Q:

My Matador R5 just landed…

Yes. Title says it all. My R5 in .30 cal just landed safely in my hands. I always wanted to go high-power but so far the choice was pretty limited here in EU. Please don’t tell me one brand or another… after owning several PCPs from several manufacturers I simply wanted an EdGun, period! And short R5 (officially named as Standard) seems to be my ‚dream come true’ .30 high power airgun. Well… so far I’m delighted. I’ll play with her a bit in coming days, try couple of pellets, try another 1 or 2 scopes, and (of course) you can expect some photos in this thread soon. And after some time maybe also a review? Who knows… but for now quick and dirty ‚unboxing’ kind of picture of my R5 on my desk. Yeah!

My first scope of choice is Vortex Diamondback Tactical 3-9×40, which is lightweight, compact, good glass, good reticle and very good target turrets. So it fits my small R5 perfectly. Parallax is set at 100m… and well, that’s exactly what I need. It’s not a backyard gun after all! 100m seems to be just right for that sniping machine. Can’t wait to try her out…

It’s a beast! The most beautiful beast I’ve ever handled! And it handles amazingly well!

Looking at the pictures, PiterM may be under pressure now.

My R5 .30 came in yesterday from EDgun West and just had a chance to get a weaver rail installed last night along with getting it scoped. Still haven’t shot it yet due to inclement weather overnight with zero degree Fahrenheit windchill this morning and snow in South Mississippi. My pressure dropped from 230 bar to 207 bar in 15 minutes just photographing the gun.

This is the Matador R5 Standard at 29.5″ long, set up at 880 fps using 44.75g pellets. It’s wearing a Hawke 4-16×44 AO SF scope on medium rings. I added a Magpul L7 rail underneath.

Here is what the Magpul L7 Weaver rail looks like.
The included bolts were too short and flush with the inside of the wood, so I put in longer phillips bolts in order to get everything tightened down. The included metal pads that are supposed to hold everything together have threads for the original bolts so I had to use a drillbit and drill out the threads to allow the new bolts to slip through and screw into the hex nuts. Everything is solid and there is no flex.

OK… there is time for photos, time for tuning, but also time for actual shooting. And last days was mainly shooting for me. As I mentioned I upgraded in couple of areas, and each one brought positive effect in the end. First of all I selected my pellets – both visually and also weighted them all. And the weighted / selected pellets were put into full-foam lined container to avoid any damage. And of course upgraded my scope from Vortex 3-9×40 Tactical (very good glass) to 6-24x Viper HST, which changed a lot! And last but not least I also built way more solid shooting stand out of sand bags (added side bags to stabilise R5 side-to-side). So I tried to eliminate any variable factor I was able to. And here’s my stand now:

And the results.

That ‘opened’ group on the right is 31mm edge-to-edge (24mm c-t-c) and the tightest group was just above 21mm edge-to-edge (so about 14mm c-t-c). So even if we exclude that crazy tight group of the day as “the lucky one” (it must have been a lucky group, I’m not that good… but it’s still there) that R5 with good scope and selected/weighted pellet can potencially group pellets at hair below 1″ at 100m (which is 109 yards to be exact). Off the sandbags of course.

I think it’s all I need in .30 cal airgun. Now what I DO NEED is even more range time and more pellets through my Matador. MOA is good enough for me.

And last but not least – field picture for you, winter came here, finally!

Cheers!

of course I use Adobe software… anyone seriously involved in photography does. But it’s used to enhance photos, not fake grain lines. I’d have to be photoshop wizard to fake same lines in the same way in so many different pictures, angles, etc. Lol!

Piter, I’m using old Adobe software on old Macs, to avoid the high cost of monthly subscriptions. However, I’ve heard very good reports about Affinity, both for Vector and Raster imaging.

The cost is great, a one-time fee. I’ll be checking it out to see how it compares.

IDK if this has what you folks need, but I like free stuff … so thought to share.

I wish all R5s were looking and shooting like yours, that would make many happy owners :8:

IMHO in the single shot segment edgun is still one of the strongest competitors.

It’s in the multishot versions where it falls far behind.

Maybe and hopefully the newer multishot versions will work better and you get what you paid for :8:

Yeah, that’s the shortes one.

Nice picture!

Even though from this perspective the R5 looks bulky.

Your’s the shortest version, right?

Come on Piotr!

Please send us some mouthwatering pictures of airguns and leave daddy alone.

I really do like your photoshop processed airgun pictures, they are really gorgeous and so sexy!

Please just avoid pictures that could cause unpleasant homophobic reactions.

But let’s stay on topic, let’s speak about airguns.

The .30 cal R5 must be the Big Mac, the big bore Mac :8:

Sorry folks, I got this wrong, can’t be….

The Big Mac is not a Limited Edition.

Have you ever seen a burger like that in McDonald’s?

Yes Sir!

In the pictures of the menu :8:

They not only look good, they taste also delicious, that’s what Mr McDonalds and his fellow employees say.
