Q:

In Defense of the auto mechanism, old thread, got off topic

Some will be surprised with this but I have kind of debriefed my shooting experience of yesterday and I think I was just not ” getting it “. This is my opinions only and is intended to kind of steer the expectations and thinking about how this system works. I was judging it before I shot it and Ed was wise enough to see this…………

…………………….

I have been working with mine all morning and I have come to a completely different line of thinking now. I am going the write this up as a list of individual thoughts or statements to see if it flows better. I had just previously typed for an hour and lost it some how and I did not like how it read anyway. This way I can cut and paste to get the order logical.

My antisieze was a bad idea, it is not a lube it is antisieze, however it did seem to provide some laping and polish. I have cleaned again and used white lithium grease until I can get some moly paste.

Taking the cam out was dumb as Ed provided us a disconnect lever that works perfectly. Duh..

Even when the mag position is slightly off the bolt is designed to correct it and this is fine, the pellet is not damaged in any way during the process, on the nose or tail and it only changes the way it feels a little bit as the bolt closes. This is a non issue and does not constitute ” my gun is not working “. It is working exactly as designed and it works just fine.

It might be a bit smoother if it did align perfectly every time but Ed was asked for a multi shot and those asking were idiots if they thought it would not change the feel of the bolt when this happened. It works !!! and it offers features/ options others do not have as far as I know.

I have pushed many pellets out of the barrel to substantiate the above statement. Shooting two cards later today will do so better, one auto advanced and one finger rolled and report back.

We now have a very neat feature and choice with the disconnect in that we can still load as we go and it is just as easy or easier to do so, due to the ergonomics of inserting the pellet in the back of the mag while holding the gun in any position and we can still enjoy the old smooth bolt action when disconnected, no other gun I am aware of offers this !!! if you don’t like this you haven’t shot your gun enough yet, get off the computer and go shoot the hell out of it.

There was always a under realized benefit of break barrel guns in then you did not let go of the pellet until it was secure in the barrel, we got that back even if we did not know we did not have it in the first place.

This gun is working and if there is any issue, at least in my case, it was perception based, and the accuracy is not compromised.

As to Ed saying, ” Just shoot the gun ” ,…………. I actually have a couple of Russian friends and you have to understand they use some words differently than us and it affects the actual meaning. Ed said ” shoot the gun ” and I am pretty sure he was, in American speak, saying ” If you will just stop talking go shoot it you will see that it works very well, you will realize the benefits and still hit where you aim.” !!! In fact I will take this a step further and say he might have even been saying ” I have shot them a lot in development and you will come to like the new mag design as it works, sizes pellets, provides options as how to process pellets to the chamber and has no disadvantages “. If he did not think it was great he would not be thinking along the line of doing away with the old R3 design so therefore he is quite happy with this design. My trust in his judgment helped me see the light and understand what the gun is offering and doing. I shot for hours yesterday, slept on it last night and now realized he is right, there is nothing to not like here. I still want a 2.5 but now it is more to collect it. For what it is worth I am working towards possessing one of every model R2.5. R3 and R3M, Leyla

I will say I would like a glassy smooth bolt feel from beginning to end like the R3 but that is not possible with what has to happen when using an auto advance mechanism, nobody else’s is either. Ed has given us and his guns both the option to have it both ways. Smooth as the old and auto advance if you desire. This was an obvious intention or there would be no disconnect. If it was solely for not double loading we could of just pulled the mag. and I would of expected that in a design that is known for simplicity.

Show me to problems it is causing with loading or accuracy or you are full of hot air and wasting words. I am headed to the range, for some more 30 yard testing and breakin due to cold and convenience of it. 100 will be the deal but not for me today. i’ll leave it to you warm weather guys.

I am 99.9 % sure his gun is normal as the others so I don’t see that other gun will improve the situation. As I told before, the point is not in the gun, that is in the head, I have no possibility to replace it.

Either way..it explains it all.

One should not expect a HEAVY DUTY system..that also sizes(or reshapes) pellet (more friction) to be super butter smooth.
I would expect it to have more drag than a whimpy system

Its heavy built to last forever, and to compare it to the WHIMPY mechanism with little springs and levers as in an fx.. or other gun is unfair

Maybe MG has a bad one, As loud as he is screaming, I tend to believe him.

But, ED has come straight forward and offered to refund. What more could anyone ask?

My opinion of ED has went up several notches..

Doug…

Those that have torn em down..does it really size the pellets?
I only have an older R2.5 so little or no knowledge of the inner working of this system other than the pics.

But, I know one thing.

Ed’s guns are built SUPER HEAVY DUTY, and so are the mags and indexing systems.
Its unfair to compair the indexing system of an Edgun to that of an FX..or any other gun.

For what it is worth, I am pin gauging the entry side of the mags at .2575 and the exit side at .2525. I am going to take some JSB’s back after lunch and run them across the optical comparator to see what they actually measure. They do for a fact enter easily and exit with the skirt dragging heavy. I don’t think the heads ever touch, so maybe I should of said reshaping the skirts for consistency, rather than sizing, poor choice of words !!! . I was only shooting 30 yards yesterday but I sent some pretty bent skirts through the mags and down range for curiosity and I only had one flier all day and I cannot be sure now but I don’t think it was a bent skirt pellet . I’ll add my pellet size findings here later today.

Nothing since so I edited:

I measured a few at the head and skirt ends and I would average the heads at .251 to ..2515 so still .001 smaller than the mag. Exit side but close enough to be well guided, huh !!

The skirt end I am getting more variation with a range of .258 to .2595 so they are getting rounded up and pinched down .001 to maybe .003.

Somebody else will know more what the effect of this would be as I only assume this happened in the breach block on other guns before entering the barrel ??

It would seem to me that pellet management leading up to the barrel entry is a factor in accuracy and this skirt truing and guided alignment is an improvement over single loads. Once again this is only my laymen’s logic. I just know in any game consistency is your friend.

Very nice. The stock on my std 30 is much improved too over my .25 in oil finish. I think MG got the piece of coal for xmas.

My 25 R3M Standard arrived today. This is my 3rd Edgun. I was a little anxious after reading all the negative posts. I am happy to report that mine works exactly as advertised. It is definitely a little harder to cock but that is it. I just put a 100 pellets through it without no problems at all feeding. The pellets don’t fall out of the mags and so far the anodizing is still on the mags. Accuracy is what you would expect. Mine is shooting at 930 FPS and I was able to get 45 good shots out of it from a 200 bar fill. I even got a decent looking piece of wood!

Now if Ed would build some .177 Lelyas for the USA….

Clint

Ed,
Thanks for posting, to this topic.

I still think the R3M is amazing when you consider how few added parts you used to create multi. from the original R3 design. I like the simplicity and no multiple linkages and springs and parts to make it work. This gun will be shooting and adored by it’s owners when some other designs are on a shelf broken or with some little part missing. I can appreciate it.

Doug…

Thanks for the post, Ride. Finally, some auto vs. manual advance comparison. Until rings arrive, I won’t be able to perform a similar test. I have been cycling loaded and unloaded mags in auto, outdoors, firing shots into a hillside for now, just to check function. The action is smoother on the bolt after a couple hundred+ cycles, but I’m hoping it will wear-in further. Will keep everything as delivered, for now.

Wingman/ ED, on a typical .25, about how many shots (e.g. 1,000, 3,000) before the mechanism is properly “broken in”? Much of the concern, for some of us, was the guns upon arrival-mine was painfully hard to cock at first; it felt like sand was in the bolt. Now, it’s a lot better. Add this to the alignment oddity and it is natural to worry. This is nothing about accuracy- we are not, as Wingman hints, familiar with this kind of break-in process and have never seen a two-step alignment.

I passed it through in Russia already, I call it “mass panic”. One gets the gun, while waiting he reads a lot about the gun on forums. When he gets the gun, he is ready the gun is bullshit based on the forum oppinions (I wonder why to buy it being sure that it doesn’t worth the money). Not testing the gun, not shooting, not getting used to it one disassemble it looking for the troubles. Some of them being unable to make it in a proper way just destroy it and they claim me “Bloody Ed made a shit gun, it doesn’t work” not even testing it before they got into it just to have at least two dots to compare the result before and after. Some of them, with hands grown up from a right place got the working gun and thought to themselves “I am a clever man, could repair the shit gun and got a sweet one!” being very proud of themselves 🙂 not even knowing what would be if they just use it from the beginning.

More over — some people in Russia even make business on it, offering people “tuning service” and people blinded with forum oppinions write me “Ed, no offence, but could you send my gun to Mr. … he will make a tuning?” And I don’t care, that is client’s money, if he wants to pay more just for wizard tuning, that is his right, if he feels much better, menatally, it cost money, no doubt 🙂 Others, who didn’t get influenced by mass panic just get the gun, use it and got the same or better results then those after “tuning”. It is all phsycology thing, not the gun 🙂

And I am very glad that in every sociaty there are people like topic starter who can break the panic and begint to think 🙂

So, just shoot it 🙂 and enjoy it. If there is some issues (I never ever said that I make a perfect guns) I will try to be as helpfull as I can as well as other good engineers at this forum (like Wingman NZ).

PS. Sorry for my English, lack of practise 🙁

Somebody tell me cause I really don’t know just how tight can one of these targets can look with a real shooter that knows his gun, do guys shoot 2500’s indoor at 30 ?? I won’t be insulted as I know mine are sloppy, new gun not tuned, blind shooter, just curious ?? Saying nice shooting is just being nice in this case, kind of like saying have a good day !!!

Good constructive post Wing, I am a tinkerer, comes from 30 years of racing everything with wheels, wings or a keel so I have wrenched a LOT and for that reason i fail to see assembly magic in the action area so I am willing to study tinker and work on \\that part as it is in my comfort zone. As for the breach block forward end I wouldn’t touch it at this point, just don’t know anything about it other than it will be better if I leave it alone for the time being. I hope someone else chimes in on this one detail but I am pretty sure I saw two different types of lubricants in the bolt block assy. so if I am right Ed does have a detailed plan inside there for natural breakin !!!

I think my way just accelerated the breakin as these areas feel smoother now. I’m will be taking your advice and seeking out some high % moly paste for the near future, in dissemble, and re-lube part 3. ” The Molly ” .

Ride,

Thank you to take your time to write up….. With positive attitude try your new R3M
out & find the way to make it work perfectly for you

I wish everything will workout for you,

Actually !! I shot 3 full cards but I rolled the mag this one with it disconnected so I didn’t post it with the others, it is here. I actually did have a mystery flier on this one, #10, second down on the right missed the card completely for some reason, felt good as any other shot. but ??? I re-shot that bull and it hit sweet. Was the only anomaly of the day… That is the world of shooting pellets I guess. I have not yet, but desperately need to work my trigger pull down next and I know from experience I can tighten up a good little bit from that alone. I am getting old, my eyes are on the second surgery and and I have to wear my bifocals when I shoot so i am quite satisfied but also incapable of shooting this gun up to it’s potential from a knowledge or skill standpoint, just fun for me.

quote SECoda:

Very well thought out write up. I don’t know if it applies in this case but folks seem to want to “fix” some break-in issues on these guns before they are broken in. There may very well be an MS issue but they just want to get the wrenches out and crank on them. That said there is nothing wrong with taking your gun apart if that is a part of the hobby for you but for pete’s sake at least give the gun a little time to break in. If it is kind of working and nothing is being harmed, put a few tins through it and then see what really needs fixing. 😉

Glad to see it’s working correctly. 😀

Well put Coda, I did warned against this and I knew this backlash was coming… let them run in guys and then moly them…
From observing this forum I can see everyone just wants to pull there guns apart and make them better before they even try them out and it is just the mechanical nature of most of you. I pulled all my toys apart as a kid to see how they worked too but there is a time were you must just simply enjoy them. New comers seem to hang off every word posted here and most is just poison and not positive.. I cringe inside every time I see someone drill their shroud holes bigger etc.. like the Edgun is even noisy!
There so much “If your gun doesnt need fixing , fix it until it does” attitude here and Im very reluctant to post any advise for those that need it as those that dont also adopt it..
Dont be so quick to jump on the band wagon and make your own tests first.

My advice also is “just shoot it” and run it in, initial problems will either go away or get worse with the run in period and at that point Im sure Ed and others will be here to help you. That is truly what this brotherhood is about.

Regards, Wingman.
