Q:

Is the Edgun still worth $2000?

Hi all, I just received Tony’s email today stating that he’ll have the multi-shot Edgun in stock by the end of the week. My question is: Are they still worth their

$2000 price tag? This is nearly 150% the price of a new walnut cricket from WildWest with the new price drop. 😯 I really like the Edgun but am having a

hard time justifying the extra $500 or so. If those of you who own both guns can provide me with your insight, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks everyone for your input. It looks like I’m going to go ahead and get the Edgun. I’ve wanted it for quite a while now, and I feel like I will end up with it anyway even if I go with the cheaper Cricket. Might as well save myself the hassle of buying and then reselling the Cricket a few months down the line.

Good luck with your purchase!

There is a nice used R3 on the AA classifieds for 1450…. Seems the second hand market has dropped…

I remember not to long ago one could ask what they go for new and sell right away. not no more

There you go ! Your answer is echoing : No!
And about the Tuning – it´s not necessary and won´t much effect the accuracy unless here´s something wrong with your Gun to start with. I had mine – out of the box – shooting very well and that´s well enough for me. Trigger adjustment and adjustments for HST can´t be regarded as ” Tuning” but are in fact very much needed to get the most out of your Gun in stock form – which already is much more than 95% of the owners can handle = the Gun outperforms the Shooters ability.
That leads to the next thing : Tuning is fun! That´s also a good way to learn your Gun although diving into it head first is not recommended if you don´t know your way around the workings of a PCP. Both of these BP´s are very easy to work on though so with a modicum of mechanical skills, will to learn, proper Tools and patience most owners can do a lot of things to make the Gun better working and personalized.

I too have been wondering about the tuning of the cricket. Is it a craze where it’s the cool thing to do or is it necessary. The main reason I bought the cricket is so I could get something that’s accurate out of the box with good shot count. Do I really need the extra shot count? If this guns needs to be tuned to shoot 7/8 groups at 70 yards it’s plain and simple not worth the money. So far my 22 has done that for me but not without fixing some things. I’m glad I didn’t pay 1800 bucks for it.

Ok. I may have misunderstood but for me it seemed like you recommended EdGun over the Cricket without knowing anything about the Bug. My bad .. 😉

My FINAL take in this matter: one can’t go wrong with neither if the Goal is to own a high-end BP. Whether either is worth the price? That depends what the buyer is willing to pay for one so i quess they are worth the price taken into consideration both manufacturers sell every single Stick they are capable to wring out from the assembly line.

My EdGun experience wasn’t good and when one has been bitten – twice – that leaves a mark. The one i had first shot very well – untill it didn’t when the breech blew on my face. After that it never shot as it did before the blow-up, untill The Doc finally ,after lots of trial/error, found those out of round/center parts being the culprit and made his own parts to cure the problem.
The second one never shot as well. It needed help from the beginning so i grew tried on the Brand Ed and went over to KalibrGun. Haven’t had one problem with my .25 , yet. I sincerely hope it stays that way too or i’ll go over to Beluga .. NOT !! 😉

My dearest & my beloved brother Ville,

I never said that Cricket is a bad pcp or any thing wrong, ,,,

If you re-read my post I am only talking about Edgun or let say my Edgun …. and that is my enjoyable experience with my edgun so far… no more…..

Thanks for all. ….

Please let me add something else….

AS Ville suggested, please read also other forums.

Personally I have discovered only recently that in UK they are wondering if the Cricket is the most accurate pcp ever made and this means something to me.

In UK they have really a huge experience on pcps and also many great manufacturers are coming from there (Theoben, BSA, Daystate, Air Arms, Ripley, etc. etc) so their opinion counts to me.

Does this mean that the Matador is a bad gun? No certainly not and please feel free to buy tons of them even at 5000$ piece.

+1 Ville.

Sorry guys, just to avoid misunderstandings….

Nobody is trying to hold you back from spending 2000$ of your hard earned (or may be not) cash, go ahead, personally I don’t gain or loose on this.

I think the big advantage of this “information era” is that information, experiences and reviews can spread easily and it’s up to you to take or to leave it.

Personally, based on my own experience, and I’m not speaking about 500 Matadors vs 500 Crickets but just 1 vs 1, personally I couldn’t find anything (and I repeat anything) that could justify the higher price of the Matador compared to the Cricket, actually my own experience just leads me to the opposit conclusion, today the Cricket has the edge over the Matador, that’s it, just my opinion.

Maybe I have just compared a LEMON Matador against a normal Cricket. Could be, why not. Certainly it seems that this year the lemon season is promising….

Another thing I don’t understand is the fact that everybody is sending their Cricket to be tuned without even having seen their gun.

Is this normal? Maybe to you but not to me. Please read all the reviews of the out of the box Crickets and then tell me.

Would I tune my own Cricket? Certainly YES if this can make an already GREAT gun even better and if I need this improvement.

Maybe we can launch a poll to see how many of you US guys want to spend even more for the Matador, instead of 2000$ maybe 2680$ like they already sell in europe and maybe you are lucky and you can please ask ED to raise the price.

I had TWO EdGuns with unacceptable issues. Not one but two. Bought the second one while i patiently waited for the parts for the first one. BIG mistake …. None of those turned out to be worth even
20 $ so yes – you can say i had a “bad experience” with EdGun.
And “five in the World with problems” ??? Come on – start reading this Forum and other Forums in Europe and you’ll see there are a bit more than five problematic ones.
My point was just to point out that you can’t give any un-biased opinion nor advice since you have never as much as seen a real life Cricket – much less shot one. Am i right ?

My dear brother Ville,

I just wanted to answer his question, is the Edgun still worth $2,000?

In my opinion , YES,,,,

See my dear brother,,, sorry that you had a bad experience with your edgun that makes you to not like them any more or at least as you said if Ed could fix your mentioned issues, ,,, maybe this only happened in your Edgun not mine or others, ,, that is why for me YES,,, & for you not,,,
I don’t think there is a brand or manufacturer that manufactured his PCPs at top position without any defects from his first gun till today or till his last gun,,,, isn’t it?

Even defects will happen in aircrafts that their costs exceeds $100,000,000 and some of them more than it ….

It is fair if 5 Edguns or 5 Crickets have issues out of the produced numbers in the world, ,,,

Edit; BTW, i did some pest hunting and some of Starling as well,,,, pigeon head shots at 50 & 70 mtrs …. last hunting killed 2 starlings with one shot … i usually go for hunt with my Father-in-low,,, but the reason that i never didn’t mention it ,,is hunting is prohibited here ,,, but not for starlings that they are not belong to my country or let say they are an Immigrant birds ,,,, and i might clip some pigeon hunting and send it in privet to you ,,,i usually take head shots ,,,

Hi Guys Here’s my take on this, I’ve been talking with some friends at the range we shoot and , there’s 3 crickets and 3 Edguns R3Ms there including mine , All of the Bugs have been at Steve or Ernest
and one has had the trip to Steve twice, Of the 3 Edguns 1 has been to Ernest for a mag rotation polish . The Edguns are built better and not so finicky compared to the Bugs. Of what I have seen so far the Edguns shoot better also, smaller groups. But I cant blame anybody for wanting to save some Money. $2000 for a edgun is to much and $1600 for a Cricket is to much, plus all the cost to ship and tune-up to Steve an Ernest. What I’m hearing and seeing with the current shipments coming out of AoA the Crickets are going to Keep Ernest and Steve really busy, that’s what I call job security. Mine next PCP is going to be a P12===Wingman Special coming up. :fishinghole:

quote SECoda:

…Its a tough competition between both manufacturers.

I think this is true and probably in the future they will alternate the leadership by improving respectively their guns.

But I think as well that in europe were the Cricket sells for 820 USD lesser than the matador for most customers it will be a no brainer on which gun to choose.

As ususally if you have enough cash then you can have both anyway without regretting too much buying overprised but if you can have only one then certainly the Cricket will make you feel less “ripped-off”.

I hear you. My post was pointed towards Hemn since he’s the loudest voice for EdGun without ever having fired a Bug . 😉

My EG vs Cricket experience is the exact opposite of that of yours. Maybe the older Crickets were sloppier by the Breech since mine is very well made and has no fitment issues – neither has the other Crickets i’ve seen.
It sounds like you had the STD stock on it. That one is too short for the .25. I don’t know why they fibble with those stocks over there – seems to be mix & match in several cases. A short ( for the .25) stock would definitely alter the balance.
I myself had two EG’s and both had severe clipping issues and lots of shit that has no place on such expensive AG. Went over to Cricket and have no negative things to say – except those shitty oem o- rings. The gun beats both EG’s in accuracy, function and longevity. Haven’t shot gazillion pellets thru it though.
Maybe we should ask Snipergay ? He doesn´t seem to have much other things to do than make Videos where he´s shooting all kinds of Crickets. He should´ve broke the 1.000.000 pellet barrier by now – on the tunes on that dramatic music he chooses for his soundtracks …

I’m still waiting for any Cricket owner to provide 10k,20k,30k,40k,50k,60k shot update on wear of those little lever gearbox internals and gun overall. Anyone? Anyone? 🙂

this is a Wisdom judgement ,,, great ,,, i totally agree with you ,,,, if Edgun MKII initially had a few indexing issue or bolt needed some effort to cock then after some time each gun has fixed itself automatically ,,, or needed a few work ,,, or at least Ed has updated all new R3M breeches …. i was willing to spend more than $3,000 first when i found my way to import my edgun …. not $2,000 ,,,,,

i don’t say that Cricket is bad ,,,but also they are good,,, but my favorite gun is Edgun ,,,, i did a big risk to get it,,, i paid more for shipping (not from Ed’s side ,,, i paid to another company to ship it from Germany to my country ),,,,, i waited almost two years till i found the way ,,,, i spent almost full my times ,,, i emailed almost 380 emails (or more i believe) to Ed and another dozen emails with several shipping companies ,,,,

if you want to take my **** :2cents: yes, pull the trigger of your pocket and spend more $500 then get your Edgun ….

You really should try a Cricket too. If you´ve only shot one of the current Bullpup´s then that´s the only one you know – kinda one horse – race really. In your case there is only one Bullpup you can compare your EG to and it´s your EG. Right ?
It´s like someone saying “my Car is the best, fastest and most comfortable Car ever made” when the only Car he´s ever driven – or sat in – is his Chevelle.
No offense but in my book if one hasn´t at least tried other options on offer then one isn´t really qualified to declare the winner – let alone be able to give buying advice in this matter. Like said – no offense , just the way i see it. 😉

No offense here. I would never make a formal statement without firsthand experience.
I’ve shot a Cricket 25 long side by side with my Ed 25 and looked it over thoroughly. Couldn’t tell which was louder given both shooting around 885fps.
Trigger was nice but not for me for hunting or my preference on bench. I like a medium length first with distinct stop right at second and a crisp breaking 2nd. The cricket had more of a soft roll from start to finish. I’m sure it could be tweaked more to my liking but that particular one wasn’t. Bulldog stock was nice but plain. I really liked shape of grip on backside and I had already reworked front of my Eds grip and after handling Cricket I reshaped rear. Lever action was clunky and loose feeling especially compared to Air Arms 510,Rapids,FX 400,500 and Boss, Steyrs, even Hammerlis Pnuema felt smoother.
The fact that the cover screw couldn’t be tightend completely or binding occurred was disappointing to see. Also lever hitting cover marring it and a slight rattle on shot from being loose.
Accuracy wise it shot very well, just not as good as my Ed. Both in my hands and owners with both guns shooting similar fps with same pellets. As distance increased crickets groups couldn’t keep up. Crickets 75 yd groups looked like Edguns 100yds.
Wasn’t impressed that gun was shipped missing the pin that all the magazine holders pivot on. They would just fall out of gun onto ground if yo didn’t grab whole thing. I do like the storage system overall though.
Breech roll pin had fallen out twice throughout day. Duct tape helped solve issue until he later drilled/tapped and put in grub screw to solve that problem. Didn’t care for short forestock. When shooting offhand my hand want to naturally be just in front of where it ends. Overall lots to like but just a lot of little things that make me pause.
Like I said. The gearbox longevity of all those little moving parts has been my question from day one. Edguns single bolt so far has shown to hold up exceptionally well.
There’s a lot of 1911s that shake rattle and roll but just keep on working. I’m waiting for reports on if the cricket can do same before I even consider one in my stable.
