hammer throw , 6 turns onthe hammer spring adjuster . If a person decides he want less vel. and a higher shot count it is easy to adjust for a shorter hammer throw and a reduced spring pressure . Increasing the hammer spring pressure doesn’t seem to affect the trigger .
I havn’t even installed the carbine stock as I am interested in using the gun a primarly as a pistol and dont want the added length of the stock . However a folding wire stock that could be folded forward out of the way and still allow the gun to be used as a pistol might be interesting . The biggest problem with a combination gun like that is the sighting options . Carbine needs a short eye relief , pistol long eye relief . Would pretty much restrict you to some kind of a red dot system .

that thing would look good with a folding stock.

Ok Shoot Shovel & ShutUp,

one more question did you change the settings at all?

Thanks for the good info. 😀

Did your trigger pull weight change due to the new spring compression?

Yes , opening up the transfer port probably allows for a better transfer of air, but I suspect most of the velocity increase was due to the increased compression of the hammer spring . A stronger spring would probably give even more velocity but at the cost of a decreased shot count . I didn’t notice much noise increase , but their was probably some . As my closest neighber is over a mile away I’m not too sensitive to the noise levels , I just don’t want it sounding like a 22 pistol .
