Q:

Now here’s a head-f**k.

I’ve just realized that the hole through my lathe (through the chuck and spindle) is a pissant 1.25″ (approx). So I can’t get even a measly 1.5″ bar through it.

So…that’s what steadies are for, right? So how come these steadies are made with blunt pieces of metal THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO REST AGAINST AND STEADY A SOFT PIECE OF METAL REVOLVING AT HIGH SPEED?!

What kind of FUCKWIT came up with that idea? “I know, we’ll steady the revolving work against blunt pieces of metal so we can hear the workshop windows shatter with the screech and watch the surface get torn to shreds.”

I’ve tried it with 2″ bar. Not only is it next to impossible to get the bar concentrically held in the chuck’s jaws, the steady does all of the above.

Am I to believe that a lathe of the size of mine is limited to bar no bigger than 1.25″? Or that I’m supposed to wreck my work on a standard non-roller steady? Because finding a roller-steady to buy is proving to be an act of futility. Lots of places showing you how to convert a non-roller to a roller though, further indicating that retail items are unavailable as a rule.

I’m truly baffled.

The usual idiots, please spare me the comedic dross, it’s getting old. Walt from Hawaii or Sean, two chaps who seem able to advise without the condescending trash-talk, I’m all ears. Please put me straight on this one. I’m about to fear I’ve bought a lemon of a lathe.

Walt, thankyou once again for taking the time to paint a full picture. You’re right, I kind of screwed up on missing that one. Never even occured to me, being the novice I am. I’m pretty sure the headstock hole is the same diameter as the chuck hole, I’ve had a look and can’t see it being any bigger. The 4-jaw chuck that was supplied is the same as the 3-jaw that’s already fitted, 1.25″.

Following convention, I’ve never been much of one for that. That’s how things get improved usually, somebody gets an itch to re-invent the wheel. Couple of months ago I asked about steadies with rollers, unaware in my ignorance that it’d already been thought of (but assuming it must have been). This shizzle ain’t rocket-science, much as some of you would like to pretend it is. It’s a skill, that most people can learn given enough time and practice. And it’s still one that can be advanced by those who are prepared to think outside of the box. Advances made by others that you enjoy, all while you laugh at anyone now who chooses to question instead of blindly follow without demur.

I question because I want to know the whys and hows, not necessarily because I think I know a better way. But you can damn well believe that I most certainly do consider it asinine in the extreme that any steady is provided without rollers already fitted. I guess the makers are just following convention though, eh?

What yellow said: use a light touch on the 3 prongs. If they rub and cause heat everything will expand and get tight.

I inside thread the ends of my shrouds to accept the endcap.
I use the steady rest to do so. Its 6061 aluminum tube, 1.25 inch diameter. The scrape marks from the steady rest will sand/ polish out.

I got a 12 inch Craftsman industral lathe, and the through hole is only about .875 inch. I wish mine was 1.25 inches big.

Lang, sorry to say, but the headstock throughhole is one of the most important specs to look at when buying a lathe, and it’s one of the things I look at first when checking one out; along with bed length and swing.

As you’ve found, the through hole allows direct chucking of a tube or roundstock, but size is extremely limited. This is just the nature of the lathe. A reasonable alternative is to use a 4 jaw, which is usually larger than the 3 jaw scroll chuck and will usually give you a larger through hole, but of course this will still be limited by the headstock hole but if the piece you are working is short, you can squeeze by.

As you’ve also found, if headstock limited, the only thing to do is to use the steady. The short fingers you have are soft metal and are designed to be sacrificial, so they wear quickly and are supposed to keep marring of your work to a minimum. In practice, though, the marring is secondary to the change in work to bit distance as the fingers wear in. For the first few jobs you’ll have to adjust the fingers constantly as they wear in, which is very tedious. Really, the way to go if you must use a steady, is with rollers. Rather than convert a steady, I just looked for a good quality roller steady on ebay and bought it, then chopped off the base and reconfigured it to fit my ways. Since the fingers adjust up and down, they can compensate a bit for out-of-center manufacture, so as long as you are close, they’ll work just fine. I recommend a steady from a Leblonde or Monarch or STandard Modern, they come up regularly and are very high quality, in fact the best you can find out there in the used market. I bought one from a Regal and I think I paid just over a hundred bucks a few years back. The only thing you have to watch is that the swing of your lathe matches the swing of the steady you are buying within a little bit; and that the mounting feet on the bottom of the steady are the same type as your ways… note that certain machines like Hardinge and Clausing use different way types and may not be mountable onto other lathes. The most common way type is the flat on one side and the inverted V way on the other. I just cut the entire foot off, then cut down the center to separate the flat from the V, then adjusted the height by chucking a 1″ solid bar and have it also held by the steady; then actually tack welded both feet onto it while it was in place on the bed. While getting the placement exactly right is very difficult due to heat distortion when you weld it up, I got mine close enough that it works very well and final cost was pretty good… materials was less than $125 for me. I called the company and they quoted me $7500 for a new steady for my machine, which is more than I paid for the entire lathe; so I saved quite a bit. (my lathe did not come with any tooling so I had to scrounge or make up what I needed).

You can buy them that way, they cost more so thats why the simpler version is given with the lathe’s usually is my understanding.

I’ve used the solid type to hold aluminum tube and so long as the peice is chucked accuratly and the prongs are only lightly touching the work then I have not had a problem with marring the work.

Oil the prongs and use light cuts at low speeds…. no problems.
