Now here’s a head-f**k.
I’ve just realized that the hole through my lathe (through the chuck and spindle) is a pissant 1.25″ (approx). So I can’t get even a measly 1.5″ bar through it.
So…that’s what steadies are for, right? So how come these steadies are made with blunt pieces of metal THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO REST AGAINST AND STEADY A SOFT PIECE OF METAL REVOLVING AT HIGH SPEED?!
What kind of FUCKWIT came up with that idea? “I know, we’ll steady the revolving work against blunt pieces of metal so we can hear the workshop windows shatter with the screech and watch the surface get torn to shreds.”
I’ve tried it with 2″ bar. Not only is it next to impossible to get the bar concentrically held in the chuck’s jaws, the steady does all of the above.
Am I to believe that a lathe of the size of mine is limited to bar no bigger than 1.25″? Or that I’m supposed to wreck my work on a standard non-roller steady? Because finding a roller-steady to buy is proving to be an act of futility. Lots of places showing you how to convert a non-roller to a roller though, further indicating that retail items are unavailable as a rule.
I’m truly baffled.
The usual idiots, please spare me the comedic dross, it’s getting old. Walt from Hawaii or Sean, two chaps who seem able to advise without the condescending trash-talk, I’m all ears. Please put me straight on this one. I’m about to fear I’ve bought a lemon of a lathe.

I listen. But the common tactic around here seems to be to meter out the information in dribs and drabs. I question? Yeah, you bet I do when most of the answers provide more questions than answers. Sometimes it’s like trying to get blood from a stone. Answers that simply expect somebody to follow, without the why? I guess that’s how the wheel got the tyre, huh?
Walt on the other hand, this chap delivers the whole enchilada. He doesn’t posture, he doesn’t demean, he doesn’t grand-stand, he simply informs. Comprehensively. With erudition and dignity. He’s a teacher and he delivers his knowledge man to man.

Walt, thankyou once again for taking the time to paint a full picture. You’re right, I kind of screwed up on missing that one. Never even occured to me, being the novice I am. I’m pretty sure the headstock hole is the same diameter as the chuck hole, I’ve had a look and can’t see it being any bigger. The 4-jaw chuck that was supplied is the same as the 3-jaw that’s already fitted, 1.25″.
Ninja, thanks for the picture of the steady, now I know what to go for, a new steady that I can similarly modify.
Following convention, I’ve never been much of one for that. That’s how things get improved usually, somebody gets an itch to re-invent the wheel. Couple of months ago I asked about steadies with rollers, unaware in my ignorance that it’d already been thought of (but assuming it must have been). This shizzle ain’t rocket-science, much as some of you would like to pretend it is. It’s a skill, that most people can learn given enough time and practice. And it’s still one that can be advanced by those who are prepared to think outside of the box. Advances made by others that you enjoy, all while you laugh at anyone now who chooses to question instead of blindly follow without demur.
I question because I want to know the whys and hows, not necessarily because I think I know a better way. But you can damn well believe that I most certainly do consider it asinine in the extreme that any steady is provided without rollers already fitted. I guess the makers are just following convention though, eh?
