pellets…
OK, there are quite a few pellet types out there, and I know there are quite a few topics on this site for pellets…I do have a question though that I don’t think has been addressed, and if so…well, I’m sure I’ll hear about it 😉
Here are 3 different Diabolo Exact Jumbo pellets of slightly different weights. Which one(s) work better in the SS? Or does it really matter?
Thanks 🙂

Hitting hard being a relative term, Kodiaks out of my gun hit hard. I’m very happy with them.
No I don’t weigh them. I wash and lube them throwing away any dented or damaged pellets.
I’m only running the little stock SS barrel so everything else depends on that. I’ve tried heavier pellets (bisley magums – 21.4 grn) but they were all over the place and I tried a range of powers. Saying that they were quite tight In my barrel so that could be a contributing factor. The barracudas (Kodiaks to you) aren’t that expensive so I thought I’d give them a try. I wasn’t getting bad groups anyway but any decrease In group size can only be a good thing especially If they hit hard too 😉
Do you weigh and sort your pellets? What velocity are you going to be shooting these Kodiaks at? From at bench? What about wind? What distance?
Thanks Sam. I’ve just ordered a tin to try of our variation. They say there about 21 gr and look similar the kodiaks from google images. Hope they’ll tighten my groups up abit 😉
I use the standard .22 Cal. not the match. Mine are 21.1 Gr., Someday I will invest in a scale.
Sounds good to me WJS.
I think Waynejitsu covered the likeliest reason, consistency. Of course, it has to be a solid design for consistency to be of any value. My guess would be that the Kodiaks have a good aero design with low nose drag, high tail drag (like all diablo pellets) and the center of pressure and center of gravity are in good relation to each other helping to keep the pellet stable.
Which Kodiaks do you guys use? We don’t have any over here but I’d like to try some. Looking at Pyramid there’s 2 or 3 different types, weights etc In .22.
After chronying thousands of pellets, my “theory” on that is, as you said, the heavier weight AND weight consistancy.
For example, I checked the weight on some pellets yesterday and they ranged from xx.1 – xx.9, most were xx.5 and xx.7, but you can see the difference.
(No, these were fairly cheap pellets for plinking, but still, I would have expected better than that)
1- Now, if a pellet is lighter, a small difference in weight adds up to a larger percentage in weight difference, so POI would be effected more than if they were all the same weight (also makes a difference when checking out anything on a chrony too).
2- Using a heavier weight pellet, same scenario, the percentage of weight difference is less, not effecting POI as much.
3- Also, if you throw something light vs throwing something heavy, the POI will be greater with the lighter object and there is more that can affect the object thrown
When testing on a chrony, looking for accurate numbers, the pellets need to be the same weight (weigh each pellet). It will give a lot more accurate reading of what is actually going on.
Hope this makes sense:)

Jerry do you have any guesses/opinions as to why so many of us seem to get such good results from the Kodiaks? My guess is that most guns shoot the heavier pellets slow(er) and that helps.
I find my barrel shoots Field Target Trophy .22 Pellets (5.52mm) best. I have a BSA superten barrel in mine though.
Man, I wish that .25 bbl. would get here! Wad cutter—Hummmm! 😀 😈
You really have to try the pellets in your gun. The fact is that barrels vary and one gun will like a certain pellet and another seemingly identical gun will like a slightly different pellet.
I’ve got a Monsoon that does very well with the Jumbo Express pellets but doesn’t like the heavier JSBs near as much. Others have written about getting better results with the heavier pellets.
I’ve got 2 Barnes .32s that have “sister” barrels. These barrels were made with the same button and are the same length and are both lapped and polished and the same diameter. Yet, one likes a particular slug shot forwards and the other likes the same slug shot as a wad cutter.
Not that you would, but don’t accept someone else’s results and just buy that pellet. Their results are probably exactly accurate but only for their rifle. Yours may like a different pellet much better but you have to experiment to find out.
That said, I’ve yet to hear anyone say that the Kodiaks didn’t shoot well out of their Talon/Condor so that’s probably a safe bet…

I know alot of members on here rate them highly but I’d never heard of the barracuda or kodiak before coming on here. Still, I hope I get some good results from them. Pellets should be here In a few days and then I’ll just be waiting on the HPA air tank to arrive before I can rattle a few shots off.
