My R3 25 Long

I have learned to write my posts in Windows document first. It’s spell check is my friend! I was worried about my long post but, I figured that since the mods let me on here WTF, I can ramble along just as long as I want to! 😆

And Kazzz, you don’t have to worry about the reg mods. You have a 22 and you don’t need to adjust it.

It is just the 25’s that, in my opinion, need to have the reg turned down.

Please try the trigger screw and the cocking probe plate mods and let me know what you think. I don’t like to do any Edgun mods that are not reversible. The stock trigger screw can be put back in and the plate can be turned over with a fresh side.

Mark6869, I ordered it 1-11-2011. Yes the shroud is 2 piece. The front part is just a tube that screws onto the mounting nut. The front part of the mounting nut has the shroud’s baffles attached to it. That nut is REALLY tight! I tried taking it off and could not move it! I sent Ed an email asking if it was reverse threads or if it was epoxied on. He sent me this link showing him removing and installing it.

Kazzz, You don’t have to reread the post another 25 billion times. I don’t remember if Mam or I ever posted about the trigger mod or the beveled plate mod. I have slept since then and as long as I can avoid the long dirt nap, it’s all good!

While waiting for the R3, I kept telling myself that I would keep it stock; I wasn’t going to do any mods. That lasted for about an hour after I got the gun! I put it on my chrony and the speed was 950 fps!

I turned the hammer spring tensioner screw (I am making a new rule here: the hammer spring tensioner screw will now forever be called HS and we will all know what everybody is talking about) out enough to get the speed down to 890. I had planned on taking the day off when my R3 came in. It was windy as hell so, I then went to work. I work 2nd shift.

I went in to work early Sat and got off at 4PM. Came home and did the trigger and cocking probe mods. Put 2 90 duro O rings on the probe as it was leaaking a little. About an hour before dark, the 30+ mph winds died down. I went to the range. I finally got the gun sighted in at 50 yards, kinda. The groups were not good. I tried shooting at 100 yards and, the POI was 1 mil dot higher than where it should be. WTF? After a couple of groups, it was too dark to continue shooting. I was not happy with the 100 yard groups. At all!

This morning the winds weren’t too bad, went to the range again. Put the gun on the chrony, it still had a half full charge, 975 fps, again WTF? Through the past darkly, (any of you old hippies out there remember that album?) I remembered that I couldn’t just turn the HS down on the R2.5 either, I needed to turn the regulator down also.

Funny side note here: On Sunday mornings, the range always has a bunch of powder burners there. They shoot a couple of shots and then get up and walk around wanting to talk to other gun nuts. On Sundays the range closes from noon till 5. They shoot trap just behind the rifle range.

The PB guys usually just annoy me. I have a limited amount of time there, I don’t want to waste it talking and I have to wear ear plugs because of their noise! When I sat the R3 up, all of the guys came over asking if that was a new gun? Told them that I just got it this Friday. A couple of them said that the walnut stock was just beautiful. One of them asked what I was going to seal it with? I told him that I was going to lightly sand it and then seal it with 3 or 4 light coats of Rustoleum black truck bed liner. They couldn’t believe it. One guy told me that his $5000 custom built rifle didn’t have a stock that looked that good. I told him that I asked for a black stock and that Edguns are supposed to be black! Never mind!

They all think that I am crazy for spending $2000 for a “pellet gun”, at least till they see the 100 yard groups that beat 90+% of theirs! 😆

When the range closed, I went home and turned the regulator down. I went back around 5 PM. I took the R3 and the R2.5 that needed sighted in again. It was still a little breezy and the 50 yard groups weren’t too good. Shooting the guns back to back, the R3 still needs a little more trigger work. The HS is still too high and it makes the final break higher than the R2.5’s break. The R3’s fps now starts at 885 for about 20 shots then slowly climbs to the mid 890s for another 20 or so shots and then climbs up to 917 before going off of the regulator. I need to turn the reg down just a little more.

It was starting to get dark and the winds had almost died down. I tried 100 yard groups and came up with this. The coins are quarters and measure .954″ or 24.23 mm.

For the final tie breaker, I set up 10, 12 ga shotgun shells at 100 yards. The R3 went 1st, it took me 7 shots to hit 5. With the R2.5, I was use to the R3’s trigger and skanked the first shot. The R2.5’s trigger lets off easier. I settled down and then went 5 for 5.

I thought that the R3 didn’t shoot as well as my R2.5 with the BSA barrel. Today proved different, at least on paper.

The thing about my 2.5 is that, no matter what the 100 yard groups looked like, it always seemed to be able to hit a ground squirrels head at 100+ yards. Right now, I trust the 2.5 more and I will take it GS shooting for the rest of the season unless, turning the reg down more wakes the 3 up.

It is almost the end of the GS shooting season. I wish that the R3 would have come in around July or August. I would have had enough time to get it sorted out before the last minute. It ain’t easy being sleazy!

It just occurred to me that the forum members that are not in the US don’t know about the Chester Cheetah cheese curl commercials!

Out of the box, thr R2.5 never shot a well as the R3 is shooting now. So far, it looks like it is an inprovement. I guess that I will pillar mount the R3 and I need to call Leupy and see if he can turn a BSA barrel down to fit the R3. So much for not moding the R3! I think that I need help! 😆
