New member … Fooling around with Mutants

Well after reading this forum quite a bit the last few months being a relatively new Taipan Mutant ” Standard” owner figured with all my fiddling around would share some tricks & tuning things learned. …. along with some just for kicks banter with you Talon hooligans.

As a New owner reading that these pups were ready to rock-n-roll out of the box went about disregarding this and dove in to apply some stuff shared here previously while perhaps finding some stones un-turned.

1st was to alter the stock for not only more comfort, but give it some grip and sexy it up some 😉
Cutting some finger relief grooves in fore stock followed with some taping and application of bed Liner paint, some paint to change the looks of shroud came up with this.

Also added some short section of Carbon Fiber tube just for bling …

An LDC adapter from Dman made possible to add an in house manufactured LDC …. added @ 4 1/2″ in OAL when attached.

Next to get addressed was WHERE TO CARRY some extra magazines “On the gun” …. Head scratchier there.
So after some pondering came up with an idea to revisit years of Model RC boat manufacture working with thin marine plywood coming up with this design … All the “Skin” ply is 1/32″ 3 ply with a pine sandwich. Hole saw made the cut outs and band saw cut the tops out just shy of ends so mags SQUEEZE the foam a bit so they can’t fall out. Anywho … ON-GUN 4 magazine holder.

This a good introduction on the fiddling externally … been inside now and founds gains there too, stay tuned for more sharing :8:

Regards,
Scott

MotorHead,

Really nice mods you “just fiddlin’ around dude” !!!

You are being to modest sir, that I am sure of that!

You also have a thing for exacting perfection, which is always a pain in the butt. I have that to the disease level and to make that even worse, I have had that isses since a young and dumb kid 🙂 Now a old and dumb kid 🙂

I have found a little black smithing efforts does help alot though.

Now one thing you mentioned that no one here has commented on, and it was spot on “Talon hooligans”
Got to love this 🙂

You might add to this for most of us here would be
Talon hooligans gearheads!

Now not having a Tiapian yet, can’t be sure, but I have been wondering about finger fitting the pistol grip area and a little trigger finger relief to help place a quick track to your finger to its placement to take the shot?

Not at all sure it would help but for me I have always liked that as well as the fore grip.

All this sort of following of the Tiapian has been the reasons I want one.

I also have quite the interest in the Royal Thunder, just one thing for this no info about the level of quality of the trigger!!! The Tiapian has an excellent trigger from what you have read on so many post’s here!!!

Got to really like all you
Talon hooligan GearHeads here and all your sharing honest info.

Thank to all here!

Ps. Dang forgot to ask Scott, how did the Kodiak 21gr pellets shoot from your barrel? I really like those pellets. My Rapid does also with 50yard groups of under dime size groups and with some serious speed!

I must have seen it back in 2016, I post on it about the SS screws,
I don’t remember reading it, But that normal for me.
Mike

Me too. Great write up and thanks for sharing all your findings. Do you have pictures of the new hole you drilled into the hammer bore? Trying to visualize it and not exactly sure how you did it.

Wow can’t believe I missed this post back in 2016.

More tuning data & work … an FYI cross posting link: http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=35766

Motorhead good to see you on the mutant, you’ve always been very helpful on the mrod forums, so I’m happy to see you here too.. gun looks great..!!

Wow
Good thinking SS screws, I do a lot of that on my motorcycles,
Titanium, That’s out of my price range,
I had to special order a Titanium bolt for a race pipe, One small bolt was like 42 dollars

Carried in a 30″ UTG “Alpha Battle Carrier” bag fitting snugly within it :winkn:

quote Cricket:

How did you get all the screw sizes? Or did you just measure the length and order standard screws? My scope rings have Titanium screws and it is the nicest thing ever. Was thinking of switching out all my Cricket screws for Titanium ones but feels like a hassle

Took one of each to a hardware store that stocks loose SS fasteners and just matched em up.
These metric screws thread pitch is common for diameter so nothing special like a firearm can be.

Another snippet on changes made for cosmetics was the replacement of ALL the external black iron screws with Stainless screws. This included the scope tower clamps, rear receiver cover & forward stock retention position.

Also added to keep the COLD metal off your cheek was to use VELCRO ( Fuzzy side ) on top and on sides of rear receiver with a strip over the barrel boss as well.

Last time action was dismantled took trigger blade out and Rounded the finger contact face of it to eliminate that uncomfortable square & sharp corner shape. ( Done on a small belt sander & finished by strapping face with emery cloth )

Last was to place a small bit of that yellow self adhesive hobby foam used in the Mag holder … onto the edge of cocking lever where it contact side of receiver when closed. THIS ELIMINATED the CLICK sound when cocking & closing the lever.
In hunting situations LOW NOISE is important. * After a bit the pressure on the foam from lever compressing flattens it way out and yet it still damps the click sound :winkn:

Welcome Scott, :tag: nice thread and it’s good to see you on this forum. RS

Damn! Nice thread bro, really like the mag holders, you could sell those.

Last contribution to this thread is ….. So hows accuracy in general ?
Set to standard settings it pretty much is self explanatory … :8:

After a few PM’s … what the MAG carrier is size wise attached to the Scope brackets.

It attaches with 3/4″ velcro onto the vertical side of scope brackets and weights minus mags and pellet less than 2 ounces.
