Q:

I’m looking for a light-weight scope for a Short

(sigh) the search goes on. I desire something compact, and light weight so as not to make the Short top-heavy. The gun will mainly be used for target shooting inside of 50 yards. Still, old eyes need to see. I know I don’t want a duplex reticle. AO would be nice. If I can see to place shots inside 1 inch (25mm) at 25 yards, I’d be happy. Back to Amazon.
thanks,
Darryl

Depends on the stock, a heavy synthetic stock and the scope can be heavy, a lightweight stock and it will be top heavy with big scope.

So it seems to be. I’m sure I’ll sort it out (sooner or later). How much does a scope have to weigh to make a Short feel top-heavy? Depends on how the gun will be used, I’m sure. Shooting from a rest makes it no big deal.

DT, you are spot on, sad for me to say. I’ve analyzed scoping my Mutant Short (it arrives tomorrow, back from a regulator check-up). I was recently thinking to try my 4-14×44 BSA FFP on it. That scope currently sits on my 14-fpe Parker-Hale Phoenix. Someone told me my R3M deserves better glass, so the SWFA Classic 16x adorns it. Yet, I’ve taken that scope off as I wait for the Short to arrive. I’d bought a scope, but sent it back with a canted reticle. It also had a CQB reticle, so…When I think of how I envision using the Short, a fixed-magnification scope seems the ticket. Then my head spins and I’m starting over again. DATA overload. I think I’m close to a decision (for the umteenth time). 😳

Darryl,

Are we ever going to see pics of your new scope? I know, analysis paralysis is a terrible thing! 😆

thanks Cricket. Can’t know too much about making a good decision. eyes open.

Just remember that High or Medium or Low can vary from brands, the best is to know the actual height that the rings build

What Athlon Optics scopes are those? I have the Talos 4-14 FFP scope and love it. Waiting on a Athlon Optics 6-24 FFP…

From top to bottom:
– Athlon Talos BTR 4-14×44 FFP
– Bushnell LRHS 3-12×44 FFP
– Athlon Midas BTR 4.5-27×50 SFP

Rings are NightForce Ultralite A107
Bubble levels are Holland’s Signature Series Anti-Cant
Caps are Vortex Defender Flip Cap (mounted sideways)

that’s pretty good advice about comfort, Elmer. I’ll adjust my thinking a little bit to move comfort higher up on the list of conscious considerations. I’d gotten fixated on weight and began looking to a smaller scope bell. I know better, but your advice reminded me to think about it. I have a 42mm on my Edgun but I don’t recall, without looking at it, what ring height I used.
much appreciated,
Darryl

Here’s another Sightron option that is Mil Dot. List is $249. Optic Planet is $179 shipped but out of stock.

SIH 4-12X40 FTMD 17 oz.

Hope this helps! I am looking at one for my Lelya .20

All these have the same exact 1.125″ high rings. The Edgun has a 4.5-27x50mm scope. The clearance on it is very close based on how far back I mounted it due to my eye relief preference. The rail on the Edgun is a tad longer than the others. For 44mm objective, you shouldn’t have any clearance issues with 1.125″ high rings. The bell will clear the rail even if it’s mounted way back (the scope cap might not though). For 50mm objective using this height rings, it may depend on the shape of your objective bell and overall length of your scope since you need it to clear the bell. The 50mm objective bell won’t sit on the rail without touching.

Thank’s ElmerFudd, that helps me a lot as I am preparing to buy a scope for my Short. Looking at 44mm to 50mm and needed ring height

Bud

Both of my scopes pictured are 44mm objective and I have 1.125″ high 30mm rings. I suppose if you mount them a tad further forward you can get away with 1.00″ medium rings and the objective bell will clear the scope rail. Personally I wouldn’t go higher in ring height. Going with medium rings may work but you might need to cant your head and that may be uncomfortable. A lot of it has to do with the shape of your face. If you can get away with a lower scope to bore height/distance that’s great but I wouldn’t sacrifice that for comfort though.

Mtc connect?

I’ve always looked at this scope…but just a tad more than I want to spend right now. TBH if the gun (Mutant Short) fits my urban shooting criteria (lower fpe), I might take the SWFA scope off the R3M (and sell the R3M). crazy, eh?
