Q:

Lubing for a cleaner barrel

I have been searching the forum about lubing pellets for the Cricket. I think that the consensus is just go dry. I think that’s fair, the gun shoots so well with pellets right out of the tin, but my barrel get’s so dirty so fast I thought I’d try an experiment. I thoroughly cleaned the barrel then pulled two Krytech wet patches followed by three dry patches down the barrel. Then I lubed about 100 pellets with Krytech and shot 24 over the Prochrono to season the barrel and check speeds. I went ahead and set the velocity to 910. Twenty-four shots and the Extreme Spread was 16 and the standard Deviation was something like 3…very very good.

Then I shot 6 targets with 5-shot groups each and got very tight groups. But when I went in and pulled a patch it came out very clean…like a quarter of the crud than without lube. Barely anything on it, and certainly no lead flakes. I’m hoping that this isn’t a fluke, which is how a lot of things are when testing air rifles, at least for me…so will shoot some more and recheck the patches. Hoping this will help keep the barrel clean until i send it to Ernest at the end of the season.

Wondering if anyone else has tried this?

I wrote an article about Hornady One Shot, and how clean my Cricket .25 barrel stays. No leading and few cleanings mostly.
I just shot some paper groups to see how my Colibri is for accuracy at 60, 70, and 80 yards with my new scope, and learn my hold overs.
With a barrel that has 2000+ pellets through it, and no cleaning. (Cleaned it before the 2000+ pellets) I’m going to clean it just because, one day here.
If the photos show up. Here’s a few groups I shot this weekend while I was experimenting with different holds and how it affects my accuracy.
I’ve only forced a few nonlubed pellets through my guns. I would lube just to make the pellets feed smooth from the magizine to the chamber.

Good to hear. The Krytech hasn’t had too much an affect on groups at least with the Cricket. I saw a marked improvement with the Condor .25. I got super tight groups with the KalibrGun right out of the box and with JSB’s right out of the tin. I still get the occasional flier so I’m thinking that it needs a barrel lapping. I did the lap with my Marauder and it really helped.

For now my concern is extending the cleaning interval and it is showing promise. I did try using Shooter’s Choice FP-10 but that stuff irritated my skin after a while. The Kryteck is wax dissolved in an organic solvent which dries and seem to place nice with my thumb.
I shot a little more last night and will do so in the coming nights then pull a patch and examine. Hoping to see minimal “dirt.”

One thing I have read though is waxes like Krytech and White Lightning tend to “wear off” over time, so best to lube your pellets and shoot em over a few days.

Don’t over do the wax…too much is not good. I take a sandwich baggie and put about 4 drops in, squeeze out all the air, seal it and then rub the bag flat on a table top to spread the wax evenly inside the bag, then I put 100-150 pellets in and reseal then gently work them around inside for a minute or two. This puts a nice thin coat on them. Repeat until you’ve done the whole tin. Let them sit open in the tin to allow the solvent to evaporate. Doesn’t take too long.

Started lubing my 25 kings and barrel stays clean a long time. No question here.
I use this stuff as per yellow forum member recommendations

I have the same results. I lubed some Polymags for the heck of it with Ballistol, and there wasn’t any degradation in accuracy within the 50 yards I tested. I now just spray a new tin once I open it and don’t worry about it after that. Absolutely makes a difference in how long the barrel remains clean. As a matter of fact, I haven’t cleaned my barrel since I began lubing weeks ago.
Today was beautiful here in SW MIchigan! I sat on the deck for the rest of the afternoon.

I have not tried this. Sounds worth looking into. Thanks for the info.
