Q:

Possible scratch in barrel?

Hey guys,

I have been trying to figure out why my gun has been grouping poorly. I figured it was in the valve, because I was having the problem after I messed with it. I crushed the stem and I think the the screws are stripped. Even with that I was getting descent numbers, good enough to not affect accuracy, I think.

I have checked everything I can think of, screws, shroud, mounts and found nothing there that should be doing it. I than looked down the barrel and saw a faint line moving with the rifling, but not at the rate. How much could this be affecting the accuracy, short of buying a new barrel is their anyway to test this? Can they be honed or polished or would that make the bore to big?

At this rate I think my gun may be heading back to Florida for the winter, or sooner if Tony will take it again. If so, the valve will never be touched by me again.

Thanks

Last time I used the gun I cleaned everything and dry lubed it. Should be good to go there. thanks

Pab,
the numbers were good after I messed with the valve. Going to try again today if the rain stops or tomorrow, maybe I’ll just shoot from inside the house. Also just mounted a different optic to see if it was the scope. Pab, do hammers get scratched up from whatever holds it back whens its cocked? Mine is real scuffed up, you can feel the scratches ,but they are not gouges.

thanks

Hammer would only get marked up if the hammer sear if rough. If it feels rough to the touch then I’d be looking to smooth that out. Also do the usual cleaning of frame and dry lube hammer etc. Though if you’ve just changed the glass, best to leave all else alone until you can eliminate that possibillity

Would of thought the only way for the valve to mess with poi would be if its now putting out erratic fps. But you say the strings are still good?
If you haven’t already, get some numbers..

Did it used to group well, and has now gone to shit? Or has it always grouped badly??

Pab,
it used to be great, it was a Tony tuned gun. It went to shit after I messed with the valve. I had done several strings and the numbers were good except for one or two in a 15-20 shot string. I am going to try to get some numbers to see if there still good and try to find a different scope to use today to try to eliminate some things.

DONT FUCK WITH THE VALVE AFTER TONY HAS SET THEM 😆
you should know this
next call tony as it his tuned gun
\he can prolly help you out

Also wondering if hammers get chewed up as they are used?

Its raining and guess it suppose to all day, makes sense cause its the weekend and I have free time. Suppose to let off tomorrow so hopefully nothing comes up.

Thanks

Here are some pics Jim and yes it gets snug at about the last inch or so. I have never tested without a shroud, just because I don’t know how many shots I can get off before the cops are here. I cant see any marks on the the end cap or on any of the baffles I can see. I have even tried spinning it before to see if it made a difference. Groups are bad, a couple of inches at 20yds. Ill try to do some shooting today if it is not raining.
thanks for the help

What are you calling bad groups? yardage and size please (oh, and you will be slashed seven times with a wet noodle if you show us 3 shot groups LOL)

Are you 10000000000000000% sure you are not clipping the shroud? Shoot without it for grins at least one group.

As Eddie said, those look good, although not entirely as smooth as one would like the cuts to be. A little JB will help that, but don’t go overboard as it’s not that bad.

How did the barrel feel as you were slugging…was there a constriction at the end (choke) and no noticeable loose/tight spots on the way?

Have you inspected the crown? Q-tipped it to see if there are any burrs? You have a nice camera there so a few shots of the crown would be nice too.

Please keep us abreast of the action.

Jim

AM if those rifling groves are all the way around like the pictures show and no extra marks or lines anyplace I would say your barrel is not the problem you can still do the jb bore polish just follow the directions if you have done one before your good to go. And I can uderstand what you are saying about the scope if you have a spare scope someplace it’s very much worth a try to put on a different one if this pans out send the scope back 95% of the time they will just send you off a new one expensive scopes do break as do the non expensive ones how old is the scope?
