New 4500 psi 500 cc bottle test on the .257 Talon/Dor
OK, got the 500cc 4500 psi bottle in late yesterday, and got it ready to do a bit of testing this afternoon. Only had about an hour to test, but learned a lot already. 😀
I have recently experimented with overfilling the factory bottle. And “NO” Don’t do this!!! My bad, and my foolishness.
Now for the results so far. The factory bottle (500 cc’s) at 3000psi in the 21″ barreled .257 with a 60 grain NOE was shooting at 930’s. It did shoot quite a bit faster with the original valve that Doug made for it, but it was bored out “TOO” much and finally failed. It was putting out in the 970 range.
I pushed the factory bottle up to 3400 psi and it climed to the same 970 the old valve did at 3000.
Enter the 4500 bottle. I filled it to 4000 and did a string. It was 990-998-1007-1021-1012-1002-990–983-976-971—-WooHoo!!!!!!!! :8:
I then ran her up to 4500 and the bullet hit the ground in front of the target at 80 yards. Dayum!!!
Need more spring I guess. But she sure is Shooting Good!!! Blowing like a Mother Today, so no real accuracy test. A little over an inch was the best I could do.
Running into something odd though. 5 shots on the money, then a sudden drop of about 2 inches and 2″ to the left. And a good group there. Two completely different groups. 😯
Ran the test again and it repeated. exactly!
Obviously, I need more testing!!!

Yeah, that is a very tempting thing to do, reg. it at 3250 p.s.i.
Maw, you running the maddog stock, or something else? I like a longer LOP… feels better. Not sure how this rifle is going to go together yet! Still figuring things out.
My bottle rides just above the shoulder, the bottle is a little more than 1/2 above my shoulder and alittle less below my shoulder, you are more then likely, to just put it above shoulder and still shoot, if it seems too long.
The raw extrusion? Sure did… two in fact. One is going to be the .257. The other is basically a Talon clone, with a proper set up. For my .30 barrel… I suppose I could put anything in it though, If I had more parts made… Oh hell, I didn’t even think of that…

but it’s so… UGLY… 😆 I do appreciate all the input though! I guess I’ll just finish the gun before deciding… it’s going to be a while anyway- need to find someone to machine my frame.

But I don’t want to buy a maddog!!! 😆 Seriously though, thanks for the input… I just don’t want to damage the tank… I’d hate to have lasted this many deployments, to be killed due to my stupidity!! At home of all places! Still going to see what options there are! I was thinking Tony’s stock too… it’s a slip-fit.
Im not sure how anyone else does… but i got mine on my condor with the mad dog ultimo stock
I think that if i had a reg on it pushing it out another 3 inches or more it would not affect anything cause the way i shoulder it the bottle would clear right over my shoulder or lay right on top …. for me the butt pad down low feels real natural
maybe thats why everyone complains about bending neck to get sight picture. but no problem here. seems natural with the mad dog setup.
I posted this on dman’s 4500 psi tank thread as well… But I wanted a wider fan base 😆 anyway, what stock options are there? I’m thinking the new AF stock? I’m not sure I want to put a clamp type stock on a CF tank… thoughts? It’s pictured below. Not sure if it’s the one for Talon/Condor or the TalonP, I assume they’re both really similar…
So did you just thread the valve directly into the tank?? Oooh, if it’s just that simple my D257 valve is gonna be a happy camper!!!! I was thinking a JDS airman 4500 psi in/Whatever you want as output(Doug says he’d set them/verify if/when he has the time… he’s a busy guy!), and Doug’s .257 valve… Maybe 3200 psi out? Anyway, I was also thinking this would make the set up too long, as the 4500 psi tank is already a little longer than a stock tank… Hmmmmm… I really do hope either A) it’s as easy as just threading Doug’s valve into the tank and/or B) a Reg setup can be had w/o too much more length…

I need to talk to doug, (Dyotat about thre possibility fo a Reg. with this set-up. Roach Creek is out of the country at the moment. But he is paying close attention to the progress with this. We all have high hopes!
Did a smidgen of testing today, but the wind was ferocious!!! 25-30 stright on. And shifting wildly. this kept me from any meaningful target work. Buuuut, Being a bullet shootier rather than a pellet shooter, I shot targets ANY-WAY LOL!!! So far, the gun seems to prefer a 3800 to 3850 psi fill for best results. So I’m leaving a lot on the table here with the 4500 psi capability of the bottle. This is where I think a Good Reg. Would come in.
The results were very promising. 60 gr. NOE still clocking at 1020+ fps for very flat shooting. In 10 shots, it only drops aopx. 30-35 fps. So MUCH- MUCH better than what I was able to get from the factory bottle. Tripple the shot count in the sweet spot, and an average of 90 to 100 fps increase. Not bad. Not bad at all for a bottle swap!!!
Need somne decent weather to see what she can really do. And very much looking forward to trying out the 80 NOE’s again. Just too slow with the 3200 psi fill of the factory bottle, but this is going to be a whole new ball game. 😀
Kinda makes me wish I had a longer bbl and the REAL .257 valve. This is with Dyotats .25 valve. Which is larger than an AF high flow by a good bit. But not the full sized .257 valve. But then again, I doubt the shot count would be as good as this is, with this still small 500cc bottle.
So far, I’m very pleased with the results. I still need to fiddle with spring tensions and top hat gap. So lots to do yet! 😀 😉

The new bottle is sweet, I have to boost my compressor up now, so I can at least get more then 1, 4000 fill. You got the lead slingin now Knife!!

*facepalm* I even read your post about your .45 set up from Eldy… jeeze. Getting old sucks! I’m thinking maybe Tony’s stock set up would be the best, but w/the rounded back of the tank would it work?? Oooh, or maybe some sort of Frankenstock between a TT stock and the AF stock, and a WokButt… Damn I’m good… Now who’s going to build it???
