Matador shroud vent mod=quieter
Ive been shooting my new R3(new reg version) 25 cal Long and cant help but notice the distinct blast of air out of the vent holes.
My R3 22 Long air release is barely felt or heard, but this 25 is blowing hard puff of air and the sound is definitely noticeable(mostly what I hear on shot).
The vent holes are same size on both shrouds as shrouds appear to be same( standard interchangeable part)
I know the 25 is pushing considerably more air and am wondering if slightly larger holes or more would be more efficient to venting additional volume(allowing pellet to leave baffle in a vacuum, increasing accuracy ) as well as larger/more holes not increasing velocity of escaping air(less noise).
After all compensators on PBs get more or bigger holes as caliber/power goes up.
Thoughts anyone?

Dammit Donny. I’m trying to fly under the gaydar here. Quit busting my balls in my thong/boxer.
Now yank that fucking shroud off like a good little ninja soldier and drill baby drill.
Me give up my man card? look who’s talking. You’re sending SEcoda secret love messages in your picture.
Now if I can just convince Ed to make that 9mm pup. 🙂
[/URL]SECoda. Trust me when I say there is no greater satisfaction than working on and modifying these air rifles to your personal fit. Just take your time. I personally love how my grips feels now when carrying and shooting.

Donny. I’m assuming with gun laying in front of you with the buttstock to your left and muzzle to your right with trigger towards your body and scope rail away from you.
Left hand pushing down on scope rail with forearm leaning on stock for leverage. Right hand on wrench pulling towards you. Just give it a good tug. It will come right off no problem. If not give your man card to wife and let her do it. 🙂
Yes…I’m serious. Either heat it up with a hair dryer, or chill it real good in a freezer, causing the metal to expand or contract, that that should break the hold it has.
Once the baffles break loose, and it happens all at once, the rest comes off by hand. Ed really tightens those things down hard!!!
See my PM for further details.

I know what you mean Brant but I went ahead and got the bipod rail on today. turned out great.
Can we get pictures of all of this? It sounds like a hoot. My wrenching and drilling on my $2k guns is normally limited to mounting the Magpul for the bipod and accessories on the forearm and I normally weep and sob during that drilling in the wood. 😥 This stock is so nice I am having second thoughts.
Hoot are you serious or joking… I can never tell with you lol. I sent Neil an email and included your old thread. I want to go with the two piece method. Trying to take off the shroud just in case he wants some kind of measurement. Getting old really sucks! I was pulling with all my might and I think I pulled a pec muscle. My ass muscle failed me too and I let out a fart which my dog inhale while standing in back of me. That’s what he gets for following me everywhere. Had to stop but planning to go at it again tomororw. That barrel is not going to bend easily right? I have the gun laying flat on the side, one hand pushing down on the scope rail and barrel while the other pulling counter clockwise on the baffle nut.
Get your wife’s hair dryer out and heat that bitch up real good!!! Then grab ‘er tight and put the squeeze on that sucker…

If she still resists, hit her with a crescent wrench! Things will loosen up after that…oh yeah!
Yes on 22. Drill out front stripper holes and enlarge existng rear holes to recommended size. My 22 became very quiet at 31fpe. Since doing 22 shroud mod I then retuned 22 to 20fpe and it is crazy quiet now.
I don’t feel you need second row on 22 as on 25.
lol tru tru, forgot about him.
Tony – why don’t you zip up there. 😆
Funny you posted this Streitwise, I just took a break from trying to unscrew the baffle. That thing is on tight! I know in Ed’s video he uses a vise to clamp the barrel and then use a wrench but in my case, I am trying to take it off without separating it from the air tube. Not experience enough to do that yet. Anyone around Orlando Florida with a Russian wrench?
Stock stripper 14 holes at 5/64″ each. Plenty of room to open up to 3/32″ so out comes the drill and I open up half of them.
Plenty of room still so all holes get opened. By some quick calculations close to a 50% increase in hole volume.

Shot for a bit and yes,it’s quieter now. Muzzle blast is a lot closer to what I remember the unmodified 22 was like.
50yd group ,one big ragged hole much smaller than a dime.
I have read everything on this web site regarding modifications to a Matador to quiet them down. Most of it focuses on .25 cal. and i was wondering if it was worth it for a .22. I have a Matador long in .22 shooting JSB 18 at 935 fps and would like to make it quieter. From what I can tell from your posts, if I just open up the existing holes on the existing shroud and stripper that should do it. Will adding a pad in the shroud make much of an improvement for a .22? Will the overall sound reduction be noticeable in a .22? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Happy hunting!
