Tron, check out wikpedia on firearm silencers lots of informative info. From what we know 6″ beyond the end of barrel works fine at 1″ ID or so. What about 4″ at 2″ ID its the same volume A spacer in front of the barrel vented will make use of the frames rear empty space.

Heres an idea i have, get 1″ OD ali tubing slide that all the way back to the front bushing and have it extend to the point you want the LDC to end at, 4″ infront of barrel. In that tube use a plastic/urethane bushing with holes drilled into it similar to a vented bushing. This goes in front of the barrel, both to let air escape rearward and to protect the crown from the metal mesh (hardware cloth) Wrap hardware cloth around a dowel 5/16″ and use these as baffles. I see these as the same as the hair curlers fund in some Ag LDCs. In your case 1″ and 1.5″ strips should do. Fill to the top of 1″ tubeing spaceing out the wire mesh with felt washer, or urethane bushings. I’d drill the body of the 1″ tube where the 4″Lx2″W LDC will sit. This will help more air escape into the big empty 2″W tube.Then you’ll need a pair of spacers 1″ id to go over the ali tube and the OD will be determined by the 4″x2″ can you slide over the 1″ ali tubing and spacers you installed, some kind of 2″ endcap and you’ll be quiet as a mouse. I don’t see why you couldn’t use 2″od PVC as the end can, as all alignement is determined by the 1″ ali tube. It should look dam sweet being 1″W and then 2″W at the end. Almost 2 LDCs in one. Check out my link if you haven’t, read about the material involved. I did alot of searching yesterday and i can see a setup like this working for you. Tony could whip something like this up if he can work with 2″W round stock. Thing would look like a big bull barrel with a short 2″ ldc on it. Let me know if this was any help.
