Modified Etac-Reg

Well because my new lathe is a little late on showing up I figured I would make another etac-reg with a collar for more volume. Can’t make what I will make until the new lathe shows up in the next couple of weeks. I made this one about .187 wider to see how much difference it makes. All I know is that my new .22 condor I built shoots kodiaks in the 970’s with a standard etac-reg and 2500 psi reg. With modified etac-reg and 2000 psi reg it shoots in the mid 960’s to low 970’s. I have the 2000 on a 53 ci tank and the 2500 on a 62 ci tank. I get more shots with the 2000 reg on the 53ci tank. I will pressure test this one to 4500 psi in a bucket of water after I weld it together tomorrow. It is .180 on the top and the sides are .140 thick. The most it will see is 2500 psi and I don’t think I will need more than my 2300 psi to get the .25 kodiaks to 950 fps or so. Going to go down to 1800 psi for the .22 I think.

You are correct, soldering wouldn’t hold at those pressures. However, he appears to know his way around a welding torch, or knows someone that does.

Not sure what you are trying to do? Etac-reg works just fine. If your going to be leased to a bottle you only need your tank reg feeding a regular etac. Look at the shot string above and you can see it is pretty hard to get anymore consistant than that.

Yes I have used helium. I have made 233 fpe with the .25. If I was to put it in the setup that shoots 167 fpe with air I’m sure it would make 260-270 fpe. I have also used it in my .308 and it made 414 fpe.

Do you shoot the helium? I think I saw a cheap tank the other day and I have a booster here that has been begging me for years to be put to use. hmmm

I was thinking of gutting the regulator completely I guess. Didn’t think that leaving the stem in would lock it up but I guess it would.

Also didn’t see a burst disk post regulator (not visible in pic?)

Anyway those are some awesome results. I was thinking after I posted that you may be right. If shot count is the only improvement with the larger regulated chamber then it isn’t economical to do this mod for money.

After all regulators are cheap and with a 4.5k CF tank reasonable shot count can be achieved.

I will have to get all this crap hooked up and do some shooting till I find the pressure and pellet combo that works for me on my .25 cal condor.

Couple of ideas. You could add a burst disc to your added volume chamber. Rule of thumb is the burst disc should be ~ 2x pressure (e.g. 7.5 k for a 4.5k tank 1.8k for 900 psi output . . .) I don’t remember what the threading is but you have several there on your regs!

Also why not strip a reg of the spring stack and use a tank as a pass through for regulated pressure coming from something like this:

You could run the pressure from an SCBA bottle to a paintball bottle into your gun. Then instead of monkeying around with changing reg pressures you could just get the pellets, barrel, hammer etc. where you want them and then shoot till you got the strings you were looking for. Set your reg when you are done and put it all together for a final test.

PM me if you want to talk about a trade. I would be more than happy to loan you the equiment and my .25 cal condor. I have a reg like the one pictured and several cf bottles etc. here. Am planning on getting it all set up so I can tune my condor anyway. Would love an expanded etac reg (just have a stock etac reg set up here).

Man, I just wanted to say that the creativity that has evolved over the short time I have been a member here is absolutely amazing!!! So many talented craftsmen gathered in such a small arena. Keep up the good work to all who dedicate their time and talent to this amazing rifle we all hold dear!

The collars are increasing the volume a lot. Don’t know how much but the first one I made probably made the camber 3 times bigger. I shot .25 JSB’s in the 935 fps area with 2000 psi reg. Made the next one not quite twice as big and a 1800 psi reg was shooting JSB’s in the 960’s now. The one I did this string on was even a little bigger. I haven’t check to see what size stops improving. I think with the smaller regs I have matched the same pressure without reg. If I get time I will stick my 2500 psi reg in the large one and see what it does.

maybe just a simple thought.
an paintball botle with etac-reg straight.
on top of that a e-tac angled adapter.
this would add a bit of volume (don’t know if it would be enough)
and the lenght of pull would just be a tiny bit more than a bottle with quickfill.
dit anyone try this?

that condor does wear me out keeping it in tight strings, it’s allot of work, but i dont try to keep it tightest unless i am doing paper work, and really this is the only time that i need it that close.well maybe not , the impact movement is frustrating thru the curve even with 30 shots, hell i have to stay with 10 shots to keep the tightest string. 🙁

A normal Talon/Condor tank is 30 ci right? 500cc…?

PB, now you see why I keep pushing the reg? 😉 I bet you could get 150 shots at 900fps with a 17 caliber 24″ barrel with a Talon valve with a really low spread too… 😀

Man that looks pretty sweet, it seems your getting higher fps out of a lower psi than with a stock set up?
