NEI Molds
A warning for people that buy molds and cast. Do not buy a mold from NEI.
Purchased a .257-75gr 4 whole mold. Shows up so I try it out. Cast about 200 bullets and no matter what I did I couldn’t get them to come out usable. Base of bullet was egged shaped or out of round. I did notice that the pour holes were not in the center and on one the mold was sticking in to the hole. Then I weighed one and with pure lead it was 74.8 gr. I ordered a 75 to get a 80 something. Suppose to be 8% more for pure lead.
So I send it back and turns out he recut me a new mold and shipped it out. Shows up and first thing I notice is all 4 holes are showing mold in them. Wasn’t going to even waste my time and just send it back but I had to try it.
Same results as first time. But this time they weigh 81-82 gr.
So I put it back in the mail and ask for a refund.

It is just that ferrel cats are a invasive species and should be shot everytime one is seen, however misinformed animal lovers protect them and in turn lead to increases in their numbers.
Responsible cat owners keep their cats in their houses where they belong.
But don’t mind me, I am just a opinionated crabby old man with a beautiful wife.

Cats have a very nasty parasite that is killing off the river otters in the PNW, cat feces from outside and ferrel cats are running into the rivers thru run off rain.
All cats have it at one time or another, and it is suspected that it leads to higher rates of suicide in women who own cats as it affect the personallity.
It is called toxoplasma gondii and more and more harmful effects are being learned about it.
And it is just one more thing cat lovers are in denial about.

We had a lot of cats in the field when I was a kid Gary, those wonderful people from town, you know the cat lovers, would drop the filthy bastards off on our property because they figgured we would take them in.
My mom would feed them if they came to th house, and when she got too many of them, then she would poisen them in mass.
Now 50 years later, those same type of people still drop off the cats they “loved” until they were not cute kitten anymore and they come up here and smell the place up.
And really Gary, I don’t give a rats ass if you approve or not of where and when I shoot the filthy bastards.

First let me say I have little problem with you shooting the cat. It was on the range/property therefore fair game.
What is a cat good for?
Our cat is like a child for us. I do not know if you have ever had a cat as a house pet. They are very good companions when brought up right. Our girl is more like a dog than a normal cat. She will meet us at the door when we get home from work. She also listens to us when we tell her to or not to do something.
We also use to have a male cat (don’t forget my wife is a housekeeper and we live on the property) that would know what time my wife comes home and would escort her home and then he would either go about his buisness or come up and be with us.
Just an FYI.
and yes we have a shit box in the house. Dont forget though babies and children shit in diapers and have to be picked up after aswell. 😉
The fartherest I can shoot on the property here is 285 yards to that big steel target I shoot at. The bench sits right at the edge of the property line and the 3×4′ steel target is at the other side of the property. There is a 15% incline so I get a good workout painting and power walking back up the hill.
I am having another smaller steel target made up that is 24 x 18 inches, with two 2 inch x 12 inch pipe nipple cups welded to the back so I can set it on two “t” posts and move it from one location to another where I have “T” post set up.
I can get it out to 80 yards simply by swiveling the shooting bench and shooting down one of the grape rows.
And 80 yards is one of the most common ranges I shoot at and have most of my rifles sighted in for 80 yards, reason being is the crows like to land in a tree that is 80 yards from my bedroom window in the spring and early summer mornings when the young stupid one are just getting out. The FX Royale 500 Carbine with Kings is just deadly out that window.
On the edges of the new target, I am having angle iron welded up to act as catch basins to catch the lead spatter, that way I can recast it. If that works, I will take the 36×48 inch steel target to the welding shop and have angle iron welded to the edges of it as well.
The interesting thing about this place, is that I can cast a bunch of bullets from what ever mold and different alloys I want to try and then shoot them at 285 yards before they are cool to test them.
On my mountain property, I had a buffalo cut from a single 4×8 foot steel sheet and had two pipe cups on the back of it also so it would stand up on steel “T” fence posts. I could get back 1100 yards on that one, and had it marked off at 100 yard intervals to as close as 400 yards. I only shot at it with my custom Sharps rilfes like this one.
I had an identical buffalo target made up and donated and installed it on the Horse Ridge range outside of Bend Oregon on the 1000 yard range.
I used to shoot at that buffalo on the mountain daily, in the winter I did a lot of shooting at the 1000 yard mark using the Polaris snow mobile seat as a rest. The winters snows would catch them and after the spring melt they would be laying at the target mound intact ready for the remelt pot.
I just live to shoot long range and have since 13 years of age, but the only way I can do it here with any challenge due to the short 285 yard range is with air guns.
I grew up on a ranch in central Oregon and used to shoot rim fires in my dads plowed fields in the spring, one of the first things I noticed was that it was bullshit that a 22 lr would go 1 mile, the fartherest range I could get it to make dust was around 550 yards with extreme holdover angle. I would pull the lead out of two 22 LR cartridges and combine the powder into one to get them to shoot further out in those plowed fields, until I started blowing the extractors off my bolt and then blew a piece of cartridge case into my ear.
45 years ago, I made one of my best shots when I shot a cat off a irrigation raised border at that ranch with a 788 22-250 and M8 7.5 power Leupold I had at 980 yards. I used to ask cat lovers after that, what is a cat good for?
My answer was “980 yards on a windless day.”

i wish i could have a window next to my loading bench to test loads , that would be sweet.
My grand parent s on my dads side use to have 100 acres, on one tract, and they lived on another that was 15 acres, that was out of the city limits until i was around 15,then the city took there property over , so i spent my time growing up, working hogs, cattle , getting eggs from the hen house, shooting critters out of the gardens, water moccasins out of the stock tanks, etc.
Most of my time there was in the summer monthes and holidays , my mom lived in the city, and that is where i live now.
but my soul is still out in the country, need to get back out there,
I am 30 feet from my casting equipment. I can shoot out the window if I want and my bench at my 285 yard range is 100 feet away.

I’ve been reading whereas a healthy diet with fermented foods ie. sauerkraut, pickles, olives etc. help the body detoxify.

hell i will still put a back up pellet in my lips , heading out the door , i have always made sure of ventilation when casting, hell, it just makes good sense, i don’t have to have some environmentalist or doctor tell me that. 🙂
I have to drive 45 min now to get to the range i am a member of, but i think i need to get to shooting again this year.
really burns me to think that i use to could drilve 6 min to get to shoot on a private range , that most of the time i had to myself. 👿

i was a memeber for close to 10 years,it had been there from like the 50’s i think. I am a member of the Parker county sporsmen club now.
I actually went in and got my lead levels checked.
I retired at age 31 on a full pension with a brain injury, which trashed my recent memory and PTSS, which also effects your recent memory.
But the thing was, as a kid, I used carry pellets in my mouth, or 22 shells, nothing was really known about lead danger at that time.
I started out casting on the kitchen stove, and in later years developed safer ways to handle lead, but I should have been exposed big time to the hazards of lead, which I have bben told never diminish and keep building up.
I had friends who worked in Police ranges without adequate ventelation who had elevated lead levels in their blood, so I wondered how that affrected my congnitive ability.
I went in about 10 years ago and had the most advanced lead level tests medical science had at the time.
The results came back indicating that my lead levels were significantly lower than what should have naturally accumulatd for a man my age.
Not saying there is no danger from lead exposure, just calling bullshit on the EPA and all the people wanting to ban casting of bullets and fishing weights.

Yes sir, i have been shooting since i could not hold up a 1911 , and had dads hands to help .
Have been reloading since early teens, and casting almost as long, was lazy at first and bought lead bullets,(( blasphemy))
my dads says , why don’t you roll your own , we still had molds for 44 , and 357 around from when my dad had cast years before, but i had a guy in town that had a casting machine, and went to the gun shows to sell and would sell out of his garage, he would give you a card , and when you bought from him he wold punch a hole in it, and give you a bigger discount each time, well it got to where he did not like seeing me coming 😆
but danged if he didnt move off some where and i lost track of him, so this is when i started casting heavy, had a private range 6 to 10 minutes from the house, so i shot allot. i haven’t cast for awhile , i have a big pot that i make batches up with it hold allot of lead ,
i mix , wheel weights, Linotype, and have pure lead if needed and several differant solders , i have a lyman 429421 mold that i use to check the alloy, i mix until the bullet drops out at what ever alloy im after
10/40 solder 195 grains
50/50 solder 210g
1 to 1 lino to wheel weights 241 1/2 grain
1 to 1 1/2 L to WW 244 1/2 g
1 to 2 L to ww 244 1/2 g
1 to 8 50/50soilder to ww 244 to 245 g
1 50/50 4 lino 5 ww 245
any way this is how i would batch and i would pour into the old corn cob corn bread cast iron molds , it makes a nice ingot that fits into the pots.
my big mixing pot would make up about 5 – 5 gal buckets of these corn bread lead ingots about 1/2 full, so you cold move them without tearing up the buckets.
i would also melt up ingots of lino type ,pure lead ,and wheel weights to change the alloy in a pot to what ever i was after also.
Its been along tme since i have done this, i used to batch twice a year ,
wow i cant remember when it was the last time , but i have several of the large coffee cans full of each caliber cast up and all my batch buckets are pretty much full.
I was looking at my casting notes from back when (probably late 80 or early 90s when i ws shooting allot), and i see some prices for loading,, $18.00 for 1000 primers ,, $14.00 for 1# of powder , 😯
dang i miss those days, i could load 44 mag for 22 grains of 2400 with 250 grain, or as i mixed 247 grain semi wad cutter for $3.00 a box of 50
store bought Hustler 44 bullets were .03 cents each which makes it $4.70 a box of 50
