Anyway, I purchased a .25 18″ barrel for a good price from a gent here in North Florida. I came home from work last night to find the box waiting on my dining room table. Since I don’t have T.V. at my house (only netflix), and since I couldn’t watch my Giants play on Monday night football (probably for the better as the Refs would have had my blood pressure boiling {lots of bad calls}), I decided to listen to the game on AM radio (less stressful) while putting my (new to me) 18″ barrel in.
Things went very smooth in the beginning until I discovered I had a problem getting the breech to ride over the leade in and cock the gun. Now I am no “newb” when it comes to these “lego” rifles so the first thing I thought of was something was binding the spring, perhaps a screw, perhaps something got inside in the midst of my worry as to how the Giants D (or any defense for that matter) can contain the likes of RG3 and win a football game…man that kid has some talent, but I digress sorry. Sooooo, I take the barrel out to find nothing interfering with the spring and hammer so my next thought is perhaps a bent barrel (sorry Roger {the gent I bought it from} nothing personal, just trying to sort it out. I check the barrel and it is perfect. I then move on to the barrel bands (as no two are alike (are you reading this Air force Quality control manager???), reaching into my “box O’ many bands” I put two new ones on. I reassemble the rifle and STILL, the same problem 😡 . By this time the giants are down by 7 and I’m up way past my normal bed time of 10:30 so I am getting tired, frustrated, and angry. But since I have a date with a complete garage over hall in the morning (my day off), thereby reducing my “honey do” list from 103 things to 102, I must get this sorted out before hitting the sack. Now I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but I recall many years ago, a “red neck” mechanic here in Florida told me that when working on anything it is imperative to be smarter than what your working on (paraphrased of course). I can’t tell you how many time since I was outsmarted by inanimate objects and machinery, but still, I call upon his Solomonic words as I breath in deep, then exhale. I take a few moments and deduce that I need to have the barrel out of the frame so I can compare it to my other barrels and figure this thing out so I can get some must needed shut eye. By now the Giants already fell 17-16 opening the door further in the NFC east for a number of rivals to walk through, especially considering the soft remaining schedule of our rivals…but again, I digress (sorry, especially for those of you who don’t like football).
BINGO, the barrel leade in is fine. The culprit: (drum roll please) the breach! The breech I was using has been on my .25 condor for 2.5 years getting slammed by a 90 gram hammer so as can be expected, it was starting to break down. I reach into my “bag O’ breeches” and put on another and Eureka…problem solved.
Enter Problem number two: barrel shroud. I have a shroud from R&L that was on my .25 24″ barrel. I purchased a barrel band/shroud stud in the event that I ever wanted to use this shroud for a 12″ barrel but wouldn’t you know it, the band/shroud stud has an i.d. for a .22 barrel not a .25. So ooooooooo I reach into my “box O’ barrels” and put on a 12″ .22 barrel (acquired from Rob in NC) for the time being and there is good reason for it. A year ago I made a large .22 pellet purchase and it included five tins of EJ’s and now I have reason to try them out! Ultimately this will be an 18″ .25 but for now I am off to see if these “North Carolina” barrels can shoot, lol.

Bolt was made by a gent here called “subsonic”. The parts come from having owned 8 AF rifles over the years and hence their pseudonym: Lego Rifles 😀
At one point I had all the parts for an entire rifle but the frame so guess what I did? I bought a frame.
I have found that I am as “diseased” by these rifles as I was by the 22xx virus I had a short while back.

A few years ago I shot quite a bit of groups over the chrony. Almost all of them were vertically strung.
One looked almost exactly like the one you posted. All shots edge-to-edge, vertical line. All 5 shots were barely subsonic, and the chrony reported 1075fps for each shot.
Yea, I had to look twice each shot to be sure it was recording.
Velocities were always very consistent with those pellets, and the accuracy was always weird.
Maybe, somehow, they know what a pretty hole they punch in paper and they want to create their own hole punch 😀 Since my .25 shot the Crow mags so nicely, I want to try them in .22. I have to dig through my pellet overflow box to see if I have any.
Im not so sure a chrony will give you the reason.

Mike, I am stuck on Desert Tan, OD green, and black. Some of the best colors out there, IMO.
Rif was wondering the same thing. It is very odd indeed. I suppose it would be helpful to have a chrony on hand when the “phenomena” occurs 🙂
They almost fired in the same manner in that other group in my picture. The one to the right was most likely me so if I didn’t pull it it would have been a dam near identical, vertical climbing group. I probably should have fired from my bag instead of a bipod on bricks. Groups would have been a tad tighter for sure.

It would also look nice with OD green in the inserts…ODG, DT, and Black always look good together. I may eventually go that route or just paint the entire thing, frame and all, tiger stripe camo with the same colors above.

25 is my back yard range. I have to take a little road trip to move out further. I like to establish a “base line” pellet at this distance. If I can’t do better than 1/2″ @ 25 I don’t like to play at 50 and beyond.

I see predators doing that often. Ive got a lot of groups that string vertically, while other pellets do not. Never figured out why because they do not shoot like that from the S410, only out of the talon.
Having said that, they still manage to find the head of starlings at 30 yards, time after time.
Okay, so I lied…how many of you could honestly go sweat out five hours in the garage before testing a rig you just finished assembling? None of you, that’s what I figured 😀
As I figured, this North Carolina 😎 LW barrel was a shooter. I suppose it is due to Rob’s TLC, thanks Rob.
The first groups I shot was with the Monsters 25.4 gr on a 2800 psi (sorry, no chrony right now) and I honestly almost crapped myself as the first four shots went into the same hole at 25 yards then the fifth was a hair outside giving me a group of .328! Unfortunately that was the best of the groups. After they averaged 1/2 to 5/8″ (same 2800psi fill pressure) not too shabby.
I was surprised that the lighter 16.13 gr exacts did so well at both a 2800 psi SP and a 2000 psi EP 38 shots later. They surely stayed subsonic and I want to chrony them to know for sure soon. They did best at an average of 1/4″ to 3/8″ 5 shot groups over and over again.
The predators were not too bad either. They averaged 1/2″ to 5/8″. Check out that nearly perfect vertical climbing group with them. Every shot seemed to touch the top of the previous shot and if I had a chrony perhaps it would have showed each shot climbing in fps.
I took of the R&L shroud because it was clipping due to not having the proper OD springs…I kind of figured it would but I tried anyway. I replaced it with my tried and true frame extender LDC.
No, Rob, you can’t have this barrel back now…you should have taken it when I offered it, lol. Next time I will test 18gr JSB’s, Beemans, and the EJ’s.

60 Grit…. you need to check out the Bipod mount that Dyotat made for me… it is pretty slick and you can avoid putting any undo pressure on your frame.
