Q:

New to Air-Guns! Please Help!

Hi, my name is Jason and I’m a Freshman in High-School and until recently, I haven’t really been interested in Pellet/BB/Air-Soft guns. However, after seeing the TalonSS on Pyramydair I decided that I had to get one by this Christmas. I have no clue on how to really use an Air-Rifle, however I’ve read and researched a lot about them when I had wanted to get the Gamo Whisper .22 Cal w/ the Air Venturi Ram Gas upgrade. I didn’t know about “tune ups” until I heard of a person who did it for Gamo under the alias of CharlieDaTuna which eventually led me here.

I’ve been searching through the forums and I was at first thinking of getting the “combo” pack for the Talon SS w/ the scope but saw someone say to instead get the Bushnell Legend 5-15×40 Rifle Scope for the same amount of money. I was wondering about a few things about the TalonSS Air-Rifle and I was wondering if you guys here at this active forum could answer them. I sent a copy of these questions (below) to the customer support Email team at Pyramydair but am not sure because I have had terrible experiences with their chat support. I was also wondering where I could get the cheapest TalonSS (Gun Only) and a separate rail (for the Bushnell Legend) and the Bushnell Legend Scope. I know that Pyramydair has a 10% off on your whole shopping cart coupon but I was wondering if you guys knew a different store that offered something higher? Do you guys know if Air-Gun retailers give bigger coupons during Christmas time? My wallet is a little on the thin side and I was wondering if I could get this all for under/around $600.

Also, in my state (VA) and city (suburban), shooting any projectiles from a gun (be it pellet/bb/airsoft) are prohibited. However, all of my friends with Pellet guns and bb guns shoot them in their backyard and I was wondering if people under these same conditions always went to a hunting area to shoot squirrels and birds? I know I’m going a little bit high on the quality and price for my first air gun; however, after seeing the TalonSS I’m not sure I can resist buying it. I would absolutely get a full tune up from TalonTunes when I can afford it, but until then I’m going to hope the TalonSS I get will be as good as people say.
PS: I just registered onto Talonairgun’s forums and I would like to say thank you to everyone reading this!

———————————-Questions—————————————
-What is the difference between the c02 version and PCP version of Airforce Talon SS?
-Do you need an adaptor for a (any) pump to connect to the air tank of the Airforce Talon SS? If so, what is the name/where can I find it on this site?
-Can any pump with a psi-measuring dial w/ an adaptor for the air tank be used to pump air into the Talon SS? I have a bike tire pump that looks exactly like “AirForce 3-stage PCP Hand Pump”, but I’m not exactly sure if it would work with the Airforce tank.
-For the AirForce Talon SS – Gun only – no sights -no clamp Powerful pre-charged pneumatic , Caliber – 0.22, where could I buy clamps for the AirForce 4-16x50AO Rifle Scope, Mil-Dot Reticle, 1/4 MOA, 1″ Tube?
-What are good pellets for the TalonSS? I’ve heard of some called Eun Jin which I think are super heavy and Benjamin pellets which I think are for practicing/plinking.

Jason if you buy a Co2 Talon SS you can later switch to HPA = High Pressure Air. The problem is Co2 is very tempature dependent.

Talon SS CO2, Adapter & 20 CO2 Tank — 435.00
Scope — 190.00
Rings — 15.00 to 30.00
Tri-Rail — 30.00 if needed

Grand Total is 670.00

Jason, get just the basic rifle to start with, new or 2nd-hand. A hand-pump will cost you about the same as a scuba-bottle, but don’t be put off a pump. Once you’ve filled the bottle once (at a shop with a compressor) you’ll only need to top it up thereafter, and it’s really no big deal.

Once you have the basic rifle and a means to keep the bottle filled you can enjoy shooting it as-is. Then start thinking about getting goodies for it, such as rails and scopes and power-up mods etc.

You don’t have to shell out for a pump or scuba-bottle straight away either, you can have the bottle topped up at a shop with a compressor if one is convenient to you, for just a couple of dollars each time. 🙂

So you’re saying that I could just buy the “Gun Only” version of the Talon SS? I think I asked this before in this thread but…. taking a Talon SS to the Scuba store to get it filled with their own compressor would actually work, its just not convenient right? Do I need to buy the adapters from Pyramyd and take them to the store with me so I could maybe attach it to their scuba tank and after, take it off? I was thinking of going for the “Gamo Whisper” but if I can only get the gun (Talon SS), I’d be happy with it.

Hate to be the wet blanket, but just because your friends are doing it doesn’t make it OK.

I’m not familiar with VA’s laws, but I’m pretty sure they haven’t outlawed guns completely, so I’m assuming that the prohibition you mention applies to persons under 18?

First of all, Pyramid and others aren’t going to sell you anything if they know you’re under 18. Are your parents OK with you getting a gun? Because your mom or dad is going to have to buy it for you.

The Talon is a damned powerful gun, it’s not a toy like an Airsoft and it’s a heck of a lot more of a “real” gun than the Daisys or Crosmans your friends probably have. It’s serious business, and if the cops DO catch you with it, you’re going end up with your tail in a twist big time.

I’m just sayin’…. you need to take a hard look at what you’re thinking about doing. Make sure you and your parents completely understand the law and decide what kind of risks you’re taking. Having a gun crime on your record before you even get out of high school ain’t gonna make life any easier for you.

Plus you mention that you’ve never had any interest in guns until now and you said you don’t even “have a clue” about how to use an air rifle… which makes me believe that you also have no clue about gun safety. 🙄

You don’t need a Talon (at least not yet). There’s probably a gun-safety course available in your area. Sign up for it, learn the basics first. Then go from there.

#1 I know that just because almost everyone I know with a pellet gun shoots in their backyard does not make it okay.
#2 I know that Pyramyd won’t sell Air Rifles to minors. It says so on their first page, and bluntly, a 1st grader would know that.
#3 I never stated I was going to run around my neighborhood shooting the gun — Although I’m glad you left feedback, I do not like being thought as some radical (or etc) because of your presumptions.
#4 It’s true that I “don’t even have a clue about how to use an air rifle”. However, it doesn’t mean I can’t learn does it?
#5 I was going to the NRA Headquarters about 20 minutes from my house to sign up for my course, thanks for reminding me!

Jason have you considdered buying the talon with c02 adapter and co2 paintball tank? Adding a scope to complete complete the Talon?

This would get you into the game so as to say, and buy HPA tank, scuba tank and refill clamp, one at the time as $$$ becomes available?

That’s the way I had to complete my condor setup. Bought the condor with Hi Flo tank, then bought co2 adaper and co2 tank. The condor is quit functional on co2 @ 95 degrees.

A year or so later I bought two 2 used 80 cuft scuba tanks $200 and a HPA fill clamp.

My scuba tanks are due their first hydrostatic recertification now. Required every 5 years.

Using 2 80 cuft scuba tanks (filled to 3200 psi) to cascade fill the Hi Flo tank will get about 23 refills versus 1 80 cuft scuba tank refills of about 5 or 6 @ 2800 psi HiFlo tank refills.

Buying the talon set up on co2 could save alot of $$$ being complete for the backyard/basement shooting range. The talons SS would be Home and Basement friendly. very quiet compared to the Talon.

BTW co2 is temperature sensitive meaning the HOTTER the more psi. Cold weather produces low fps.

Sam.

I never thought of buying the “c02 adapter and c02 paintball tank”. Isn’t the c02 tank only designed for c02? Or is that the reason why you buy an extra tank so it would later be compatible for the Scuba Tank’s HPA? I’m sorry but I have no idea what a Hi Flo tank is. I think that the “co2 adapter and co2 tank” are included with this Talon SS Set (1st Link)? I’m not going to use this Air Rifle every day so as to say, however, I’m sure I’ll be using it plenty of times every week (Prob. most on Weekends & Fridays)! Yeah, I heard about that SOME Scuba shops actually put your scuba tank into an ice bath so that it can be given the optimum amount (Full) of air! Thank you for the advice!

Actually I used the hand pump for 6 mos. because of the initial cost factor.
Like Lang said once your filled you are just topping off, and not too bad, plus your young, it’ll be good for ya.
And if and when you do get a suba tank make sure you have a verified place that will fill it for you.
Dive shop, paintball store, Fire Dept.
And be up front with place, although I say I use the air for paint ball, not a .25 cal, lead slinging killing machine 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

Good Luck, and welcome to the nut house

Yeah, I heard that some Scuba shops require a Dive Card. However, if you’re up front with them and are courteous and say its for a paintball/air rifle(?), they’ll mostly always fill it for you because they understand that we air gunners need PCP. Can’t they (Employees) tell that the air rifle is a killing machine 😀 ❓

There is someone under the sale section, also in VA., selling a ss, and pump for 600.00, that could get you started, if you are man enough to pump, that puppy up.

Jason,
Have you considered the Benjamin Discovery sold by Crosman? It is a nice gun and it runs at 2000 psi so it would be easier to pump up or you would get more fills from a 3000 psi tank. Check the Crosman website for more info. You can even spend a little bit more and buy it from Mac1 airguns and it will be tested and tuned before you get it. I believe the Mac1 tuned Discovery is about $275.00 and with pump is less than $400.00. I would still recommend the tank though if it is in your budget. My daughter and my grandfather both have Discovery rifles from Mac1 and they are great. They don’t have the Talon “cool factor” but they are accurate and hit hard.
KG

If you get a SCUBA at least get one that is rated at 3400 or so. They’re out there. You’ll get very few fills from one that is only filled to 3000… like 8 or so dependant on other variables. With a moderately powered TSS figure on .. something like 50-80 shots a fill.

That adapter is correct for a standard K-valve scuba tank and the Talon bottle will thread right into that adapter for filling.

You need to spend a little time researching before you jump in. You may change your mind about going PCP first thing. Everything you need to know is on this forum. Read through the quick reference section.

You’re not going to want to take the gun’s bottle to the scuba shop to have it filled. You’d likely have to do that every 10 minutes. You need your own scuba tank… perferrably one that is much higher than 3000 PSI rated. Most of us go with carbon fiber SCBA cylinders rated at 4500. A setup like that with fittings, and hoses will run you about $500 in itself. A hand pump can be had cheaper if you don’t plan on shooting much… get the Hill brand.

quote Bean:

Scuba… you’re going to want to buy a scuba tank and get that tank filled at the dive shop, then use the approipriate valve/fitting to fill the talon tank from the scuba tank.

Seriously – go read up on the tanks, a couple hundred $$ will get you a set up that will fill you gun’s tank a handful of times between refills. Closer to $650 will get you a 4500psi set up that wil fill your gun’s tank many many times BUT you must know that you can get it filled to 4500psi. Used equipment can save you money.

edit… ATP types faster than I do… 😛

I know that you guys are saying that 4500 psi is better but since my budget can’t afford that I was wondering if I could get a 3000PSI one (1st link). I also read (2nd Link) that most Dive Shops won’t be able to get above 3500PSI, however Fire Stations usually have compressors that can?
Also does anyone know about laws stopping you from shooting ANYWHERE inside the state except hunting ranges? Does everyone in this situation actually go to a hunting range to shoot always? So if I got a scuba tank, I would get this adapter (3rd link)? Thanks for the help guys 😀

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t see Fatman’s post above mine when I posted.
At the moment, I have “Talon SS w/Scuba Refill Clamp Assembly-no sights Powerful pre-charged pneumatic, caliber – 0.22″, Refill Clamp NO sights” for $470 w/o tax and shipping. If I add the 1/4 and 1/8 -> 1/4 adapter, the total comes out to $506.25. I’m not sure why I would buy two different adapters though.
$506.25 (Talon SS W/ Refill Clamp w/ 1/4 & 1/8 -> 1/4 Adapter)
$173.95 (Scope — Bushnell 5-15×40)
$ ??? (Scuba W/ 3000psi)
Total is way over $680.10 with tax, shipping, and scuba tank

You guys are right, my budget can’t fit buying the Talon SS =p. I never knew that PCP’s could cost so much money. Do you guys know any good guns such as the Gamo Whisper .22 cal with Air Venturi Ram Gas spring? I need something quiet but strong. I guess I’ll also get the gun tuned by CharlieDaTuna IF I go Gamo. I can’t say how much I want to thank you guys for helping me out with this product I thought I could buy. Shows how much research you have to do before you actually know how much an Airgun is going to cost in the end. Goodnight everyone, time for me to go to bed 😀

Jason — you will need

1. Talon SS — 509.00
2. AirForce 1/4″ male BSPP Adapter — 15.00
3. AirForce 1/8 to 1/4 BSPP Adapter — 22.00
4. Hill or FX hand pump — 290.00
5. Scope — 190.00
6. Rings — 15.00 to 30.00
7. Tri-Rail — 30.00 if needed
8. Pellets — depends on pellets

Grand total is 1071.00 just to get started.

Haha yes my parents know I am using the Internet. Also I had already known about PCP’s and that it was consisted of Co2, and High-Pressured air. I was from the beginning, going to stay around and do a bit more research before even buying the gun. I’m sorry, I don’t really check the psi of bike tires when pumping nor look at the dial much (I’ve forgotten how high it goes also). I usually just check if the tires are “hard” and have enough pressure for me to ride around on the bike better. I don’t know why my age remotely matters to you. I know for a fact that many people on here and everywhere else on the world started Airguns when they were about my age (or younger). Sorry for sounding like I’m mad at you (I’m not), I guess I’m cranky at night 😉

EDIT: By the way, thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions :]
PS: I like your profile pic. That is Brad Pitt is it not?

Your Bike tires are at about 50psi, your age doesn’t mean a darn thing to me (except for the quick joke) I would be saying the same things to some 4 times you age (like me). And yes – that is Pitt from Fight Club. Great movie but almost time to find something new… I’m fickle. If you have a thick skin, hang around, read, chime in, get made fun of, then go buy a Talon SS if it suits you.

BTW… the pump is also ALOT harder to operate than a bicycle pump… like using your body weight (if you are of average weight) to push the handle down 400 time to fill from 0, 100+/- times to refill after 50ish shots, depending where you have the PW set.
