Q:

LW Barrels

No one answers the phone and only one guy answers the emails. Does anyone else work there? For the last 4-5 months Woody has been telling me about once every week he will get me a quote. When the time comes he doesn’t respond and than starts all over with the bs again in another week.

Can anyone here get him to make some barrels? I told him I’d take as many as I needed to to make a batch.

Are there any other companies to get barrels from for .25 airguns?

Thanks

Jerry,

I heard back from Walt and this is what he Thougt.
“Not sure about the 1:14 twist, sounds a bit fast for a .25 which normally doesn’t hurt, but these things use soft lead; and a twist rate too fast may strip the round and make it unstable or not as accurate as it should be. I doubt that would happen, but it may be a possibility, just pointing it out.”

Any thoughts ?

Thanks,
Justin

$350 for a 30″ blank. More than I was hoping for one barrel, but better than buying six for $1300 and be stuck with four of them.

assman,

what length are you going with, and what is DL charging?

Walt is busy now, but I think hrs got a good start on a valve. He thought he could get the 7’s into 900fps range with just the 24″.

I think the .630 was for the outside. I’ll see if he can get back to me, and I’ll let him know about the lead.

I think he was also planning on a new breech and and wider breech end of barrel because of the pressure.

The barrel will be 12 weeks out so hopefully I get a couple months before winter.

Thanks for the help

Justin,

If the barrel is made for airgun .25, you’ll probably be OK as we can make slugs from .251 to .253 and that has covered the field so far. The faster twist is theoretically a plus for the longer slugs (think 9 rings) even though the 16″ twist has thus far been sufficient to stabalize the slugs to as far a range as anyone has shot them.

I expect the .630 refers to outside dimension for mounting into the gun and bushings. Assembly of the gun and fitting out is outside my expertise. My comments assume you find a barrel you can install in the gun…

I appreciate the plan to have one tank set for Kodiaks and one for slugs. Considering that you can maximize Kodiak performance with a 18-24″ barrel, I’d give the expensive experiment of a 30″ custom barrel the best chance of success with the slugs by tuning it for that purpose. I’d cut a very slight lede (sized for 7s) into the breech and make sure the transition was smooth. I’d look into a power valve like Blod’s that can deliver high flow for something much more massive than a Kodiak. I’d also look to match the hammer with the spring and valve.

I doubt you can get everything optimized with nothing but a bottle change to go from shooting heavies at best performance to shooting Kodiaks/JSBs at best velocity. I think you can get close (maybe close enough) but the peak performance with both set-ups will probably lie just outside the tuning range of the pre-load wheel…

Jerry,
I don’t know much about this kind of thing. What would I want for exact bore size, or is that standard .25? Also I Remeber Walt saying something about .630? Im planning on having my tanks set one for your sevens and one for kodiaks, but I want your slugs to perform the best.
Thanks,
Justin

I think a 14″ twist will work, maybe better than the standard LW.

Dan Lilja said he could do one with a 14″ twist, does anyone know if that would work?

i believe at one time that mac1 or somebody was offering custom condors with a 28 or 30 inch lilja barrel

Moneyshot,
Just sent him an email.
Thanks

i think dan lilja might be willing to accomodate ya, but i have no idea what he wants…

I only want one, but I told melloroadman if I could, I’d try to get him one as well. So two is all I would need, but depending on the price I could do a minimum order if needed. I can always have them cut down if nobody else wants a longer barrel.

Do you use a BSA? How do they perform with Jerry’s slugs?

Thanks

quote Assman83:

Sure Pabs,

It’s not so much the barrels, there only $125 or something, he’s got over $600 in setup and tools. If you watt see if BSA would do a 30″ or two that would be great, or even see what they would charge you for a minimum order.

Thanks, much appreciated!

How many do you actually want? I can try for that or get a quote on a minimum order.

Assman, do want me to enquire at BSA on some barrels? I’ve bought direct from them before, though not sure if they sell to small fry like me anymore. Worth a try though. Lol, and a lot fuckin’ cheaper than 200 dollars a pop!! 😯
