Long Range Testing of BSA .25 Barrel.
Finally got to strech the legs on my new .25 BSA 24″ barrel.
Range was 97.5 yards.
Wind about 5-10 mph in gusts.
31 grain H&N Baraccudas at 980 down to 930 fps.

VERY pleased with the barrels performance.
As with any unregulated air rifle, its vital you know how the poi changes as you shoot through. For me, every 4th shot you have to adjust up a little. Keeping count in the field is more easily done by using a pellet holder.
Crown was lovingly done by Lang, very nice it is too 8)
Anyhoo, I know the barrel now and how she shoots. Into the fields today and see how the bunnies like it !!!

I’ve got three bolt action Barnes guns that have orings on the bolt that are lubricated with 3 in 1 oil. Over the last 4 years I have failed to blow up. Gary uses 3 in 1 on all his guns and to date nobody has blown up. I suspect it’s just a matter of time though. 🙄 😆
Just try a little regular oil on that oring and it’ll probably swell to the perfect size.

We do have a restaurant chain here named hooters, but they’re not exactly famous for their chili. I ate there once, have no recollection whatsoever of the food quality. Was too busy calibrating my eyes.

Buna N (nitrile) o rings do swell in oil. They also swell in different types of atmospheres. I’ve seen some come apart when the gases impregnated into the o rings try to come out when subjected to rapid changes in ambient pressure. Look like the o rings shredded from being old or dried; fissures and cracks running longitudinally.
Since oil is petrol based you are asking for trouble by allowing your o ring to absorb some and then flashing pressure at it exceeding 200 atmospheres. The amount may be small enough to let you get away with it, but then again, maybe not.
And, when the oil vaporises and goes away you’d have your original problem back.
Pab, you can’t adjust the feel or tension in the breech sliding by cutting down on the barrel breech. The o rings will only cover a certain amount of stretch, the books say plus or minus around 5% but I’ve found that if you run clearance between the male and female glands over a few thousands, they won’t seal well. Other machinists I’ve talked to have had better luck and say it should be more tolerant than that, but my ears are still ringing from my experiments with same. The o rings I had extruded themselves through as little as 1 thousandth of an inch. I’m not certain why, I triple checked and the groove dimensions were in spec. I’ve since gone to polyurethane o rings, expensive but should cure the problem (have not had time to revisit this).

I think it was on the yellow that a fellow posted an experiment where he soaked orings in oil and photographed them before during and after the soaking and drying. Some of the things looked like donuts for a while!
I suspect that if they are swelling they’re also becoming more fragile. Worth a go though, it’s not going to break the rifle and the rings are cheap enough. 🙂
Don’t take me as an expert as I’m not, but of the three kinds of orings I keep a stash of, all seem to swell a bit in oil. Naturally, all of them are labled as chemical resistant etc. but they all seem to swell to a certain degree.
