Polishing barrel a good idea?
Ok, so I’m about 700 shots into my new relationship with the Vulcan. I cleaned the barrel after 400 shots and I was surprised at how dirty it was. I never got it completely clean, in fact, and gave up after six felt pellets and nearly 20 patches front and back (using patch worm). I then shot another tin or so and cleaned the barrel again, this time until I finally started getting clean patches. Again, it took a LONG time to start getting patches without obvious metal flakes or lead grime. I’m using ballistol and I’ve cleaned a lot of guns, and it seems to me that my barrel is getting exceptionally dirty. Like Hoot’s imagination dirty.
I wondered whether a small amount of polishing could make the cleaning process easier in the future, but I’m not interested in turning my rifle into a smooth bore or screwing it up in any other way.
So, is it as simple as running some valve grinding paste down the barrel on some felt swabs, or should I banish the thought of putting anything other than ballistol down the barrel?

Fux away ! The JB won’t harm your barrel. JB has the Bore Bright ( red container/red product) paste as well and it’s even finer compound.
Thanks for the replies, fellas. The valve grinding comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but it’s true that I don’t know jack about polishing a barrel. I believe I’ll take it easy and limit myself to a few passes with some J-B paste without going overboard. If I manage to fux my barrel I’ll come back and fess up.

+ 1 ! Stay away from grinding compounds since those will dull the Sharp edges of the rifling. Polishing pastes are mild and JB Paste milder still.
I use VFG Paste , followed by JB Paste followed byJB red Paste.
Geaux…..dont know if you were kidding, but DON’T ever use valve grinding compound on the inside of a barrel. Way too coarse and its designed to aggressively remove metal on two mating surfaces. I would use something like JB bore paste or Flitz Wax or milder yet is Flitz Polish. You might not need that much polishing . I have a 25 Cricket that just needed about a dozen passes with Flitz and now it takes two or three patches and they come out clean…Flitz cuts right through that nasty lead residue as well.

I thought it long time before. I had 12x optic and it is truly too little. If someone is shooting up to 30m in precision or 50m around in non precision style is 12x enough. Therefore i bought 6.5-20×42. One disadvantage is is too heavy.
The 12x is too little for my eyesight when shooting precision at longer distances than 40 meters.
It sits on my .22 LR Anschütz that i use for moving silhouettes / running Boar discipline.

Just dusted my trusty Volcano after a long break (well, i shot a couple of shots last weekend but that doesn´t count) and dressed it with a Gamo 4-16 x 50. That´s the only Chinese scope currently in my posession and it will never leave this House. It has superclear and sharp optics usually found on scopes 10 x its price. Got that bugger as a factory replacement for a broken one formerly on one of my Daughter`s Gun.
Now i´ll start shooting PCP´s again and this little scope will hang along on the Vulc. :4:
You will go blind if you polish it too often. 😯
