EDIT: Changed image to show correct spokes for indicating BEFORE cocking.
Just paint the correct spokes. At least on the .22 magazine, the spokes are visible on the right rear of the magazine.
If you paint the spokes I did in this image, a glance BEFORE cocking lets you know when you are on the last round or empty.
How about a photo of the empty mag out of the gun??
