Q:

Matador shroud vent mod=quieter

Ive been shooting my new R3(new reg version) 25 cal Long and cant help but notice the distinct blast of air out of the vent holes.
My R3 22 Long air release is barely felt or heard, but this 25 is blowing hard puff of air and the sound is definitely noticeable(mostly what I hear on shot).
The vent holes are same size on both shrouds as shrouds appear to be same( standard interchangeable part)
I know the 25 is pushing considerably more air and am wondering if slightly larger holes or more would be more efficient to venting additional volume(allowing pellet to leave baffle in a vacuum, increasing accuracy ) as well as larger/more holes not increasing velocity of escaping air(less noise).
After all compensators on PBs get more or bigger holes as caliber/power goes up.
Thoughts anyone?

TTSTS – The Truck Sniper from Toad Suck !

I can find no difference in accuracy when venting the shroud. Kalibr really needs to add this mod to their specs, as it does make a real difference in sound. Six holes do it for me, at about 5//64th diameter. I started with 1.5mm, but found bigger is better (to a point…too big reverses the sound savings)

Gun is crazy accurate!

I wish the price would come down. I’d buy the Shortie for truck use!

The rear shroud holes are more than adequate now I believe and in order to pass more air the front stripper holes would need to be looked at to feed them.
Stock stripper 14 holes at 5/64″ each. Plenty of room to open up to 3/32″ so out comes the drill and I open up half of them.

Plenty of room still so all holes get opened. By some quick calculations close to a 50% increase in hole volume.

Shot for a bit and yes,it’s quieter now. Muzzle blast is a lot closer to what I remember the unmodified 22 was like.
50yd group ,one big ragged hole much smaller than a dime.

I was more happy with the first 10 shot group and its 6 hole cluster.

I like that 7-shot group.

Got up early before day on lavender farm starts and got in a few shots while breeze was small
1-2mph steady lt-rt slight qtr. 100yds. Off bipod, prone hunting style.

Yep. Too big holes are never good. On anything. 😯

I am weak. 😥 I just can’t get myself to drill on the metal of my 2k air gun. 😯

Looks like you were heading for a 3rd row of holes.

Yo! SECoda….

If you botch up a hole, you can fill it with epoxy putty and dab some flat black paint on the outside to cover it up…or even dab it with a black permanent marker pen.

Otherwise, simply start with a small, very small drill bit, perhaps 1.5 to 2.0mm, and use a brand new one. Drill slowly to start. Use a punch to indent a tiny hole for the bit to grab. This indent will keep the drill bit from “walking” across the curved surface of the shroud. Once you have the first hole in, the rest are easy…just remember, take your time!!!

I wrapped two pieces of masking tape around the shroud, with a 2.0mm space between them. I calculated how far apart the holes should be, and dabbed a bit of black permanent marker at the site of each hole. Then I tapped it lightly with a punch, the rest was easy. GO SLOW!

If you use the tape to keep the holes in a perfect circle, dots to show where to start each hole, punch a tiny indent for each hole, it becomes very easy to do a great job. Start the drill very very slowly, and don’t press hard during the drilling. Let the bit do the work.

Of course, with an Edgun, you can just enlarge the existing holes. Cricket and Marauder owners have to do it the slow way.

Just don’t over do it! Too big of a hole and it can get noisy.

Thanks for following MilDot. I recommend going another row or at least to 3/32″ holes. The scotchbrite slows down air and bigger or more holes help keep it movng out.
The whole point of front baffle and vents is to vent air backwards so pellet leaves barrel with no air turbulence around it. The more air we quickly bleed off the better the pellets chances of leaving barrel undisturbed.

Ok I have been following this topic and decided to go ahead and do it to my .25 R3 standard. So I pulled the shroud off and drilled the original holes out to 5/64 and put the scotchbrite pad in and all I can here now is the hammer strike. I just had to try it out in field conditions so I went to a friends ranch and the accuracy is still excellent I was
Taking Squirrels from 75 to 98 yards with no problem. My 25 is set up at 890 fps with 26 gr preds. I my opinion this mod is a good one and does not change accuracy and only took 20 min to compleate.

I’ll be back at farm this weekend. Hopefully the wind has died down around here enough to shoot as 100.
I’ll post groups for you.

I trust your findings and just want to see the matching 100 yard accuracy before I drill mine:)

JDR, if you look at my post regarding mil dot ladder run you’ll see what I normally shoot group wise out to 100, I’ve shot tighter but that’s solid average group(my hunting kill zone).I count my largest groups as my averages so I know thats the worst I’ll do scoring wise during competitions. I rarely ever see a non wind situation and I don’t shoot off a lock down rest where I barely touch gun. I also shoot non sorted pellets now as I have found the time and effort involved in sorting , sizing has not resulted in any significant decrease in overall group size on a regular basis. I’ve shot over 40k pellets through these guns over last yr(30k through 22 and 10k in 25 over last few months). The 22 is easier to shoot as it has quite a bit less kick on shot so follow through is better yet 100yd groups are virtually identical overall. Odd but interesting.
I’ll keep posting results but don’t expect the dime size groups as a standard at 100 in hurricane conditions like most Internet snipers do 🙂

The Predators work great in both my matadors. Very accurate. Tested expansion of 22 and 25 on a piece of ham both at 885 fps. 22 will still get full expansion out to 50 and 25 still good out to 85ish. POI practically identical to JSB 18s 22s and 25.4-25 cal for hunting.

I would like to hear your post modification 100 yard report when you get a chance.

Thanks,
