Tried my hand at making a vid. I hear the mill, aircompressor and haven’t a clue what the other noise is.

I was flyfishing last weekend with my son on Hot Creek in Mammoth CA.
I was using an 8.5′ Hollow built bamboo fly rod I made. Had a great time catching 16-18″ Rainbow on size 22 female tricos.
I did not bring a camera this time but this is what it looks like.
This is a shot of a 7 1/2 rod I made. Wrapped in silk and with a nickel silver ferrule I made.

I have seen and used many custom fly rods in my time, and have thought about trying to build a bamboo but figured I just wouldn’t have the patience to do it right. if I did make one I’d be way too scared to take it to the river just like the saint croix I had built when I was working in the fly shop up in truckee, the only time I take thatone out of it’s case is for lake fishing and a belly boat which I no longer have 😥
i do abit of fishing myself from time to time but no fancy rods just a fibre glass telescopic rod and a cheap spining reel, still good enough to catch my dinner though, cool american accent WOK

Be impressed then 😛 I have been hand crafting bamboo flyrods for several years….self taught.
I buy imported 12ft Tonkin Can poles from China. I have them shipped to my home where I cut them and split them into 24 pieces. I choose a taper for the flyrod I want or create my own and then hand plane them to spec after cutting and pressing nodes.
I make my own bamboo mills and rod wrapping machines etc. I wrap with silk and dip the entire rod to apply the spar finish. I have written many tips and articles on bamboo rod making over the years. Takes about 40 hours to make a rod from start to finish.
I also make my own nickel silver ferrules and reel seats.

Hexcane stands for the 6 pieces of a bamboo flyrod. I handcraft bamboo cane flyrods. It takes 6 pieces of Tonkin bamboo hand planed down to a taper and glued together to make a hexcane bamboo flyrod.

If you hand make those bamboo rod blanks yourself I am truly impressed. I made quite a few fishing poles, but always bought the blanks, ready to install handles, wrap the eyes, and finish. Had an 8 1/2ft bamboo 3wt which I loved to trout fish with. much better feel than glass or graphite rods.

oh yeah 😀 i can tie a fly like u read about< lol, that was a nice fish, never caught one that big, looks beatiful where you fish my spot is a brook so i mainly catch brookies, they are good eats
