New .308 air gun bullet for my Corsair
Wanting to go lighter in the 308 bullet category, i bought a LYMAN .311 RN mold and had it HP’d. The bullets were then sized to .308 as per my Corsairs preferred liking. These bullets look real promising as they have a RN profile with a nice looking ogive. Just from measuring different areas of the bullet, it seems as though the contact areas of the bullet are gonna be way less than the other bullets that i’ve cast as they are of a FP design and the walls of those bullets are straight and long therefore having more friction.
These bullets weigh in at 128.5 grains which is close enough to my goal of 125 grains. The mold is originally a LYMAN .311″/130 gr RN mold:

If you click on the the picture you get the dimensions of the bullet . One is just under a inch and the other just over a inch long . And both are heavy and need support in the barrel twist . I would say leave it in there . You might have them thinned down some say to .070 . But talk to him and see what Jerry thinks as well . You are going to have power and you do not want to strip the lead . The alloy you are going to use will play a roll here as well IMO .Marvin

I did not modify that mold (I wish i did). Erik at http://www.hollowpointmold.com/ did all the work to the mold.
So basically what happens is this. I or U pick a mold of our choice (style, caliber, weight, nose shape…etc) then i send it to him. In this case it was a plain ole .311″ caliber 130 gr. Round Nose mold meant for guns like the SKS or AK47. So its a 7.62x39mm bullet mold. Erik then custom machines the block to accept his “Cramer” styled pins and block. The Cramer styled HP block is held in the mold by little “E CLIPS”. That Cramer block slides in and out. The E CLIPS keep it from falling out of the mold block but allow the Cramer block to slide free of the mold cavity to drop the bullets. Once the bullets fall free of the mold, simply squeeze the handle close and close the sprue plate and pour another batch and on and on and on and on and on

Just kidding….Jerry, that is a good point for sure but, we will certainly see. I think its gonna fly pretty good myself. I cant wait till this “IT NEVER RAINS IN SO CAL” weather gets better. Its been raining every damned weekend here and if it ain’t raining, the wind is kicking up like Chuck Norris.
RC, don’t know the specifics as of yet but the 155 gr FP and the 148 gr HP both have really long bearing surfaces (3/4 of the length of bullet) but they do shoot very well and the speeds are pretty good for the weight. Another thing about long bearing surfaces in BB gun is, even though they are long, the guns seem to have no problem moving em along at speed. I’m also quite sure if somehow i could squeeze down the size of the bearing surfaces just above the top grease groove on the bullets posted above, i’m sure velocity between the 2 bullets would be different with the advantage going to the bullet with less bearing surface. And i would be will to be that the FPS increase would not be that great given the fact that both bullets would still weigh the same. One would just create a little less friction.

I have had LBT moulds, and they are fine indeed, and I have recently checked their web site.
That ones I mentioned to you have two lube grooves, which of course we do not need lube, what do you think would happen if the middle band was left off so that it just had a band at the end of the bullet and one at the front and a big space in the middle. Is it worth it to cut down on friction?

What ever you want as long as it fits his guidelines he will make . You can send him the drawings with specs and he will build it . Or if you see a 50 cal and want it made into a 30 cal he will do it . No phone but he is quick in e-mail response . I have that mold which he altered for me in 312,358 and 455 . And they all are as accurate as can be for me . He has treated me well as well as LBT . Both are good mold makers .Marvin

Thanks so much for that site, when I read that he does not charge for custom moulds, and that I assume means I can order a 458 mold as a 452 mold, it simplfies the search dramatically for a 452 bullet.
I am liking the 46-400-B and the 46-425-B cut as 452 molds.
Add to the fact that I can get them in aluminum to aid my sore hands is a plus also.

OOOOOO!! nice, but they are going to flip, they look like the 100grn. ones I have and I drilled one out and it flippped, so good luck, you never know for sure till you try them.
I do not have any experience with the bullet you asked about . I don’t know what the total drive ban area is . Read the section about molds in the article I posted . It should help you . I have had LBT , as well as Accurate make molds for me . Both are very good . Here is his site . Marvin

I know that ogive nose forms say “aerodynamic” but to me they also say “susceptible to offset lift.” A little wobble in a bullet with a flat face or drive ring near the nose is sometimes OK. The same wobble in a bullet with “lift” characteristics sometimes sends the bullet unstable in short order.
We’ll see when the test is reported!
Yea I was speaking on the looks alone I guess. Hollowpoints are an interesting type……I hear various opinions on how some HP profiles with fairly deep cavities of moderate size supposedly have some sort of an inherent advantage as far as stabilization, and accuracy goes…….I myself don’t know what to make of that.
Hope to get a .357 Devastator chuckin’ rifle someday to play with. I can’t think of a better bigbore air rifle for nutria hunting than that, and I would really like to see first-hand just how affective a .357DevastatorHP@230+fpe is on coyote. If I could only secure some good property to hunt nutria on……

Nice little pile of fun you casted-up there (did I say that right…casted-up?). Those look like they have one mission in life, and that mission is well over 100 yards…..that nose profile just screams long-range shooting.

Its a bit of both. Yes, I can choose a bullet type and weight of my liking. Then i have it modified to a HP which does cost MORE money but hey, its a HOBBY…lol
As far as cost goes, i honestly haven’t broken it down but i can tell you that if you go on a website like EBAY, you can buy pure lead for lets say, $50 for 50-60 lbs of lead. So lets just stick with 50 bucks for 50 lbs of lead. Now, there is 7,000 grains in 1 pound. So 50 lbs of lead is 350,000 grains. If you then lets say cast a 308 bullet at 128.5 grain each, then from 50 lbs of lead will yield you 2,724 bullets. That’s a shit load of bullets for a big bore. If you cast 45’s at 300 grains each then 50lbs of lead will yield you 1,166 bullets. Even if you buy commercially hard cast bullets for lets say a 45 airgun, they are OVER 50 bucks for only 500 rounds. So you would have to spend about 125-150 bucks on commercially cast bullets to equal what you would spend on casting your own. And casting your own also will allow you to mix different types alloys to your liking. Hell, you can even make PURE TIN or GOLD bullets if ya wanna…lol.
There are some commercially cast 308 bullets but, they might or might not be right for your gun or for you. The commercially cast 45 bullets have a much better selection but again, they are probably all hard cast which might give you decent accuracy but might not be a good performer on game.
And yes, its cheaper than buying from other bullet casters plus, its fun to do. Its satisfying to cast your own bullets and then see them perform well on paper and game.
