Initial evaluation of Subssonic Gen2 Drop in insert for TSS
I received my new Subssonic’s Gen2 drop in inserts for my TSS today. First impressions out of the box was…..WOW….this is different….and Delrin….and man do I need to get this in to my Talon SS and see what it will do reaction. I have presently use a 12″ screw in shroud with vented front barrel bushing with the frame vent mod (4ea 1/16 holes) drilled into the underside of the frame.
Here’s the Subssonic Gen2 Drop in insert.
Overall construction and finish are superb. The design is unique. The insert fits snugly into the frame and has an indentation for the barrel end grub screw. (Note the grips I bought and received from Mywifeboughtit this last weekend….sweet I love the grips)
Compared to the screw in shroud, I get back to the short, easy to swing out the back door style and feel of the stock Talon SS. For the backyard stealth gun, the ability to swing the gun around and out of the door is a serious consideration. Nice to have that feeling on my first test run again after the added length of the other shroud
I did have a small issue with removing the insert. The fit is tight and I couldn’t get enough of a grip on the barrel end to pull it out. That was easily solved by reaching in with a small pick, hooking one of the inner lips of the insert and pulling it out. Maybe a couple of indenations on each side to grab with a fingernail would be in order? Not sure it this would ruin the look of the polished fit or not.

As for sound test compared to my internal 12″ shroud, which is pretty close to hammer slap quiet, Subssonics’ Gen2 drop in insert is just a tiny bit louder but not by much and still very backyard friendly. I tested at night and always evaulate the sound of the gun firing so that the report won’t have any of the neighbors looking up in their living rooms and saying WTF was that??? They definitely won’t with Subs new Gen2 drop in insert. Considering that the cost is very reasonable compared to other choices with the added benefit of getting back to the standard TSS factory length of 32 inches for improved door swing factor, I think it’s definitely worth having.

I wonder if Knurling the end cap would work or look ok? I see the end cap on your longer LDC is knurled… 😀

Well I guess I’m the 4th ,I received mine yesterday and it is a huge difference to my home made approach I just got my first talon a few weeks ago and it was all stock so I cant really compare it to a shroud, but I can compare it to a 850 HPA with a TKO ldc and it is much quieter than that is.
The endcap fit snugly into my frame but I was wondering if you cut a groove for a rubber o-ring is something to consider. Cut it between the grub screw indentation and outer lip of the endcap?
Might be worth testing. Would you have to reduce the diameter of the encamp to make it work and trade off one thing for the other?
Well so far i’ve gotten feed back from three of the four testers that recieved the Gen2 insert (i havnt heard anything form the 4th yet 🙄 ) and its the same thing accross the board…. So these things will be ready to ship by middle of this month with the new option of eigther an aluminum end cap or black delrin. Im working on getting a cost for annodizing the end caps so that they match the frame and that is my biggest hold up yet… I will post more on my insert thread….

I also have been given the opportunity to evaluate one of Subssonics Gen2 inserts, and I must say I have been very impressed as well. Having owned 3 of his shrouds before receiving this one, they all have one thing in common and that is quality construction.
As I stated in an earlier post, the drop in insert is not quite as quiet as one of his extended Shrouds, But It is a VAST improvement over the hair curler or Washer Stack setup. In my opinion, his Gen2 insert is more effective then his GEN1 version. I happen to own one of those also and Love the way it works as well, so he basically improved something that worked great already….a Win Win for everybody
I will do some further testing of decibel levels as soon as the weather breaks I too also like the fact that it did not increase the length of my gun, keeping it nice and stealth for backyard sniping 😆
Another thing I would like to point out is Greg’s commitment to his customers. If there is ever an issue with anything he makes, He will do whatever is needed to make it right. He is a stand up guy and an excellent machinist, I would not hesitate to buy anything from him.

knurling delrin wouldn’t work but i will probibly cut a notch in the cap to allow you to get a coin or finger nail in their to pop it out….
