I have tried quality digital calipers to measure pellet heads but to no avail.:(

For those of us that don’t have access to the tricky-poo head sizing thingy- majig, what might we try 😕

Or am I just incompentent and don’t know how to do my calipers? 😉

Ted,

It would be interesting if you would slug your barrel to get these two groove diameter measurements: The choke and the midpoint of your barrel.

On my 25 LBT development, I found that the choke just did not work well with cast bullets, and since cutting it off, I get better accuracy with Kings.

On mid point barrel diameter, and again I am talking about groove diameter, with cast bullets, it seems that the closer your bullet is to the exact groove diameter, the better the accuracy.

Airguns I believe simply do not have the power to swage down or bump up a bullet upon firing like PB’s do. Perhaps it is the same thing with Diablo designs.

I find that longer ranges like I shoot, 150 to 280 yards, the Diablos come in a poor second, and my corkscrewing pellets will land low like yours do, but at 150 yards were talking 18 to 24 inches low. I am also finding that my Royale 500 which does great at 50 and okay at 100 loses nearly 40% to corkscrews at 150 yards. My dechoked LW barrel on the other hand does much better at 150 with Kings, but still not as good as it does with cast bullets.

I can’t check the choked or rifled portion of my Royale 500 barrel because I have sent my Royale 500 off to AOA to get the ELite regulator, so I do not have it here to slug, but due to the fact that I shortened the 500 to the overal length of my Royale 400, I do have the orginal 4.5 inches of the smooth breech section that I think I will slug.

Great video, it gives insight on some or at least part of what is happening with the corkscrewing.

Thanks,

Roachcreek/unrepentantsinner

Edit: I just slugged the 4.5 inch of ST breechI had cut off the Royale 500, I got .250. My Kings measure and gawd they are hard to measure, .254-255 for the skirts, and the heads are .247, perhaps that is why I get the corkscrewing pellets at longer ranges. Of course the rifled section of that barrel or what passes as rifling is on it’s way to Airzona so I have no idea what that measurement is.

Ha, I was just about to post the vid on TAG, and I see Mark has already played me in. 🙂

“unlock flyer mystery”? Possibly one of them. But, I am fairly confident there are more.

So, consider the can of worms OPEN!

Special thanks to Ray Pratt for allowing me to test his creation. It took a little practice to make sure I was getting good readings. But, once I figured out the idiosyncrasies of this device, I had it giving me reliable, repeatable data.

Ted
