NEI Molds

Powderburner sounds like our lives have followed the same path. I was luckey enough to grow up in a shooting family. Our family reunions were a big dinner then out behind the barn for a shooting match 😀 God life was good. Now if you are a gun person the press has you marked as some short of sicko pervert. What the hell has happen to our country ❓ 👿

My lead supply is getting smaller these days but I’m sure my shop could qualify as a supper sight fund clean up area 😯 😀 I too made the auto shops for wheel weights and all the plumbers in town knew where to get rid of all their old traps 🙄 My best discovery was from a old shooting buddy that worked for the phone company. Remember all those big over head lines around town, well those phone lines were wrapped in LEAD pure shoft lead. Holly crap that was a gold mine to me when they started going under ground with phone line.

There also was another mother load for lead for me. a large publishing company located in my town was turn into a museum. As a young Jaycee
volunteer helping cleanup the old building I discovered line-o-type machines. Guess what the line-o-type was made of that they printed with was ❓ LEAD 😯 😯 😀 A lot of that old line-o-type found it’s way to my house. It was very hard but mixed with phone company lead I found the right alloy for wonderful cast bullets.

Hell I’m starting to sound like the old fart I am. Closing thought from this “oldguy” where our country is going right now scares the hell out of me… 😯 😯 😯 👿 👿

I had older guys that pointed the way when i started, and read allot of books, there was no Internet. i had a guy, an older man ask how much i knew about casting at the gun show several years ago while i was looking at some of his used molds for sale,

I told him i know enough about casting that i know i will never quit learning about casting,

I believe RC is our oldest caster here, any way has posted most about casting i think, and i have seen nothing that he has said that was not right on,

I have learned from you guys , things that you have done differant than i have and such.

I wish that i cast and shot as much as i used too. there was a time right before i had all the kids , that i used to shoot several hundred rounds a week, rifle and handgun and shot gun , i would go thru fazes of wanting to shoot shot gun then rifle , then handgun ,

I tell you what , i see the post about you guys scoring lead, i will have to take some pictures of my lead stashes , i used to never come home without some lead from some where. 🙄

used to see it all the time on the jobs, scraps , left over plumbing and such, i had regular stops to pick up wheel weights

I will tell you one story that will make you cringe, i had a friend that worked at western auto, back in the 90’s , mechanic, when the wheel weight buckets would get full he would take them back to his rent house and dump them in his back yard, i did not know about this until he moves out in a hurry, 👿

He said , hey i have a bunch of wheel weight over at the house that i was in, you ought to go and get them,

I said how much , he says , Oh maybe a good truck load. (*^&$$%#$^&*^&&^

well i go over there and it was gone they cleaned it up already $%#@$%#%&^&

I had a 550 grain tapered Hoch nose pour mold for my 2 Sharps rifles that were chambered in 45 2.6.

I left 3 grease grooves exposed and the case mouth just crimped enough to remove the bell from the expanding die, that way I could seat it far enough into the throat that the bullets driving band was engraved by lands.

It was by far the best shooting and casting bullet I shot in those 2 rifles.

I was using a Federal mag primer, a primer cover wad, 83 grains of Swiss #2, a fiber wad and SPG, the alloy was 30-1 and Starline brass. It was especially accurate in the Borschardt with it’s Krieger 30 inch barrel.

I really prefer the nose pour capability because the base ends up perfect with a correct full fill of the cavity and any problems with the sprue smearing or rounding on the edges of the mouth of the cavity are not as dramatic becase they effect the nose instead of the base.

The question is going to be whether this barrel with a 1-14 twist can stablize it, Bowmans rifle stablizes the 100+ grain bullets, and Tofazou’s 1-14 stablizes RJ’s long 100 Spitzers and he is only getting 820 FPS, I am hoping to get 1000 to 1025 out of it.

If not I will have Jack make me up a 1-10 barrrel and I will either send him some of the bullets to cut a lead for, or do it myself.

Anyway, I have high hopes for it, it will be here by week end and I will find out if it flys straight.

When I lived up on my mountain, Walt and NEI were located just 50 miles away in Canyon City, and in that country 50 miles was considered close.

I got to set down and talk to Walt i his one man shop aout what I wanted, I had him make me up four molds, a 220 308, a 40 180, a 44 320, and a 458 430 with a metplate so wide on it you could eat off of.

Walt was a great guy, and I was disappointed when he moved on.

I had missed this thread, too bad it is what it is today.

I really like my Accuratemold, but they don’t go lower than 30 caliber.

But the Hoch mold I have coming this week will shoot one hole groups at 300 yards and it shoots flat for about 400 yards and then starts climbing. 😛
