Now here’s a head-f**k.
I’ve just realized that the hole through my lathe (through the chuck and spindle) is a pissant 1.25″ (approx). So I can’t get even a measly 1.5″ bar through it.
So…that’s what steadies are for, right? So how come these steadies are made with blunt pieces of metal THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO REST AGAINST AND STEADY A SOFT PIECE OF METAL REVOLVING AT HIGH SPEED?!
What kind of FUCKWIT came up with that idea? “I know, we’ll steady the revolving work against blunt pieces of metal so we can hear the workshop windows shatter with the screech and watch the surface get torn to shreds.”
I’ve tried it with 2″ bar. Not only is it next to impossible to get the bar concentrically held in the chuck’s jaws, the steady does all of the above.
Am I to believe that a lathe of the size of mine is limited to bar no bigger than 1.25″? Or that I’m supposed to wreck my work on a standard non-roller steady? Because finding a roller-steady to buy is proving to be an act of futility. Lots of places showing you how to convert a non-roller to a roller though, further indicating that retail items are unavailable as a rule.
I’m truly baffled.
The usual idiots, please spare me the comedic dross, it’s getting old. Walt from Hawaii or Sean, two chaps who seem able to advise without the condescending trash-talk, I’m all ears. Please put me straight on this one. I’m about to fear I’ve bought a lemon of a lathe.

I havn’t got a beef with anyone, and as someone said earlier, i ignore what i don’t like and gleen as much info as i can whilst enjoying the cyber company of some very funny and intelligent guys.

I dont really care about the tiff that Langa had with Sean I just like quoting from that particular thread – If you’ll read my responses you’ll see no malice towards Langa. – up to a certain point I was siding with him, but then he went a little loopy.
I think the actual turning point for me was when Langa declared that making a regulator was easy….. Such arrogance from a guy one minute, and then the next he’s asking the most elemantary questions. For a moment I thought he knew what he was talking about… until for example he starts saying that theres no need to measure things, you can just eyeball. Quite a few folks tried to explain that you cant do that ANDexpect to make a precision device… and they get ridiculed and accused of being in a clique… The same happened about cutting threads, the lathe and so on.
He’s often boastful of how smart he is… so one might assume he could take a bit of heat and dish it back and we’d have a grand old time…. I guess I was wrong.

Seems to me that since Lang had the online ‘tiff’ with Sean, a few people have been riding Lang pretty good. And certainly not in the ‘friendly ribbing’ type way. I know Lang is very colourful in his prose, and very forthright in his opinions, but i see no evidence of him being the instigator in any of these online slagging matches bar the Sean episode, which is OLD news as far as Sean and Lang are concerned. Lang should of kept the issue with Sean to PMs imo. People wanted to defend Sean and in doing so attacked Lang. Lang defended himself and so offended other people.

OK, I’m back. I took my 6 year old daughter for a walk along the seashore to look for seashells, then we went for a quiet dinner at a great ramen noodle shop. Guys, the best parts of life just keep getting better. And when you think about all the aggravation you get from your job, or wife, or online folks you have never met and in all likelihood will never meet in your lifetimes, it just pales into insignificance. It ain’t worth it, gentlemen.
Lang, there is nothing simple about chucking up a piece. The 3 jaw scroll looks like the easiest, but it is never easy. Mark one jaw as your favorite. Some have marks already (1… 2… 3….) but by and large, most do not. The jaws themselves will most likely be hardened and CANNOT be marked themselves. I punched the steel of the chuck right next to the jaw, just a small line of 3 dots in a row to designate my #1 jaw. Then, when you chuck up a piece, you mark the piece with a felt pen, or even better, you scribe it with an awl so you know pretty much exactly where to chuck it up again if you have to remove it. A 3 JAW CHUCK DOES NOT grip things squarely. Life isn’t fair. Get used to it. No matter how many times you try, it is never chucked up super perfect. This is the reason most serious machinists use collets instead of chucks. The collet grips much, much, MUCH more evenly and squarely and will repeatably hold something more or less right at the limits of what you can measure in terms of repeatability. Chucks do not. I’m in the process of switching my chuck to a 6 jaw as a good compromise between a collet and a 3 jaw. The good 6 jaws sometimes have a feature called Adjust-true which I believe is a trademarked device from the Buck Chuck company, which actually allows you to move the alignment slightly. So, you chuck up a piece as evenly as you can, then you can move it slightly (without loosenign it… you adjust the chuck itself) this way or that to get it aligned perfectly.
I have found that sometimes, when tightening a chuck on a piece, it helps to slowly spin it very slightly as you tighten it. If you do it right, you can actually get good enough to ‘feel’ the high spots on the piece and avoid having the jaw land on those and throwing alignment off. Other than that, it’s blind luck.

I tend to be mechanically inclined myself but am really just learning the “art” of machining in the last month since I got my machine. I have gleaned and been freely given many good bits of advise/tips by fellow members here (even YN who you seem to get along sooooooooo well with brings good knowledge to the table if you’d slow down and listen) Walt seems to be a gentleman and scholar, I agree he would make a great teacher. His words have helped me on more than one occasion.
Then there are those here who seem that they either know it all or if they don’t can bullshit their way into making you beleive that they do. 🙄 🙄
