Q:

Joe’s .257

Here is the start or Joe’s .257. I had to sand blast off what ever the coating was on the frame because it was thick and I was worried about putting it in the mill and not being square.

Made the barrel bushings today. Because the frame is so short I made the front bushing part of the frame extension. This will extend out 4.75″ and will get a end cap that guides the barrel also.

I had to put it in the mill because the front of the frame wasn’t even close the square.

Trying to make everything that I need to in the 3 jaw before I switch to collet chuck. I need to finish the 2 valves I have and then I can start cutting barrels.

Thats a cool way of working on the frame. Ive been thinkin about trying to make one out of AL tube and square bars which will be bolt/rivetted together for strength and mounting rails.

LOL. RC, that’s funny!

Joe,
I’ve always done that very same thing. I have ENOUGH low powered 125 yards and under guns. I also have a 50 yard and under gun. My logun solo 20 cal is 50-75 yards only. I have a GARAGE only gun too…lol! I love variety as it matches my INTEREST.
I’ve never been the type like some guys that buy 5 Rapid 22 cals…

Can’t wait to get my CORSAIR back up and running 😉

Joe,

Over 100 yard. 😆

The maximum range on a 257420 bullet at your velocity is over 1,600 yards. 😯

Yeah, it will shoot over 100 yards my friend.

RC

Yes, the love around here is second to none!

The long range/power evolution of airguns is upon us and this place is packed with people dedicated to its success! Kudos!!!

Now that I will have my .257 I am going to categorise my AG’s into two sub sub classes. One will be 100 yards and below: My .25 from Tony with 18″ barrel. And the other will be 100 yards and BEYOND: My .257 from Doug!

And I still have my 2250 and Izzy for “indoor plinking” 😎

You Guy’s are the Best! And why I love this place.

RC has been a huge help, and I greatly appreciate it. Thanks RC! I tried some of his cast bullets with not to happy results, But——It kinda sent me down another road. 😉 Both RC’s and Old Goats fault 😆

Tof has been very encouraging, and that is greatly appreciated as well. (It’s your damed fault too!)

Old Goat is setting up a TJ Bbl. for me as we speak. Can’t wait. I am just finishing setting up a ShoeBox compressor that he made me a killer deal on. So finally,(Almost) FREEDOM!!!!! Why Almost? Still buying pellets by the shit load. But, the .257 TJ Barrel will MAKE me get into casting. 😆 😉 A little scary! But I’ll get “R” Done. 😉

And Doug helped me out with a spring. Thank You Doug!
Now if I could just stop breaking tophat stems. 😥

I never thought of this road when I got back into AG’s about 7-8 years ago. Never crossed my mind. And what a fun and interesting road it is!

Thanks Cedric, I will use your findings as a baseline for my gun. Man, I am getting excited!!!!! 😎

Joe,

Just a quick little “FYI” about your power wheel and Dougs valve.

Depending on the bullets (ie..74 gr Lyman, or 100 gr Spitzer) you are gonna have to play with the PW just a tad. And it shouldn’t be more than just a “TAD”.

Now, here is where “I” think you should start based on what i’ve seen on my gun. If Doug is getting that speed at PW 2-1 while using the 74 bullets, then 2-1 on the PW is your Max at that fill pressure (3300) using that bullet. For testing sakes on paper and chrony, you can go as low as about 1-8 on the PW which is half a turn “DOWN” from 2-1. Then thoroughly test it for groups and chrony. If 1-8 isn’t all that great then 2-1 is more than likely your best bet as Doug has already given some great numbers from that PW setting. So now we move onto the heavy bullet with the 102 gr Spitzers. You will want to “START” at PW 2-1 and probably go as high as 2-8 for the heavies with the same fill pressure of 3300 psi. The heavier bullets like RCs Hoch and RJs Spitzers while using Dougs set up just needs a LITTLE change in the PW. And that’s the cool thing about it. So, you should only probably need to use 2-1 for the 74 gr bullets then 2-8 or so for the heavier bullets. Or at least…..VERY CLOSE to those settings.

Turning the gun up to something like 3-8 or 4-1 more than likely will not wield you any gains and you are using unecessary forces on the gun. BUT, YOU SHOULD TEST THERE ANYWAYS JUST TO SEE.

So for comparisons, my gun shoots 1005 with the 74’s on PW 2-8. And on 3-1 it shoots 890-895 with RJ’s and RC’s heavy bullets. On PW3-1 while using the 74’s it will shoot 1015-1020 fps +- but will use a tad bit more air. On PW 2-8, the 100’s will shoot 860 fps or so but will not give a flat FPS shot string. So for me and my gun, its 2-8 for the 74’s and 3-1 for the 82s, 102s and the 109s for best results.

Hope this helps you save on air when you get your gun 😛

Joe,

Charlie and Doug AINT the only ones doing YOUR JOB!

Brotha, I’m stroking the COCKING SLUT on your gun right now 😆

Congrats dude, Doug sent me the numbers today and that’s awesome stuff.

I’m so blessed to have such a great “extended family”. You guys are too good to me 😀 Yes, I’m very excited about what Doug accomplished with this build. Can’t wait to try it out.

RJ is sending me some bullets and Charlie (despite my telling myself that I don’t have time, space, or money to cast) is going to get me started by sending me a gift of a lyman mold and casting pot!!! 😀 Thanks Charlie!

Joe,

I don’t know if you ave checked Chairgun or Handloads.com to see how flat that will shott yet.

I have entered the BC of the 27420, which I assume is what Doug shot for that velocity, and at 1040FPS/177FPE your gun sighted in for 90 yards is only 2.7 inches high at 50 and less than an inch low at 100 yards.

It doesn’t get any better than this: Having Charlie do your “homework” for you 😆 😎

That is simply awesome!

That is great news Doug! I was hoping this early morning boner would subside but know there’s no chance! 😈

Josh is making me a nice batch of lead. Can’t wait to shoot her! Thanks again!!!!
