Pics of the 457 SS
Nice short little rifle 36 in. long- Thanks to ELDY, barrel and breech and top-hat, and Dyotat, for the valve and spring, and Anthony, for a 90.3 gram hammer, it’s a smooth shooter, think I’ll get 10 shots between 600 and 650fps, maybe more fps. with higher air pressure. The only issue I am having at this time is the safty, I have it forced open to cock for now.

You need to pull the safety and your hammer is worn.
The stock hammer setup does not like heavy hammer springs. The striker release wears out the delrin on the hammer.
That is why l made the barrel riding hammer. I ran into the same problems you are having.
Very much looking forward to your results JOE! Sucks you missed the hunt. 👿 I know exactly how you feel! Back when I had the Archery Shop, I was always being invited on hunts. Only problem was, they were always on the week ends. Exactly when I HAD to be in the Shop! GRRRRRR!!!!!

Ha, how did I know that’s what you would say! Can’t argue against the truth! I wish I had more time and more space. I was days away from a coyote hunt that was supposed to go down and the guy tells me he can only go on weekends…whereas I can only go on weeknights…then he tells me him and his buddy killed six of them on a saturday night. :butkick:
Gonna hit the range so I can at least get some good groups at 1 and 200 yards. My rifle is stacking them in the same hole at 40 yards so WHEN I do take the Pepsi challenge…I am confident it will perform as expected! Until then…. 😀
I was beginning to think Joe forgot he had it! 😆

Can’t wait to see that build when time and patience allows!
Maw,
Loose that safety. There’s nothing safe about it.
Mike,
That’s twice that you left ol 80 Grit’s name out of the .257 mention. There won’t be a third! :angrymob:
so start shooting the damned thing already and let me know how she’s do’n!
I have been wondering how that extra stif frame was doing for ya! :8:

Just noticed, my scope has been sliding forwards, 3/8th’s of a inch. 80 Grit, post up another pic. of that beast, it was exceptionally great.
LOL. Can’t forget about 80G Mike. Hell, I like HIS GUN…….
Doug,
Can’t wait to see that build when time and patience allows!

It’s going to be damned hard to beat the performance the AF stright shot valve design can put out. Dyotat has really stepped up it’s game.
I took a look at the post on Gate way, and the 1080 with a 85 grain slug was with a “34” inch barrel. 😯 Hell Yeah it should put a bullet down range. But that doesn’t pass up what Doug and Cedric are getting with much shorter bbl.s . Mine is only 21″ and only 100 fps less, and this is at 3200 psi.
Not so impressive after all. Think I will stick with the Talon/dor! 😉 :8:
Up Date, I now have the 4500 psi carbon fiber tank on it that Dman ordered for us and it is now getting 1060 fps. Still with the 21″ bbl. To add to that, this is with a larger dia. sizing die than I had before. So a LOT more friction. It droped the fps by 40 fps right off the bat when using the 3200 psi fill of the other tank. so we may very well be talking 1100 fps withe the old sizing die. 😉

Looks like the power is up some but the shot to shot is not good at all. That is a big drop and to get a curve it would be under 200 fpe or right around. Also on very high fill pressure.
What I was saying came from the guy that convinced Brent to make the .257. When he found out the numbers and shot count he wasn’t interested anymore.
I get 5 shots in the 1070-1080-1070 fps on 3300 psi. I have shot it on 3900 psi and it did right around 240 fpe with 74 gr. I don’t have it setup to shoot that high of pressure but I will shoot some 93 gr slugs and see if it gets me up in the 260 fpe area.
I’m doing this with 32″ barrel to your 34″
Not knocking the extreme guns I’m just not impressed with the tube type guns period. I wanted to sell my Haley 2 days after I got it. I have it shooting better but it is still a 3 shot gun. Biggest problem is not having a hammer spring preload (PW) like the AF guns. I’m have one to build but not the time right now.
I had the Haley shooting 890’s-900’s-890’s with 171 gr on a 4000 psi fill. Then I check it 2 weeks later and it’s off by 30+ fps. Hammer springs don’t like to be preloaded. With my condors I always 0 out the PW after shooting.
Looks nice..you guys are based in Michigan. Lot of snow up there from what I hear from the weather report. Your bigbores are high class and from the reviews I read are top quality. Nice too know there are still quality air guns made in the U.S.A. I still like my airforce airguns.
Thanks for sharing….
Thanks for the reply Eldy…I own a custom .25 that Tony Annuzzi Built for me and I love the rifle, Airforce has a great platform and it is nice to see custom builders like Dynotat building quality rifles…I do not post often and just wanted to set the record straight what our .257 can do, we are very proud of our guns as they are built one off not mass produced and every part is usa, not one part comes from overseas…kind regards, Allen.
Yes is makes more power but only because it fills to 4400 psi.
I will test my .308 on 4000 psi and see if it does 330+fpe. The Haley made 347 fpe on 4400 psi with 171 gr.
Extreme is the same thing. They fill to 4500 psi.
Did you know that they made a .257 extreme? It doesn’t even make 200 fpe on 4500 psi. I make 200 fpe on 3300 psi with my .257.
Takes a lot of figuring and testing to get decent fpe with these guns. I spent months to get my . 257 and .308 to where they are now. I don’t have the time right now to figure out what’s going to work with .457. I know the bigger the valve is the easier it is to get tank dump.
Here is some cronograph on our first .257 Brent made, gun is new and never shot before testing…This thread is from gateway to airguns… http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=53758.0

Hammer is worn and some debri left behind, going to change it back out to stock and see if the thing works at all. Changed it out and does not work, even stretched the spring under the sear, clicks, but does not lock up it’s trash, have to put my kit in another gun.
