Modified Etac-Reg

Well because my new lathe is a little late on showing up I figured I would make another etac-reg with a collar for more volume. Can’t make what I will make until the new lathe shows up in the next couple of weeks. I made this one about .187 wider to see how much difference it makes. All I know is that my new .22 condor I built shoots kodiaks in the 970’s with a standard etac-reg and 2500 psi reg. With modified etac-reg and 2000 psi reg it shoots in the mid 960’s to low 970’s. I have the 2000 on a 53 ci tank and the 2500 on a 62 ci tank. I get more shots with the 2000 reg on the 53ci tank. I will pressure test this one to 4500 psi in a bucket of water after I weld it together tomorrow. It is .180 on the top and the sides are .140 thick. The most it will see is 2500 psi and I don’t think I will need more than my 2300 psi to get the .25 kodiaks to 950 fps or so. Going to go down to 1800 psi for the .22 I think.

Did a shot string to see how many shots I would get with my 1500 psi reg setup and 62 ci tank. Reg has settled in since I first shimmed it to 1500 psi. If it wasn’t for the first shot spike I would have only had a 10 fps difference in 135 shots.

Seems like 907 is a popular number. Shot 136 was 899 fps. I took the Etac-Reg off the tank and put on my adapters to check reg pressure. It was right there at 1480 to 1500 psi depending on how long I let it set. If I let it set for a miniute it would creep up to 1530 psi.

Thanks. I still have one to finish. I was going to make them all the same size but everytime I made one I went a little bigger. The large assembled one will end up with a 4500 psi to 2800 psi and a 4500 psi tank. I think I can make a setup that will produce 25-30 regulated 100 fpe shots.

I think there is a lathe attachment for grinding automotive valve stems and that would work great to radius the weld area for a smooth finish.

I took one up to around 4300 psi. The last one I made only has 1530 psi in it. They are .160″ thick on all sides and the weld just keeps it in place and seals it.

Do you pressure test these after weld up ?

Here’s 2 more that are a little bigger yet.

Built another one slightly larger and reshimed a reg. Didn’t have anymore thin shims so the best I could do was 1530 psi. On .25 it shot JSB’s around 936 fps. In .22 it shot kodiac’s around 955 fps and JSB’s around 985 fps. I’m thinking 1100 or 1200 psi reg to get the JSB’s down to around 920 fps and 1400psi for .25.

Did some more testing today and the reg has settled in. I retested it and it is under 1800 psi. If you let it set for 20 seconds it creeps up to 1805 psi. Starts climbing around 1775 psi slowly. Can’t figure why it is doing it. That is why my first shot is 975 fps and the next one 958 fps. It seems to shoot in the 955 fps + or – a couple fps.

I ran a quick program on what the minimum volume would be in the area between the regulator and valve to react as if the regulator was not even there and it came to .78 cc. (or I’m off by a decimal).
Curious if you ever get a chance to determine your new available volume ?

Correct and that is what I have been trying to do. Get the fps as close to the same with reg psi compared to same psi with no reg.

BUT from you have demonstated with your VE-TaC, is that the E-TaC reduces the available volume available per shot, where an un-regulated tank would actually give more volume per shot ? Yes ?
Said another way, if a tank is filled at 2500 psi and a 2500 psi regulator is used then the regulated shot is lower, more like a 2300 fill, because of lack of volume in the TaC and the reaction time of the regulator.

There is only one Etac-Reg. There is a short Etac and a long. With short you can’t take the tank off with out removing the gauge and fill nipple unless you cut off machine off the back of your gun to clear. Long makes it possible to remove your tank.

Is there more volume in the longer etac vs the shorter on?
