Q:

Optics, sell 3 bullpups & drop the cash on great optics

I currently have (6) Edguns or Crickets and after shooting them all some and some of them a ton I have arrived at the fact that I always grab for the 3 smallest format guns out of the group and all 3 are .22 calibers. If I decide to sell I will be keeping the Leyla .22, Cricket .22 compact (Shanu, Dr. Steele’s) gun and The Edgun R3M short that I converted to an R3. The sell guns are the Edgun .30 Short, Cricket Long .25 and this last one is difficult but maybe even the Cricket .177 compact,( My fat fingers just don’t like those tiny pellets, but I love the gun !!)

My question is If I give up these 3 guns I am dedicating the money to Great scopes for the other 3 and once again what scopes are worthy of the sacrifice. I want side focus and preferably big wheel available, Light weight, 10 to 15 yard max. (min focal distance) great glass and reticle and cost won’t be a big concern since in my mind the money is already spent. What would you do…….. What optics would you consider buying…

I really use all three guns for the same purpose, close range pesting so no real distinction between the three, for sure I would want the same scope for the cricket and R3 and real confused as to what to put on the Leyla :confusedn:

I recently bought the SWFA mil to mil scope and could not be happier. Do we really need $2k scopes on PCPs?

I look forward to more results. The last comprehensive ones I saw were done in Germany a few years ago and the results were eye opening. A lot has changed and many optics/coatings have improved on even less expensive scopes which really are not included on this study. One thing missing was the environmental tests which exposed some of them to leaks, fog, etc. Non-the-less I am very interested.

On the results they have posted so far I am not surprised that Bushnell and the Leupold Mark 6 slid down the list. I wish they included the Sightron. Zeiss did very well on clarity as I would expect but it is the Diavari. NXS did ok on clarity. I think I will send mine in to have the lens redone. :suprisedn:

Tactical Scopes: Optical Performance Part 1

There is a pretty good set of tests/results of high end scopes at http://precisionrifleblog.com/2014/07/01/tactical-scopes-field-test-overview-rifle-scope-line-up/ if you have some time to work through it. One thing to keep in mind: there are a couple of 40/42mm objective scopes in the mix, and it’s not really fair to compare those to the 56mm scopes when it comes to resolution, brightness, etc. But there is still some good data there

March scopes are goodens, so are the nightforce. But March scopes make nightforce look like BSA’s.

I don’t agree. I have Nightforce NXS and ATACR scopes, as well as a March 3-24×50. I terms of glasses, I would rank them ATACR, then March, then NXS. I would say the ATACR and March are a step above the NXS, but the ATACR beats the March. That could be partly because the ATACR is a 56mm objective, but it is clearer and brighter than the March. But it also weighs a lot more and is much bulkier. I can’t really imagine putting the Nightforce scopes on an airgun, just because of the size and weight. I could see using the March on one if the price was no issue. Personally, I’ve mostly stuck with the nicer Bushnell scopes for my airguns; the really nice glass goes on powder burners that I’m shooting more than 150 yards.

Can’t argue with that as I haven’t owned or used that scope. I did recently shoot a panda action 6mm dasher march 8-80 tactical and was totally amazed. If I had the cash I wouldn’t pass one up.

The Hawkes, Falcons, and Optisans (MTC Vipers) are the best bang for the buck IMO being made in China but controlled by the Brits and designed with airguns in mind in that <= $500 US range. I like the Sightron for spending in the $1000 US range for very good Japanese optics. That 10-50 is real nice. When money is no object S&B or March and there are a few others in the $2-3k US range.

I have an NF NXS 8-32×56 on a PB and have never been too impressed. A waste of money IMO although it does hold up to the 50 BMG. The Sightron kicks it’s a$$ and costs less. I am really disappointed with my Bushnell Elite Tactical ERS 6-24 for the money but that is another story. My Bushnell 3200 broke and I found out Bushnell customer service was horrible a few years back. Maybe it has improved?

Brother Coda,,,

So,, what is your advice about choosing best scope for the PCP ,,, ??? the best scope for the price and one of the expensive as well??

however i am not a good one on scopes ,,,but if i were you,,, i would go to buy a very good scope one time and stay /enjoy for years with it,,, i would also like S&B , Stiner , March , Zeizz , Kahles or so,,, choose the best and the one that more suitable for air rifles,,

Which reticle does he have on the 3-24 Tactical (FML-1 or FMA-1 or 2)? The straight FML may not be right for long shots with an airgun. Illuminated? There is a price jump from the non-illuminated to the illuminated one. If you are not interested and if he is looking to trade I might consider it for fun. I guess he is looking for airguns to trade him? I have several higher end PCPs I just don’t use but I plan on selling one for the next airgun.

I have looked through a high-end S&B 10-50 and now the March 10-60. They are really very close IMO but both are in the same price range.

I have not been posting much but am still shooting and staying current on latest so I’m aware of the obsoleting of the cricket compacts and it would be hard to break up my .22 and .177 matched set in Skeleton stocks especially since i am OCD and like pairs of things but I will wait a bit first and see what the little compact is worth later. It is also silly to have or hold both for any real reason.

I got a trade offer on a March 1-10×24 that I think would be very nice on my Leyla for how I use it. He also has a 3-24×42 FFP March that is available for trade as well. Like I said having trouble giving up guns for scopes. I’m thinking on it.

I think that Sightron 10-50×60 is still the best scope I have seen near that $900-1300 mark IMO. in our semi-formal testing now about ten months ago it topped the list for clarity-resolution/brightness over some scopes that are considered pretty darn good. :biggrinn:

I would hold off a bit on the Cricket Compact .177. They are becoming collectors items and from what I was told – there are not that many of them out there – yet nearly all parts are interchangeable with the Standard. 😉

or put those fingers on a diet. :biggrinn:

I have not made any moves yet on selling guns and buying scopes but have a couple of options that have been posed my way. It is just hard to sell guns and buy scopes, more so than I had thought. I can shoot a gun and well, a scope not so much, just feels funny.

Wing, You are a good air gunner and supporter of this hobby, I will put you at the top of the 30 Std list if I decide to make a change. It came with a lot of round of 44.75 JSB’s when I bought it from the original owner so I have a lot in it as my only .30 cal. might make it hard to justify for someone as I’d need to sell ammo with it as a package.

I love the little 177 compact cricket but my size 13/14 fingers just don’t get along with the small pellets and the .22’s are just enough bigger to make a world of difference so it is still a maybe as well.

.25 Edgun long and .25 cricket are still the leading candidates to be offered for sale.

The Lelya, a 20+ fpe gun at best, might benefit from a better than average quality red dot scope.
Hoot:

Hoot, any suggestion for a good red dot scope?
I don’t have a Lelya, but I would like one for my talon SS!
