New member … Fooling around with Mutants

Well after reading this forum quite a bit the last few months being a relatively new Taipan Mutant ” Standard” owner figured with all my fiddling around would share some tricks & tuning things learned. …. along with some just for kicks banter with you Talon hooligans.

As a New owner reading that these pups were ready to rock-n-roll out of the box went about disregarding this and dove in to apply some stuff shared here previously while perhaps finding some stones un-turned.

1st was to alter the stock for not only more comfort, but give it some grip and sexy it up some 😉
Cutting some finger relief grooves in fore stock followed with some taping and application of bed Liner paint, some paint to change the looks of shroud came up with this.

Also added some short section of Carbon Fiber tube just for bling …

An LDC adapter from Dman made possible to add an in house manufactured LDC …. added @ 4 1/2″ in OAL when attached.

Next to get addressed was WHERE TO CARRY some extra magazines “On the gun” …. Head scratchier there.
So after some pondering came up with an idea to revisit years of Model RC boat manufacture working with thin marine plywood coming up with this design … All the “Skin” ply is 1/32″ 3 ply with a pine sandwich. Hole saw made the cut outs and band saw cut the tops out just shy of ends so mags SQUEEZE the foam a bit so they can’t fall out. Anywho … ON-GUN 4 magazine holder.

This a good introduction on the fiddling externally … been inside now and founds gains there too, stay tuned for more sharing :8:

Nice work…..
I have the shorty Taipan. :biggrinn:

Lol …
Some more fiddling this last few weeks had me looking at HAMMER and if any friction was present there ?

Where my concern was is that the BRASS adjuster cap has a precision rear hole that supports the rear of the hammer as it slides rearward when cocked and forward upon firing. The diameter of hammer and that of the bore it slides within IS NOT VENTED … While cocking gun is a not issue forcing the air out as hammer is pushed into the caps hole … Firing the gun and speed that hammer falls there is a HUGE suction created as the hammer is drawn out of the caps hammer support hole 😮

Fix was to drill a small .040″ vent hole on a diagonal angle starting at the max diameter by threads and have the hole intersect the hammer bore near the rear of it.
Now this bore is vented and hammers free motion increased.

* Shooting it again with same settings … yup gained a few FPS was able to incrementally back off the hammer spring tension a tad more 8)

Welcome to the Tag :8:

quote Motorhead:

After reading about the “Swiss Cheese” plenum spacer mod that gained some volume had to go there and take a look :geekn:
Yea plenums pretty challenged for volume if ones wanting some power with heavier lead.

Rather than get cheesy with oem spacer took a serious look at the physical size and placement regulator sits in respect to the VENT hole and o-rings sealing Reg within tube.

I swiss cheesed the Factory one … But realized it was to short also. Plus being unsure the material i didn’t want to have a collapse.

I make them out of 7075 T6 now and longer at around .025″ wall with the swiss cheese holes.

Very good mod. Along with bottle necking the Valve stem. That will get you another 20 FPS

Im gonna make a whole new endcap/ valve housing that will double the Post chamber… Id like to bump mine up to around 890 with the 18.1s…

Thanks for sharing!!

The factory set up had vent dang near touching forward o-ring that would allow extending plenum length a tad over .200″
Also noted was wall thickness which was IMO excessive feeling less wall thickness could find volume too.
* Using thin wall Stainless ( Actually had to cut it ) to get at .025″ wall at length required.
Crunching #’s on volume was able to gain HALF AGAIN the volume on the spacer tube area of the larger plenum.
OEM plenum spacer worked out to have a volume of @ 7.19 cc’s
The Replaced plenum spacer @ 11.9 cc’s
Increase in size @ 4.75 cc’s
This an @ 49.34% increase within the plenum spacer setting between regulator and valve.

So … what this do for power :8:
Being down just atad from max on the hammer tension adjusted … CAP FLUSH with receiver 😉
JSB 18.1’s head out at 990 fps ! making 39 ft lbs energy !
H&N 21.1 Barracuda out at 925 fps for 40 ft lbs !

This with factory reg setting of 140 bar 😛

Now granted leaned on for power the guns an air hog and while this mod was to gain efficiency .. which is does do.
My typical setting has hammer tension 1 3/4 turns out from this so it shoots JSB 15.9s at 900 fps which it does 60 +/- shots on a fill.

Powers there if wanted and just amazes me the adjustablity these gun have with simple hammer tension changes.
