Sorry, I don’t see ‘grits string as being anything to write home about. Thats a real run of the mill curve. Anyone, fill your bottle to 3000, turn the wheel down low, and you will get pretty much the same shape. My idea of a well tuned rifle is getting a decent long plateau, the ‘inverted bathtub’ as someone put it. A few usable shots as it comes up to the plateau, then a nice long string of stable +/- 10fps shots before it drops off again.

if so i dont realize it i just thought i had my gun shooting good but from the looks of it i dont

Well, maybe all that practice has made you such a good shot that you just naturally compensate for the drop of the pellet. That’s actually possible. But with a 138 FPS spread there IS a change in POI.

i understand what ur saying man i just wish u could see it with ur own two eyes thats all i have caught hell with this gun after i tore it completly down and when i think im shooting good i always get degraded for what i do .sincei hurt my back at work all i do is shoot i shoot between 200-600 rds a day i really do think i would see a POI change

Here’s why you might get the idea that I’m blasting on you:

quote :

my first 30 shots have no poi change

That’s just not true. You have a spread of over 138 FPS in those shots and that means there’s a POI shift.

I’m glad you’re happy with the gun and the settings but putting out stuff that requires magic bothers me.

quote rj-porter:

what did i miss here y all of a sudden am i getting blasted on i was just saying how my gun was shooting and now its like im wrong or something i would love to get more shots at these numbers im gonna try 80’s settings and see what i get

If we were to come out and blast you it would be obvious… I was happy with what I was getting but after seeing 80’s string i’m not really happy no more…

I would try two dimes next and move up to 80’s settings slowly. Every valve is different and your sweet spot may be a slightly smaller gap than another valve. Shit, I have two Talon valves that aren’t even close!!!

I think for many of us, part of the beauty of these rifles is the ease of use and the ability to change barrels and power settings (top hat & power wheel) in about the same time it takes to write this post… I spend more time zeroing my scope than switching barrels and I made a th gap adjustment the other day in a minute. Every tie I procrastinate and then wonder why after it’s so quick and easy…

And part of the fun is helping others tinker and adjust past what even they thought was possible. But I can see your hesitation and not having your gauges makes replicating your gaps again really difficult… So don’t let me rub you the wrong way, i’m just a nerd going techie. 😆

Yeah, 1/2″ drop is not bad at all if you know it’s happening. But it definitely is a POI shift!

I don’t mind someone being happy with their gun, I just don’t want to read some myth about it defying the laws of nature!

quote Jerry:

I ran the chairgun numbers and with the OP numbers the POI shift at 50 is 1/2″ and about 3 times that at 75 yards over the 138 FPS spread.

Which is not bad at all for 50 yard shooting… And still within a minute of bird at 75 yards if you know it’s going to drop.

What I don’t get is his TH setting is pretty small and he isn’t getting that many shots for the pressure when compared to 80’s string and tophat setting… 😕 But I always have to remember that all these valves are different and one man’s results will probably not be another’s…

Funny part is he says “I’ll leave it alone until…”. I was going to leave my rifle alone until I saw 80’s string… 😆 😯 I’m hoping I can get something similar with this new .25cal barrel and a Condor valve/weight setup…

If he’s happy, hey, what can I say…

synopsys,

I thought your point was pretty clearly made with that comparison. Apparently the point of the OP was not to suggest a optimum setting had been found or even that an interim setting on the way to best had been found…but just “here’s a string and settings I’m happy with.”

I ran the chairgun numbers and with the OP numbers the POI shift at 50 is 1/2″ and about 3 times that at 75 yards over the 138 FPS spread.

I don’t need to run the numbers to see that 80 has a lot more shots in a much tighter spread to hunt with. And, he’s giving away only a trivial amount of power to get them.

i have feeler gauges and a micrometer just miss placed them my top hat has been set at all different settings this one just works best for my setup i dont know why but thats how it is anyhow im really happy with it yesterday i killed 9 english sparrows at bout 70 yds aiming for the heads i hit there bodies i love it

80’s setup doesn’t deliver the 1099 fps number but for a power, speed and consistency you can’t get any better than that… If you need the power for out in the field, fill to near full and fire off 5 or 6 shots to get the curve up and then you’ll have about twice the shots at nearly the same power shot after shot…

I’m measuring a quarter at 0.067″-0.069″ if you have a stock Condor that’s a relatively small gap… You may want to grab a cheap set of feeler gauges from an auto parts store. Not very expensive and they make measuring and setting the tophat really quick and simple…

Two dimes are about 0.102″-0.107″ and two pennies are 0.113″-0.121″ if you want to open the gap before going to the store…

I have one like the one below, you can take the pin out and separate all the leafs and stack the dimension you want to the 0.001″… $5.

That’s a great curve there. If you want the first shot to be in the 1050 range, you can just fill to 2600 and know you are in the heart of the curve and get plenty of shots for a day’s hunting.

Here is a string I shot from my .22 24″ barrel stock condor. Top hat around .105, Power wheel on 3. Shooting Kodiak heavies 21.10 gr (highest fpe was 55, lowest on shot # 50 was 40.795 fpe. It took me 5 or six shots to climb past the 1000 fps mark, but I had over 40 shots well over 1000 fps after.

Your first shot and your 30th are 138.1 FPS apart and you have NO POI change? Awesome, don’t change a thing.

Those that advise you to tune for a curve also assume that when hunting you might decide to fill the gun to where your first shot is right in the sweet spot, not far down the curve…

The fact is that you will always have a curve with an unregulated gun, you’ve just chosen to use the back half of the curve.
