Q:

How Accurate Is A Talon SS?

Hi,

I want to buy a pcp for field target competition, and my choices are narrowed down to an AA S400 or a Talon SS. I was recently told by a dealer that the Talon would be deadly at 10 yards, but would not do very well out to 55 yards. javascript:emoticon(‘’)
Crying or Very sad The guy at Talon Tunes told me there was no way it would compete with high-end FT guns. Anyway, I’d just like to know from you guys who own one what it will do. In FT comp. it needs to shoot around 1/4″ groups c-t-c at 55 yards. Think it can do it (assuming the shooter can)? Air Force will only state 1″ or better at 50 yards. If not, what about the Condor? Do any of you have both the AA and the Talon SS? Anyone in this area have one I could try? Any photos of targets would help, and any suggestions for other inexpensive guns that would fill this requirement would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scrench

I shoot in my yard in the prone position off my bipod– FT in my yard 🙂 … 25 yrds ….think a slightly more polished mechanics of the gun are needed for FT competitively- but if your looking to out shoot friends with spingers or even other pcps-select caliber and barrel lengths choose power plants (air co2) standard tank high flow tank- not to mention aftermarket add ons— than please believe the Airforce line is more than accurate enough… ive shot strings and strings of- 15 shots and greater thru holes the size of quaters at 45 yards. in .177 and .20cal.

How competitive do you want to be? If you like the looks of the Talon, and plan to do a little FT now and then…. get the Talon.

If you are truly serious about FT, you’re going to be better off with something other than the Talon OR the S4xx. I guess it depends on how serious you want to be with it.

For a general purpose gun that you dont need to fiddle with, the S4xx can handle hunting to FT and everything in between.

If you prefer the tactical look and enjoy tinkering, go with the Talon…. just know that if you get serious about FT, you will be at a disadvantage.

I say if ya don’t try, you will never know 😛

Grab it and Growl 😈

Talon or TSS is a bad choice for FT due to gun ergonomics. Any traditional monte carlo stocked single shot PCP or spring gun in the 20-25 fpe range in .177 is a better choice even though the talon is one hole / ragged hole group accurate at 10-25 yards with all conditions being right….The talon might be a choice for impromptu hunter FT engagements, but not real FT.

20k in a year.. 😯 do you average 55 shots per day or 384.6153841538464 shots per weekend????

Never really did the math. I looked at my spreadsheet I keep for records, I have used 15,300 not counting the stuff before I started using the spreadsheet that started in March 2008. Less than 1 tin was shot through both my FWB and my Sheridan. They just sit gathering dust now.

I shot most of this into my shed @ 10yards, practicing offhand shooting. A good lot of these pellets were Beeman Silver Bear. They shoot quite well in my .25 barrel out to around 30 yards. At 10yards, the go into the same hole as Kodiaks.

I might not shoot the Condor as much this year. Depends on how well the other 2 new rifles work out.

I don’t use mine for FT, but for hunting, I must say that this is an exceptional gun to start out with. Number one, it’s quieter and still accurate. As mentioned, you can change the caliber and the barrel like no other gun can.

I think I’ve mentioned this too, but if I have not…for the month that I have had it I’ve shot and killed more than 20 squirrels in my own backyard. And might I add that this gun is very accurate. It is a lot more accurate than my springers because there is no recoil and with HPA, the shots are very consistent and I am very stunned by what I see firsthand with the Talon SS.

At first, I was thinking, ah, this gun is like many other guns, with recoil and you pull your hair out trying to get this thing to shoot correctly and accurately, but this gun has proven me wrong. Maybe, I’m exaggerating, but I am a first time PCP owner and I chose the Talon SS and I’ve just been looking at PCP differently now.

I thought I might get a bunch of replies from people exaggerating how great the gun is, but it seems that you guys are giving me your honest opinions, and I greatly appreciate that.

Thats the way we roll here. Everybody here has shot a fantastic group or two, maybe more with their AF guns. But these are hunting rifles, and at that game they are hard to beat.

Ive had a Condor a little over a year now, and have shot nearly 20,000 rounds thru it. Best group @ 50 yards was .375″ for 5 shots. This gun averages around .8″ at that range, most of the time shooting the larger group, all off a benchrest.

Shooting in the feild, I doubt I could ever shoot that well but the game I shoot at would never believe it.

Airforce guns are relatively cheap compared to many others, and they can be modded and setup so no 2 guns look alike. Possibly you could set one up to competitively shoot FT, maybe not. I know I would never take mine into that game.

If you are serious about FT, get a dedicated FT gun and shoot it, A LOT! Spend your money there first.

This guns are great for plinking and hunting and that is all, IMO

For Ft or HFT you would be better off with the Air Arms.

provided with good pellets the little SS is very capable of sub 1″ groups at 50 yds if the shooter does their part. Easily accurate enough for small game up to that range. To be competitive in FT though, requires a step up in precision.

Scrench,

For indoor shooting you would want a micrometer tank for the SS. That would give you the low velocity for indoor extermination.

35-40yrds. dude

I thought I might get a bunch of replies from people exaggerating how great the gun is, but it seems that you guys are giving me your honest opinions, and I greatly appreciate that. I may still consider getting an SS for shooting sparrows in grocery stores at lower power, that or a Beeman R7, but for Field Target I’ve decided to try a Daystate CRX which is supposed to be pretty good. I don’t know but I’m going to find out.

And although the general consensus is that the SS wouldn’t make a great FT gun, it should still be OK for taking out a bunch of birds at say 20′-60′ feet shouldn’t it?

Thanks,
Scrench

Airforce rifles are light weight field guns, they are not really suited to competition shoots. I like mine fine for the shooting I do, but that doesn’t include FT.

Ergonomics….the talon stock is just about the opposite of what a FT stock (at least on a dedicated FT rifle) looks/feels like. Could change that with a bit of creative wood working. Can get the trigger into line, the accuracy seems good enough to at least give a respectable showing.

To tell the truth, I doubt many rifles could give you that 1/4″ at 50yards on any kind of consistent basis….a few freak groups, yes….but a long term average of many groups?
