Need Help, Removing Valve from AF tank.
I’m going to fly down to Lima, Peru tomorrow to see some family, and I want to take my brother some AF parts for a little crazy experiment we’re working on.
Long story short, in order to get this tank on the plane, I need to remove the valve so the poor TSA employees can see inside it.
I’ve rigged up something that will work, but its not a tool by any stretch. Given the extreme forces I will be exerting on this thing, I have a question:
Which way do I turn the collar/valve assembly? Imagine I have the tank in between my legs, valve pointing out ahead of me.

Also he said he had the tank pointed valve away from him with it in between his knees, so he would want to turn the valve to the right in this position to loosen it.
If tank was pointing straight at your face valve first turn valve to left to loosen.???
Ok, I drilled a few holes in a metal blank and got the valve off quite easily!
The only problem, there is some kind of brass part still in there, not letting me see through to tank!

You would unscrew the brass part under the top hat as a whole assembly.

By pry off, you mean use blunt forge to leverage the top hat off?
Just disassemble the valve guts rather than remove the entire valve assembly.
Pry out the tophat / stem.
Unsrew the brass retainer that is behind the tophat.
Drop the delrin valve head and spring out into your hand.
The airport people can now drop a pencil into your tank’s empty valve orifice.
Just make sure the leverage thing is flipped to the other

My googling said that there are to be no intact compressed gas cylinders allowed on planes. Checked or carry-on seem to be treated the same.
Shipping items to Peru is a crap shoot, its still the wild west down there with a lot of things. If the border people like what they see, they can make it disappear, if it does get through, it takes a week or two to clear customs and you have to pay at least 35% of its value in taxes on top of shipping.
Worst Case scenario: I’ll have to drill a hole into the tank, worry about getting the valve off on the flip side.

I had some 1/4 plywood and some irwin quickgrips.
I’ve bent off two steel 7 mm rods on the collar hole already, tank loots plenty worse for wear.
I’m in a tiny one bedroom in new york, neighbors have all pleaded me to stop banging and dremeling.

Don’t let it beat you, try to take anleather belt and wrap it around the tank a couPle times with some left use the extra and gain some leverage
Figure it out, you can do it
If not, box that bitch up and ship it via ups of fed ex, tell them it is a pePper grinder, not an issue if it is empry

That’s got to be one of those 10,000 psi tanks with a spring retainer nut hole so small.
Alien technology, I would say.
