Non-Airgun Projectiles
Was reading in the Condor forum and saw a discussion on this.
I’ve often wondered about this. What are some of the issues to consider?
I’m sure that rate of twist is an issue. But besides that, can a jacketed projectile be used effectively or are we just talking about cast bullets.
Take .22 for instance. Would you need a 1:12 twist or would 1:7 be better?
Would the projectile need some type of conical base like the Minie Ball to seal up like a pellet?
I would love to be able to cast lead bullets to use in a small caliber air rifle.
I’m sure there is a lot I haven’t considered. Feel free to contribute.

Ahh sabots. I truly believe those are the future of bullets. Bullets can only get going so fast before the speed combined with their spin completely fragments the bullet. But that can be overcome by a sabot. They can be pushed to much higher velocities without coming apart. When someone can figure out how to get them shooting as accurately as a spinning projectile, we will be able to achieve some insane velocities. 😯
But that has nothing to do with the topic. 😛
On topic, it has been talked about many times before, but to my knowledge has never been done with a lot of success. Some people want to do it with 17hmr type bullets for the ballistic tips and things you get, but that doesn’t work either. They aren’t going fast enough, so even if you can get it shooting, it will be essentially the same as a solid pellet.
In the end, there are pellets, then there are bullets. Bullets are made to utilize the much higher velocities of firearms. Pellets use the slow velocity. Don’t cross the streams. 😉
