In the mood for a new pistol… suggestions?
I want an accurate pistol plinker that’s also a repeater. Here’s the twist… I’m considering either HPA/CO2 177 Pellet Gun (not BB) or a 22 S/LR Revolver.
So.. what would your top pick be for an accurate gas or powder repeater? If you can link to the gun’s product page – all the better.
Price range approx $300 for HPA/CO2 and $500 for a firearm. Scope or laser is a separate budget.

I have had several J frame S&W Kit guns, I bought each one of my kids one at one time or another, my Marine son wore one loose as a kid, yeah I know that is a lot of ammo.
His job at age 7 was to take the family trash out to the dump behind the house 3 times a week in the 6 wheeler and burn it in the burning barrel, he had a kit gun and would shoot a box of shells to make noise to keep the bears away.
Family Services would love that story.
We traded his gun for a 38 special Uberti when he started cowboy shooting, he still regrets that trade.
Having said that, they were not even close to the accuracy of the Ruger pistol. I bought my frist Ruger Standard Auto at 15 years of age, before the 1968 Gun Control law, so there is only a reciept for it, $41.50 is what I paid. And we still have it in the family.
I carried a silenced Ruger auto for years, it was a wonderful gun.

I don’t like revolvers in .22 because the cases stick to the chamber walls and can be a pain to pry out.
The word innaccuracy and Ruger semi-auto don’t belong in the same sentence. 😀 You could actually end up with several Rugers.
The S&W “kit gun” has a cukt following. The browning Buckmark .22 semi-auto is also well regarded. There are many fine .22 pistols, but the Ruger is the king of the hill. Like i said, choose a barrel and never look back.
The Ruger would have been my frist choice, but you said revolver.
Initially I wasn’t drawn to semi because of the inherent inaccuracy of an auto-loader. But I cannot argue with owners of these guns. So the MKIII Target looks great and Crimson Trace sell grip lasers for them when I want quick vs accurate shooting.
So I have two runners for 22LR, the S&W 617 and Ruger MKIII.
Air is looking like 586 6″ 177 and possibly the Benjamin Marauder Pistol due out next month.

id look for a ruger MKIII target or hunter i have the stainless fluted hunter and is an absolute tack driver of a pistol with no issues at all
i got mine brand new for 600 so used will be cheaper im sure
id personally go with the autoloading lr over a revolver
I have a Ruger MKII in stainless steel with the now discontinued 5 1/4″ target barrel. It too has many thousands of rounds through it. You would have to buy a used MKII as they have been replaced with the MKIII.
I know one guy who has a hunter model MKII and he loves it. The MKIII has an american, push button magazine release, a loaded chamber indicator, and a magazine disconnect. Pick a barrel and decide between blue and stainless and never look back.
Way back when I was selling guns, I told people that if they didn’t the MKII that they bought from me, I would buy it from them. Nobody ever took me up on that offer. They’re that good! 😀

I looked at the 586, do you think 4″ or 6″? I stated 177 because I felt 22 might be too expensive and rainbow trajectory for CO2.
Now the 617 is interesting… 10 rounds of 22LR… I’m going to research pricing new/second.
Any other suggestions from folks?

For air power, because you stated .177 S&W 686 or 586 and for a 22 PB S&W 617.

Sounds like the Ruger is a winner. I will start checking pricing for it. I never thought a semi could be so accurate. 🙂
