Q:

Lubing for a cleaner barrel

I have been searching the forum about lubing pellets for the Cricket. I think that the consensus is just go dry. I think that’s fair, the gun shoots so well with pellets right out of the tin, but my barrel get’s so dirty so fast I thought I’d try an experiment. I thoroughly cleaned the barrel then pulled two Krytech wet patches followed by three dry patches down the barrel. Then I lubed about 100 pellets with Krytech and shot 24 over the Prochrono to season the barrel and check speeds. I went ahead and set the velocity to 910. Twenty-four shots and the Extreme Spread was 16 and the standard Deviation was something like 3…very very good.

Then I shot 6 targets with 5-shot groups each and got very tight groups. But when I went in and pulled a patch it came out very clean…like a quarter of the crud than without lube. Barely anything on it, and certainly no lead flakes. I’m hoping that this isn’t a fluke, which is how a lot of things are when testing air rifles, at least for me…so will shoot some more and recheck the patches. Hoping this will help keep the barrel clean until i send it to Ernest at the end of the season.

Wondering if anyone else has tried this?

I cleaned my 25 yesterday and first patch was dirty but no flakes or loose pieces of lead. Pulled another one and was very clean after the second one. The hird one was almost completely white. That’s after 350 shots. I believe the king pellets are to blame for most of this crappie groups.

What have you found to be wrong with the new Kings ?
I’m assuming it’s the 2015 lot patch you’re questioning ?

Thanks for the heads up GKU. I’ll be looking into the patchworm. More testing to determine barrel center. How would I re-center? Loosen barrel and use alignment tool?

KP

Really hoping that the line I’m using isn’t abrasive to have messed up my crown….ugh!

How to re-center the shroud to the barrel is a tuff subject.
How to alignment of the barrel with the transfer port is another.

This doesn’t look that bad if it was done in some wind.
Maybe some rear bag fighting.
Also try and rest your non dominant hand over the front scope ring to help with the little recoil while shooting.
Shorter BP can be harder to shoot well and get use to then a longrifle.

Post some crony stat numbers and more paper punching pics to analyze, will ya.

Careful with some weedwacker plastic line will contain abrasive ingredients designed into the line by the manufactory to aid in cutting weeds more effectively.
If you must, use fishing line.

I use to use the CrownSaver cleaning system but after cleaning with it the best I could.
Using the PatchWorm system right after, the barrel was still very dirty.

The best IMO is the PatchWorm system that is design for guns with it’s caliber specific cleaning heads and Ballistol only.
Precision Airguns & Supplies – Jim, sold me my first kit years ago.
It will clean well into the grooves and this will help in having to clean as often as much.

If without the shroud on and the shots fell low, I suspect that the tape test will have an off center hole somewhere towards the bottom of the shrouds muzzle.

Thanks for the suggestions…

I checked the crown with a Q-tip. Looks good. I also tried shooting a target with the shroud off and it showed no big difference in grouping. I couldn’t shoot a lot that way…it was Sunday and I thought the loudness would tick neighbors off. i did notice that the POI fell about2-3″ without the shroud. Need to get some masking tape on the way home tonight…will check centering.

I normally clean by pulling flannel patches from breech to muzzle with weedwacker plastic line. A lot of people on the forums use this method. Most times i pull patches dry but with this barrel I use a 50:50 mix of Kano Kroil and Shooters Choice Bore Cleaner, followed by dry patches. Got this off of an airgun tuners sight:

Lots of lead comes out with this stuff…little tiny, sparkly flecks..

This rifle has never been a tack driver. It always seems to throw at least one bad flyer…. at 30 yrds my Marauder produces the same groups…can’t tell the two apart. They are good groups but I was hoping for better groups from the Cricket at just under 4X the price.

Then again there’s talk about bad JSB pellets….so I shot some Benjy Domes….and some poly mag predators…predators shot close to the same and the domes shot worse.

Who knows….might just need to really think on this one. Might shoot again tonight to see if a day makes a difference…..then again, might just box it up and get it to Ernest.

No problem veering off topic…all is good…and cool sidebar stuff.
And I will now do the same…but I should really start a new one for this.
I had said I’d shoot targets at differing velocities this weekend and report. Well, I shot Sat. and Sun. and got so bummed out by the results that I put the Cricket away and got out the Springer.
The Cricket is shooting soooo bad and velocity changes appear to have no effect. Fliers everywhere. Cleaned barrel, no change. I don’t know what’s up. Totally depressing. Not much wind this weekend so can’t really blame it all on that. Maybe I’m suddenly shooting really bad, but I had a pretty decent group at 50 with the springer. I’ll post the speed comparison tonight…I forgot to bring those in today.

How are you cleaning the barrel, what kind of cleaning system are you using ?
Check the crown.

Also check the shroud for clipping and off centering using my tape test.
The Cricket 25 cals have had some issues with this.

I second this check for clipping on the shroud!!!!!!!!!!

Hi GKU,
That’s great service from the company, although I never had to use their customer support. I would buy the electronic trigger again.
I once wrote to Nygord with a few questions long time back and guess what. Don Nygord replied himself with all the answers.

He was my Coach and Mentor when I was in the Nationals and planned to attend the 1996 Olympic in Atlanta.
When he fell short and became ill with Cancer, I lost all hope of perusing the passion.

He is the one that sold me that Morini in the picture I posted.

Are you competing Asad ?

Hi Asad,

Yes I when far beyond ripping Drumsguns tread but it’s often done here out of open mindedness.

I remember the first version with the fixed cylinder and hard to find battery.

I Had a Steyr LP10, I sold it after I got it fixed.
Although a great gun to me it had to many features that over aided the shooters technique.
But yes the Steyr and Morini are both World Class Match Grade Olympic Air Pistols !

Morini (Francisco) some years back sold the Electronic trigger to Steyr to employ in the LP10E I believe.
Morini is a great company they sent me a new frame and seals for free after the one I had developed a crack, this is after 7 years out of warranty !

Are you planning to get the Mechanical or the Electronic trigger ?
Also, have you ever heard or familiar with the late Don Nygord (Nygord Precision Products) ?

Nice video. Reminds me of my Bullseye shooting with Uncle Sam, but at 25 and 50 yards. What does something like those cost? $1500 to $2000??

The Morini CM162EA Electronic Trigger Pistol $1,840.00 now, I bought it for $1,600 about 12 years ago the same gun it never changed.

The Electronic trigger is awesome, it’s so smooth and fast that often times it feels like it fires just before you do.

The IZH-46M (IZZY) I bought about 13 years ago and 10 years before SECoda got his, it was $290 and now it’s about $600.
I’m not sure if he remembers me from back then ?

This is probably off topic but after reading the above post, I just wanted to share my fondness for the Morini. I bought my first real air pistol, the Morini 162E, in 1994 for about $900 just after they first came out. It had many innovative features at the time. It had a fixed cylinder and was the first PCP match pistol (maybe the first PCP of any kind) and pumps for filling them up did not exist. I had easy access to nitrogen cylinders, which is what I used for years. It was also the first electronic trigger air pistol using a hard to get 15v battery.
I sold it years later and got a Steyr LP1. The later Steyr LP10 is the most popular air pistol on the international scene now but I am looking to buy a Morini again.

Nice work Chad.
