Q:

Opinions wanted; big bore, "big" budget

budget: 2500-3500 (gun, scope, hard case)

gun is for:
KILL ground hogs, wood chucks, whistle pigs… whatever you want to call them
plink with AUTHORITY! (Cartman voice optional)

needs:
MUST be “backyard” quiet, must be able to put a ground hog down HARD and FAST out to 100 yards, open to cast slugs but wont “roll-my-own”
shot count: cant lie, i just couldn’t do a 3-5 shots per fill 4500psi .50 Cal but i don’t need that for ground hogs. i think a 25 shot MINIMUM isn’t asking too much
i wont be going out in the field with this so there’s room for a LDC (oh wait I’m not @ The Yellow) for a shroud/moderator

I guess all the .30(3) talk has got me chomping @ the bit to go big bore. I was able to restrain myself (thank-god) when the Rogue came out but with Daystate & FX and quite a few custom options out there and some inheritance cash…

This isn’t my first (or last) gun I have a Greg D. tuned, Mike A. stock(ed) Mrod, a stock Prod, and THIS cluster-f 3rd hand TT .25 Condor
The Condor has the power but Ive never been able to get it accurate.
hope i hit on all the “FAQ” in these threads; apples to oranges what do you want the gun to do etc etc

I have the chance to “invest” waaay more than i would normally even dream of dumping into a pellet gun so i want it to be a good’un 😛

So throw out your thoughts / experience.

Just for example
Ive been kicking around the new .30(3)’s and love the Daystate power but the FX shot count, accuracy, noise and price weigh heavy in that fight but what if: Wolverine + extended air-tube & Shroud, shooting Surefire Slugs. (Tony, Jerry think’n .30(3) yet?)
What ever came of TT’s big bore hunter?
.257 ?

thanks for the input

thanks for the posts!

Tofazfou, I’m asking you to be biased, you have the experience i lack to make a good decision on this subject

That Condor is/was such a frustrating money-pit i would start off with a new (TT?) gun if i was to go that route. I just don’t trust one part of it anymore (except for Walt’s barrel).

as much as i hate to admit it, i always look(ed) with envy @ those with FX, Daystate or Edguns, sure this Mrod is nice and Ive sunk a lot into making it ALL it can be (still need a HDD, they didnt exist when i was making that gun) but it will never be an Airwolf.

Roach, your hittn’ on all the points regarding the new .303’s that are bouncing around in my brainpan. under powered but crazy accurate (Boss) could = “easy” 100 yard head-shots but then there is the availability of the pellets… but look @ that shot count: ahhhhhh!

what (who’s) slugs are the .257 crowd shoot’n? (if thats an individual making them, isnt that even worse then these .30 pellets: he stops = I’m screwed)
any good links to Doug’s gun/work?

EDIT:
Dyotat100 = Doug?

Isn’t .25 really not enough?
To make condor accurate, you need to add regulator. This won’t give you crazy pellet speed, but will increase accuracy. And use same type of pellets, I’d say that JSB has best accuracy, but u can also try H&N doubled to increase pellet weight. Big Bore guns are damn too much for critters imo.
You can also try to make heavy .25 pellets your own.
But if you really looking for big bore, I’d take a look at Daystate Wolverine .303.

Because of your needing and wanting a shroud and shot count, I would go with Doug on the .257.

If you could live with a 3 shooter and noise the Haley .257 would be your answer.

Doug has done some fine work for me on my Talon SSS, if I spent the money for a longer .257 barrel and bushing it would truely be a supergun for what you describe.

The only hope I can see for the over priced 303 Daystate is you can turn it down, it just does not shoot well for what you get unless you make a FX Boss out of it, then what so you have?

Yep a FX Boss, which is scary accurate, underpowered for the bore and much cheaper than the Wolverine.

And while were on that subject, the pellets are way too expensive and if this 30 caliber thing falls on it nose, who knows if they will contiue to be available for those who know about these guns, ie forum readers.

Best hope for the FX Boss is Tedd putting a 25 caliber barrel on it.

Roachcreek

Edit note: Ever notice how the answer to all of mankinds needs centers on the air gun the brown truck is bringing this week? Last week I was ging to cure birth defects, malaria, poverty and impotence in Diabetic 109 year old men with a BB machinegun. 😆

Ah forums.

As happy as you are with what Doug did for your Condor, I can’t see buying a FX or Daystate, get on the bus and get a 257 Condor, long barrel and a big tank, you’ll be KZ like Tofaz. 100 yard shots a cinch and nice size slugs to knock the critters down and quiet too.

Seeing as how cash has no limit…..LOL! you could upgrade that Condor via Doug (since he’s asking…lol)

Or, you could buy the Wolverine or FX.

Depends on what you want. All 3 choices would “EASILY” kill a chuck or hog with plenty left over.

I like the looks of the Daystate and also the shot count of the FX. The Wolv is like 95-100 fpe and the FX is about 75 FPE. Well, the wolv. could be lowered a bit in power to give it higher shot count and probably make it just a tad bit more accurate.

You could send your condor to Doug and have him convert it to 308 or 257 or even make it more consistent and accurate.

You could also buy a 357 Recluse and have Neil Clague slap you on a LDC.

Many choices and i dont wanna sound biast.

Don’t think they will be shooting slugs out of either one of those guns. Problem 1 is the magazine and problem 2 is they don’t make enough power. I don’t think they were designed to shoot heavy slugs and when turned up will end up things will start to fail.

My smallest .308 slugs are 115 gr and are .625″ long. I dont see any solid slugs weighing under 80 gr.

Whats wrong with your condor?

My .308 condor is pretty quiet. I get 10 shots over 200 fpe and it will shoot 300 yards with 120 gr slugs.

I also have built a couple .257 condors. Going to make a shroud for mine over the weekend. Should be nice and backyard friendly because it is about 2/3 as loud as the .308 and same design.
