My Matador R5 just landed…
Yes. Title says it all. My R5 in .30 cal just landed safely in my hands. I always wanted to go high-power but so far the choice was pretty limited here in EU. Please don’t tell me one brand or another… after owning several PCPs from several manufacturers I simply wanted an EdGun, period! And short R5 (officially named as Standard) seems to be my ‚dream come true’ .30 high power airgun. Well… so far I’m delighted. I’ll play with her a bit in coming days, try couple of pellets, try another 1 or 2 scopes, and (of course) you can expect some photos in this thread soon. And after some time maybe also a review? Who knows… but for now quick and dirty ‚unboxing’ kind of picture of my R5 on my desk. Yeah!
My first scope of choice is Vortex Diamondback Tactical 3-9×40, which is lightweight, compact, good glass, good reticle and very good target turrets. So it fits my small R5 perfectly. Parallax is set at 100m… and well, that’s exactly what I need. It’s not a backyard gun after all! 100m seems to be just right for that sniping machine. Can’t wait to try her out…
It’s a beast! The most beautiful beast I’ve ever handled! And it handles amazingly well!

Small change, but still… slightly changed scope mount height, it’s now a bit lower and even more comfortable to shoot for me.

Your pictures are all very similar to each other. Focus on a gun in the center and all the rest blurred out. Push your limits.

Airguns, like anything else, are subject to personal judgement. But for me that R5 looks just amazing. I like that ‘gun look’ muscular aesthetics a lot, can’t hide it. And it’s so shootable as well. What about one more pic from me:

No, didn’t try. The original plenum is just too small for 125bar and .30 cal in short barrel. It could work in Long or Extra Long, but the short one requires serious kick to push that pellet to adequate speed.

So I just got done zeroing my scope today in freezing weather, refilled the bird feeder noting it was empty, and this evening decided to check on the feeder before sundown. I took my Matador and one pellet in my pocket and walked around the side of my house to see if there was any activity at the feeder. Sure enough, a squirrel was perched on top, going to town on the bird seed.
I was approximately 40 yards away when I saw it and slowly closed the distance, keeping trees in between me and the line of sight of the squirrel. I made it to just about 35 yards away and fully expected the squirrel to dart in the woods. But it just kept on eating, paying me no mind. I loaded up a 50 grain pellet in the chamber, fumbled around with my scope cam and got it turned on, and checked again to see if the squirrel was still there. It felt like an eternity. I did not have my usual bipod with me so I braced my forearm against a tree and laid my rifle on my arm for support while standing.
What happens next is seen below in the video.
This gun is devastating. There was no propeller tail, no flopping around. It just died where it landed. The pressure from the energy delivered to the head made the eyeball almost pop out.
dr_beretta, very nice… looks like a good shooting place! And that’s exactly how I mounted my bipod rail too.
Pablito, as I said earlier in my post – it’s been tuned internally and also with selected/weighted ammo, etc. so it’s not out of the box. But best results are never ‘out of the box’ and that applies to almost anything incl. firearms, cars, guitars (I could tell something about that as well) etc. Out of the box the diameter of groups was within 40mm. Off the sandbags of course.
Are those 100 meters groups?
If yes then I think there is nothing to complain about.
Waiting to see who will be the first to speak about a power tune or is this gun actually already power tuned?
Would have preferred to see the potential of the “out of the box” gun.
