Q:

How to quiet "hammer slap" in the .25 Cricket…

Don’t ask me to fully explain why this works as well as it does, it just does, so I’m sharing it with you.

1/4″ closed cell foam, with one-sided adhesive, is the material used. Hammer slap, in my .25 Cricket, was reduced by at least 50%…(Personally, I believe it’s closer to 75%) I bought one sheet of foam, 12″X12″ and it cost about $3.00 shipped. Trimmed it with an X-acto knife. A razor blade would do nicely as well. It MUST be the dense closed cell foam.

Previously, I had drilled six 1.5mm holes in the shroud and had excellent shroud results, but the hammer slap was still quite loud. Now, the hammer slap is “muffled”, and quite difficult to hear. My .25 Cricket is now seriously quiet, except for the pellet impact. I can’t do anything about that.

Thicker 1/2″ foam might work better, but cosmetically it would stick out, although I’m certain there are those among us who could shave that corner down along the stock’s edge, and make it look fine.

So, there it is, for what it’s worth. My goal is to get as near to dead silent as possible. I’m still experimenting, but these two mods, foam and vented shroud, have been tested and found effective by me on the .25 Cricket. Your milage may vary, but you will never know unless you pick up some closed cell foam and try it yourself.

So, what exactly is that “hammer slap “mod?
I would love to see the pictures. Hoot:

Unfortunately he nor NC will ship to my country, I am on my own on this one 😥

But he may be willing to give you some advice on how to proceed with your own build.
WTF do you need the LDC for anyways ? The gun is more than quiet enough.
The Yanks are trying to make noiseless airguns but you don’t need to jump on that bandwagon. The pellet hitting a target – or Quarry – at 275-280 mps sounds far more than the measly muzzle report from a .22 cal PCP. Leave good enough alone is my humble advice ..

Cricket I like your new avatar, much better than what you had before

Captain Hoot, would you care to explain to me where you drilled the 1.5mm hole in the cricket shroud?

Very interesting thread, too bad the pics don’t work. I wish I could get a hold of a slip on LDC for my cricket, anyone have any tips on how to make the LDC slip on? I already have the internal parts ready, but I can’t figure out how to slip a pipe over the oem shroud, do i need a pipe that is thin enough in order to fit between the shroud and airtube?

If the pipe is not thin enough then it is VERY little space on the .22 cricket shroud to fit the ldc, any ideas?

A late response and sorry for that.

Yes, I would purchase this NV scope again. It cost $600 for the longest time and I couldn’t get it. Then it dropped down to the low $500 range and I grabbed one.

I do recommend obtaining a full 5 WATT 850nM led light on Ebay for about $35.00 to extend your distance. The included NV light is .450mW,about 1/2 Watt, so the 5 Watt can reach out and touch someone at a distance. It can be mounted with a simple 1″ scope ring onto a picatinny mount under the forearm, or where-ever!

If I buy another Hawke SW 8-32×56 SR Pro I can swing the MK410 at the same time on my 30 cal Cricket scope budget. I have been reading the reviews and the coyotes hunters really like this model in terms of performance for the $$ out to about 100 yards using the illuminator. For my use 50-60 yards would be sufficient. $490 seems to be the going price on Amazon. Is that about right Hoot? Seems decent for a Gen 1 5x scope. Would you buy again?

It’s for when I put my MK410 night vision scope on the Cricket. I don’t care what the Cricket looks like in the middle of the night. This is for those occasions when absolutely no one needs to know your business…these modifications make that more of a possibility. No, I don’t plan on killing anyone, but there are mice, rats, feral domestic animals, and pigeons in awkward locations that need to be “managed”.

I adamantly deny having said, or written, any of the above, and have no idea how these remarks got posted on this forum!

Why cant we use anti slap mode like on airforce breech / hammer oring mods? Which I think will address the problem more directly. I have not open up the inside of mine yet, just a theory now.

I managed to find a couple of the Cricket foam damper pics.

My photobucket account got up to 98% full and I had to delete a bunch of stuff.

I hope this helps.

What happened to the pictures? Very interesting subject, pleases repost the pictures?

I would also like to see the pics if it is at all possible.

Hoot,
I’m a bit late, seeing your post of foam on breach area. All you’re previous pic’s have been deleted.
Thanks Terry

Just Ran across this while looking for some foam.

got it here. http://getfoaminsulation.com/?p=142

One area where open cell foams out perform closed cell foams is in sound deadening. Most sound travels through air movement. Both open and closed cell foams are air barriers and therefore good sound barriers. This means that both foams will do a good job of “blocking” or “deflecting” external noise from your buildings or other insulated spaces. Open cell foams however will in effect “absorb” the sound as does carpet, soft furniture and heavy drapes or tapestries.

Stan

Zoco, I changed my closed cell foam to a silicone rubber closed cell foam. It is much denser and thus a better sound damper.

I found it on Ebay for a very low price, and in small pieces just right for our use.

I’m certain there are better materials available, but they remain to be found and tested.

My ultimate goal is dead silence, except for pellet impact. It may be impossible, but I’m going to keep trying. I’ve ordered a custom Neil Clague Cricket slip-on over the shroud Moderator.

The OEM shroud, with the vent holes is really quiet, but I want more. Eight inches more…and Neil said he could come up with a grip fit 10″ moderator, 2″ for shroud fit, 8″ for moderation. Perhaps some plastic grub screws to hold it on.

“Why?” you ask? It’s for when I put my MK410 night vision scope on the Cricket. I don’t care what the Cricket looks like in the middle of the night.
