I Did It Again….!
I picked up a “used” Made in the USA tack-driver of an air rifle recently, well actually I get it on Monday. It was one of those “once in a lifetime” deals that was not to be passed over, exacerbated by the fact there was someone second in line waiting to swoop in and grab it if I didn’t.
It’s a early production model that has been tweaked by some of the lesser known but highly influential tuners/modders in the airgun community. Sorry I can’t say exactly who, i’ve been sworn to secrecy and would if I could. 😯
It wasn’t cheap but total awesomeness never is in this hobby.
Looks like i’ll be airing up the scba tank this weekend, getting the scope in the proper mount, the wheel coated with white tape in anticipation!
I’ve been ‘borrowing’ airguns since I sold the Talon and as sweet as it is to be using some of the best air rifles on the planet it will certainly be sweeter to have one that I can call my own!!!

I shoot a bit of HFT and have never not loaded a pellet, nor anyone I know. As for the safety…. 😳 😆

I developed a system so the worst thing that will happen is that I didn’t pull the hammer back and nothing happens when I pull the trigger. But the rifle is still a new experience to me. Shit can;t tell you how many times I went to pull the trigger on the Talon and the fucking safety was still on. At least the USFT doesn’t have a stupid safety. 😉

Ok , Thanks man, thats some good info, i shoot off hand allot, i dont put my gun on the bench but to check zero and consistancy, you know how the impact moves around on the air force stuff. i will be playing around with this to see what i can do with the condor.
I have a 20 foot pond setting for the condor that is very accurate, 14 grain at 800 fps, i need to set the gun back up to that and play around,
I have used a rifle sling and it helps allot, that strap system is bad ass, i will rig myself up with something like that to practice.
1/4″ holes are actually against the rules I believe, it’s 3/8″ minimum in the match and I think they can only be a maximum of 25 or 30 yards away.
Depending on the class your in (anything but WFTF, world field target federation class) you can use a jacket and or a harness. The harness is key, I shot a 29/48 without one and then a 43/48 with one.

I borrowed one of the good ones for the 43/48 score and used the bad one (bought it used for half price) and shot a 39/48 and a 38/48 with it. I have a good one on order for next years FT season, the straps on the Primal Gear item are too low on the back (around the waist area) so there is a tendency for my knees to pivot and so I rotate a little on my butt and it creates a right to left sweeping motion easily. I yanked quite a few shots that I didn’t with the other harness. Also the Steady Aim harness (the good one) has a cross strap between the knee, I had to seriously modify the Primal Gear harness to get a cross strap or it would have been totally useless.
The harness makes the knees a really steady platform, it’s near bench rest stable and since there is no recoil from most field target rifles you don’t need the rifle to slide backwards on your knees… It can easily be setup in the field so it could be used for hunting as well.
1/4″ hole for target, Daaaaam! , now thats a challenge, do you see the 1/4″ in a match. that would be tuff with a 22. at least you get a little wobble room with the 177
what restriction do yu have for straps etc, can you use a sling or jacket. i see the pics of guys resting on there knee but no straps.
For our match it’s 48 shots and all shots count during the match (no sighters)… There is a sight in period prior to the match so it’s not a cold start. If you mess up your clicks and find yourself a whole turn out things can get messed up quickly! The real kicker is if you forget to load a pellet and break the sear the “shot” counts as a miss…
I made a special sight in target for determining my clicks at difference distances, it was basically a bunch of horizontal lines (about 1″ apart) on the piece of paper and I set them at 10,20,25,30,40 & 50 yards to start. I found the 25 & 30 yards have the same zero and then worked my way back to 50 than forward to 10. I shoot the target and then walk the poi up with clicks until it’s on the line i’m aiming at and then write down the number and move to the next target.
Dick Otten of Rhino Targets (used to be After Hours TArgets) makes a target called the Super Popper with a rotating disc that has different kill zone diameters so you can do close and far kz’s with the same target.

I have one of those and one of his Rhino targets (Crow #1, 1 1/4″ kz), great targets and really well made, he was an aero engineer I believe.
SSuper cool man, sounds like you really have it well on the way. I am going to have to set up a simulated field target set up and try it out with the condor. maybe have paper targets on solid moveable bullet stops , walk them out at unknow distance then shoot. Huuum , that could be fun.
My condor is plenty accurate for this, but the way the impact moves around slightly would be a killer for the most precise pellet placement over a larger shot string,
How many shots in a match, can you have sighter shots to check zero.

Just wait for when I get the last piece of wood off of her… 😈 Plus half the beauty of the rifle is the handling and shooting from a field target position. LD sure did design one hell of a rifle, if you ever get a chance to shoot one of these ugly bitchez don’t pass it up! 😉
The rifle loves JSB Exact Heavies, shoots at around 17fpe from 1600-1300psi. I need to do a chrony run to see where the velocity drops off but so far I have used about 200psi from my 44cf tank in about 200+300 shots. 😯 It’s supposed to get about 30-40 shots from full before the poi starts to drop.
Competition Update: I scored a 38/48 for today’s ft match with my shitty scope and worthless Primal Gear pos harness (the knee straps are attached too low at the back, avoid buying a Primal Gear harness at all cost). Even though it was only 80% it was still a good show considering I had only had my clicks for 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 & 50 yards at the start of the match and most targets were somewhere in between. I split the standing off hand targets (2 misses, 2 hits, it’s fucking tough to hit a 5/8″ hole at almost 30 yards) and only missed two other targets due to the lack of not having the proper clicks worked out. Once I get the proper harness and a decent scope i’ll get back to the low to mid 40’s…

I seen it happen a couple times. Shoot, pull the bolt back, range, click, pull the hammer back and then forget to close the breech (on the USFT mostly), usually it’s because the shooter is talking to the other guy on the lane. I did it twice before I was used to the whole USFT system when I was using a borrowed rifle and getting coached while competing… 😳
After the Talon where it sets the hammer when you cycle the breech, it was hard to get used to having to cycle the bolt and then cock the hammer separately… On firearms cycling the bolt resets the hammer or on pistols when cycling the hammer rotates the cylinder… The USFT system isn;t like anything else out there that’s for sure…
Luckily on Sunday I spared myself some embarrassment and never fired an empty chamber… 😀
And the times when I forgot to cock the hammer I had the best holds of the day too. 😡
